Iris Carranza, a young Honduran teacher, had a dream. A dream that she would provide a private bilingual school in her north coast town of La Union. On September 1, 2012, Iris’ government approved bilingual school which opened its doors with 12 preschool and kindergarten students. Each subsequent year, another grade will be added up through grade six, after which the student will enter high school. Read on to see how you can assist Iris and her young students, by supporting this life changing goal.
The public school system in Honduras is of very poor quality largely due to the country’s distressed economic situation. Schools lack supplies and qualified teachers. Frequent disruptive strikes occur due to teaching staff salaries being paid late or not at all
Parents motivated to send their children to a good school know that providing students with a well rounded, uninterrupted education will open future doors of opportunity and ensure prospects of a decent job. But these parents need your help. Many are employed in nearby pineapple fields where they earn Honduran minimum wage of slightly less than $300 USD per month. Although substantially more affordable than bilingual schools in the near by city of La Ceiba where fees run to over $200 per month, the AFBS monthly tuition charge of $60 USD per month is beyond the reach of most families.
Our intention is, with the help of recurring monthly sponsorships, to create and maintain a scholarship pool which can assist children who otherwise would not have access to this higher quality education.

As a volunteer you will be working with Children ages 4-9 in a classroom environment, assisting in their language studies, and other curriculum. There are also many other projects around the school in need of attention and progression. Helping construct the new classrooms, building a garden for educational purposes, general upkeep of the property, to start with. Eventually Iris would like to have a library and a computer lab to aid in the children's education. There are also opportunities to help out in the local public school and kindergarten, as well as instructing local adults and teens in basic english.
There are many families in La Union who would like to have volunteers living with them. In these homestays you can expect comfort, opportunity for cultural exchange, mutual language assistance, and a brilliant upbeat, Honduran atmosphere.
You can expect nothing short of an amazing experience here in La Union. It is a wonderful community filled with lively and friendly people, even if you come with little to no Spanish you can expect to quickly pick it up as you are surrounded by a perfect learning environment.
La Union is placed between the Pico Bonito Mountains, and the Caribbean, so there are many options for weekend excursions, including beautiful hikes up to cascading waterfalls, lounging by the sea, exploring the exciting eccentric city of La Ceiba, and many more.
A beautiful setting, and an important cause, you will teach and learn, grow and settle, a lot is available to those who wish to help.
