    Description

Come spend the spring/summer at a forming intentional community in the beautiful mountains and rivers of Gitxsan Territory in northern BC! We strive for earth based, cooperative living in the hopes to create space for individual and collective transformation. We are an income-sharing community and aim to work by consensus of all our members.

We value highly cooperative environments based on open communication and equality. Our goal is to be an example of earth-based living in order to assist the much-needed transformation of ourselves and the greater society.

We strive to live as a family and interdependently empower each other to redefine the very nature of what's possible.

We are off-grid, we catch rainwater and haul drinking water from a local spring, we use outdoor compost toilets and a sauna and pond to bathe, and we have internet access.

We are a small community attempting to live cooperatively and simply. We are influenced by the climate in which we live and Gitxsan culture which is still very much alive in this territory. We practice open and honest communication and ways of speaking our deepest truths to each other, including heart-to-heart circles and full moon sharing circles. We enjoy ritual and ceremony to honour the sacred masculine and feminine. We honour the incredible land that we live on, both spiritually and through our lifestyle. It is important to us to protect the water, animals, air, earth that sustain us. This is an astonishingly beautiful part of the world, with snow-capped mountains and powerful rivers, and we are active in supporting local efforts to put a stop to industry violating this land.
We would love for volunteers to share any practices and ceremonies that you have around these topics!

Our focus this year is on finishing our hybrid two story Earthship project. This will be our community's home base!
We are working on finishing the interior and exterior of the building. We also have 2 one-year-old babies to love and care for, if you are interested in child care shifts. We also take turns cooking daily shared meals. We expect volunteers to cook/assist in cooking about 2 meals per week and help keep the communal kitchen clean, any more is always helpful and appreciated!

We have a cozy cabin with 3-4 bdrms available for volunteers. You are welcome to bring your own sleeping accommodation. As mentioned, we live off-grid, so you will be using composting toilets. We do not have running water on the build-site yet, so we use our sauna and ponds for bathing.

We offer food, trying to focus on what is grown or foraged but we are also still shopping for supplies, an outdoor kitchen, and the opportunity to learn skills and experience a more earth-based living environment.

There are beautiful walking trails on and around the property; through forests, to rivers and waterfalls and canyon lookouts. The towns of Old and New Hazelton are not far from the property, accessible by walking or biking. On weekends there is a local farmers market in New town. There are music festivals in the area each summer, that most of the locals and visitors come out to! We like to arrange knowledge/activity shares for whoever is interested, last summer topics included meditation, acroyoga, massage, compost toilets and more. We have a library of books on homesteading, eco-building, permaculture, community living, mother earth, etc. that volunteers are welcome to dig into while staying here. There is plenty of space for people to have solitude or hang out together!

It is a little complicated to travel up here, but, hey! that makes it all the more exciting once you're here. There is a Via Rail train station, unfortunately the Greyhound bus no longer operates in BC. For the adventurous, there are charter buses that run from Vancouver to Prince George and public transit buses that run from Prince George to Hazelton, but these buses do not operate everyday, so this journey would take a few days. You can fly into Smithers or Terrace airports and take a bus to Hazelton from there as well. If you let us know your travel dates we will keep our ears open for rides coming from wherever you're travelling from. Let us know which option interests you and we can send more details!
