    Description

We run a local project created by the people of Barra de Pacuare, a small Caribbean coastal village in Costa Rica. It started with one idea: to bring the community closer together while protecting the nature that surrounds us.

We focus on sea turtle conservation, reforestation, and supporting local families through meaningful, nature-based work. Since there are no cars, shops, or steady jobs on the island, this project is a way to grow something sustainable together.

Being part of this project is also about getting to know the local culture and daily life on the island. You won’t just work — you’ll experience what it’s like to live here. You’ll be invited to join local boat tours that show you around the area, guided by people who actually live here.
During your stay with us you will meet fellow travellers and make lasting friendships with international people.
On the weekends, there’s a small local bar where everyone can hang out, enjoy some music with a nice cold juice or well deserved beer and learn traditional dances like bachata and salsa from locals who are happy to teach you.
Locals can also take you fishing and teach you how to cook traditional tico meals using local produce like breadfruit, coconut, fresh shrimp, etc.
Most importantly, you’ll be part of the community, not just visiting it.

It’s a great way to connect, share stories, and make memories while giving something back.

Workawayers are invited to be part of daily life here. We are looking for passionate travellers who want to help release baby sea turtles at sunrise, plant native trees, or learn how to make coconut oil or handmade crafts with local families, lend a hand with simple, meaningful tasks like collecting and peeling coconuts, building with natural materials like bamboo, gardening and helping with beach cleanups. Every task helps protect this place and support the people who live here while learning new skills and sharing beautiful moments together.

    Hébergement

We live in the jungle in between the river and sea.

We have multiple separate wooden cabins available for helpers. Some of them feature a double bed, a few of them feature a bunk bed and we are currently working on a larger cabin that’ll be able to host up to 6 people.

The kitchen is an outdoor kitchen and our diner is also outside - both under a locally built palm-leaf roofing. We also have an area with a couple of hammock by the beach that is a great hangout spot in the afternoons.

We offer three meals a day. We prepare a mixture of local and internationals meals to give a chance to our volunteers to get to know as much about cuisine as possible.

For breakfast we normally prepare e.g. sandwiches, pancakes with fresh fruit, or the local options, gallo pinto with eggs/cheese/sausage and empanadas. For lunch we like to go a bit light and have for example a hearty salad and fresh fruits. In the evening, we like preparing dinner usually involving rice, beans, some kind of meat or fresh fish from the sea or river, steamed veggies or salad on the side.

We are happy to cater for different dietary needs, please let us know if you are vegetarian, vegan, lactose/gluten intolerant, etc. In case you love cooking we would be happy to have you lend a hand in the kitchen or even share your favourite recipes with us!

We always have some cookies and fresh local fruits if you feel snackish during the day, while we also have tea and local coffee available all day long!

On your days off we offer excursions to Tortugero, you can take a kayak and explore the river and the other island or go for a 2-3 day trip to Puerto Viejo where you can learn how to make chocolate, visit gorgeous waterfalls, visit the local wildlife sanctuary or enjoy the lively nightlife in beach bars and dance the night away in the sand.
