🚨 AUGUST 2026 FULLY BOOKED — NOW OPEN FOR AUTUMN & WINTER 🚨

Our peak summer roster is officially 100% complete and full! We are no longer accepting applicants for August.

We are now actively recruiting serious, hard-working volunteers for our next critical openings:

    🍂 Autumn Gap: 16 September – 06 October (Need 2–3 volunteers)

    ❄️ Winter Block: 12 November – 31 December (Need 2–3 volunteers)

    Please Read Before Applying:

Because our shared village house operates under a strict maximum capacity of 3 single beds, slots fill up very quickly and we require absolute scheduling certainty.

We enforce a strict, non-negotiable minimum commitment of 3 full weeks on-site (excluding travel days).

(⚠️ PLEASE NOTE: Travel days are NOT included in these 3 weeks). If you apply, we will respond rapidly and ask that you do the same so we can finalise the schedule.

Are you a resourceful problem-solver with a passion for animals? We are looking for skilled DIY and animal-loving volunteers to join us throughout 2026 and help take our dog shelter to the next level! We need adaptable, hands-on people who thrive in dynamic environments, think outside the box, and aren't afraid of a hard work challenge. If that sounds like you, we would love to have you on board!

🐾 Under the beautiful stars lies a safe place for stray dogs and cats.

We are a small, non-profit animal shelter located in Trifilia (Western Peloponnese), operating as a Dutch-based foundation. Our core mission is to decrease the local stray population, rescue street animals in urgent need, and provide them with a safe, loving environment.

Unfortunately, street life is incredibly dangerous here. Animals are frequently dumped when they are no longer wanted (such as when they are sick, pregnant, or puppies) or face poisoning on the streets. Because this systemic problem is not sufficiently dealt with by authorities, local shelters like ours step in to give these animals a fighting chance.

    What we do daily:

Rescue & Rehabilitation: We bring in vulnerable animals, provide veterinary treatment, and care for them.

Adoption: When animals are not fit to be safely returned to their original areas, they stay with us while we actively find them loving, permanent homes abroad.

TNR Programs: We run regular Trap-Neuter-Return initiatives to ethically keep stray populations in check.

    Crucial Stay Requirements:

⚠️ 3-Week Commitment: Our absolute minimum stay is 3 full weeks of actual volunteering (excluding your travel days to and from Greece).

Why this rule matters: Your first 3 days are entirely dedicated to vital safety and task training. Your final days will involve handing over chores to the next incoming volunteer. If you count travel days within your 3 weeks, it leaves too little time to safely help the animals.

Long-Term Stays: We highly prefer volunteers who can commit to 2 months or longer!

    Good to know:

📶 We have a reliable Wi-Fi connection at the volunteer house.

🚐 Van Lifers Welcome: If you travel in your own campervan or motorhome and do not need to use our shared volunteer housing, you are always welcome to apply—even if our calendar schedule shows we are completely full!

You will learn how to tend to the dogs and cats from A to Z; From grooming to administering vaccinations and other medication. You will learn to 'speak' the dog language, how to approach and catch a dog or cat in a proper way.

You will learn what is needed to get dogs ready for adoption.

You will learn much of the Greek culture, food, language and others, since it is a authentic Greek area, with a rich history and lots of archeological sites in the area to visit.

We are looking for steadfast, physically fit, and proactive individuals who can hold their own. Our work is highly repetitive, physically demanding, and requires a genuine "hands-on" attitude. You should be comfortable working outdoors under various weather conditions, such as the intense summer heat or autumn and winter rains.

Prior experience with dogs—especially street or stray dogs—and basic all-around DIY skills are highly preferred. Finally, you must be comfortable maintaining daily digital contact with our core team based in the Netherlands.

    Your daily responsibilities will include:

Animal Care & Welfare: Feeding, watering, grooming, and checking the general health of the animals. You will also assist with vital medical tasks, such as administering prescribed medications or vaccinations.

Sanitation & Kennel Cleaning: Daily scraping and cleaning of the kennels to remove feces. You will also be expected to keep the communal living areas of the property (kitchen, fridge, bathroom, and storage spaces) clean and organised.

Socialisation & Training: Walking dogs on a leash, practicing basic commands, and observing their characters to help prepare them for adoption.

DIY, Repairs & Carpentry: Conducting daily security checks on kennels to look for structural flaws or holes. Tasks include building doghouses, repairing damaged structures, securing fencing, and assembling store-bought sheds.

Media Support & Mapping: Taking daily high-quality photos and videos of the animals, and keeping an updated logbook. This task is crucial; our Dutch foundation relies entirely on your media updates to run online fundraising campaigns and promote animals for international adoption.

Transport & Logistics: Accompanying dogs and cats to the local vet clinic, assisting on animal rescue searches, or escorting adopted pets to the airport for their flights.

Tool Management: Keeping all tools and property equipment safe, neat, and locked away in their designated spots so they are accessible and out of reach from playful dogs.

    Hébergement

We provide a simple, basic apartment located in a traditional village near the shelter. The main shelter caretaker lives separately on-site at the facility in a caravan, meaning you will have your own independent space away from the shelter after hours.

    The Space:

Setup: The apartment features 3 comfortable single beds, ensuring everyone has their own dedicated sleeping space.

Amenities: Equipped with a private shower room, a washing machine, and reliable Wi-Fi.

Living Environment: We can house a maximum of 3 volunteers at a time. Because you will share the entire space with up to two other teammates, privacy is limited. This setup is a fantastic opportunity to bond with fellow animal lovers, but it requires a cooperative, communal mindset! If you require strict personal space, this shared living arrangement may be a challenge for you.

Meals & Food:On your scheduled working days, we provide a hearty meal at the shelter cooked by our caretaker.

Alternatively, we will provide a financial food compensation allowance so you can buy ingredients and cook your own meals at the apartment.

    Autres infos...

On-Site Vehicle: We have a vehicle at the shelter, but please note it is in poor condition and strictly reserved for operational use, such as vet runs and animal transport. It is not available for personal sightseeing trips.

Getting Around: On your days off, you can easily explore the region. A bus stop is just a 10-minute walk from the shelter, offering direct connections to Kyparissia, Kalamata, and Athens. For local travel, you can use the bicycle provided at the house, call a local taxi, or rent a moped or car nearby.

The Village: The apartment is situated in a charming local village just a 10-minute walk from the shelter. It features various traditional tavernas and fast-food spots (like local pita gyros) right on your doorstep.

Local Markets: You can experience authentic Greek life at the fresh food market in the village near the shelter every Friday, or explore the much larger market held on Sundays right in the village where the apartment is located.

Days Off & Sightseeing: This is an authentic Greek region rich in history and untouched nature. During your downtime, you can hike through beautiful landscapes, relax on local beaches, visit traditional villages, or explore the many ancient archaeological sites in the vicinity.

The camper can be parked outside the property for a day or 5, but we are pretty much off grid. We also have someone where you can park at about half an hour drive from the shelter. You do need to chip in for the use of electricity and water there if you use it. It is also possible/allowed to park your camper in Kalo Nero, right at the beach!

We can potentially accept volunteers traveling with pets, but under very strict conditions due to our housing setup and shelter safety: 🚐 Campervans: Only: We can only accept your pets if you travel in your own independent campervan or motorhome. Your animals must remain with your vehicle and are not permitted to enter the shelter grounds at any time. 🚫 No Pets in the Apartment: We rent our volunteer apartment from a local landlord who does not allow animals. Therefore, if you are staying in our shared Workaway house, no outside pets are allowed under any circumstances.
