Description
We have a small farm on the coast of the department of Arequipa (600 km south of the city of Lima, 400 km north of the city of Arequipa), at a place called Las Lomas Atiquipa, at the foot of the beautiful and wild beach Jihuay. From the ecological point of view, Las Lomas de Atiquipa is a unique place, an oasis in the middle of the Peruvian coastal desert. From a historical standpoint, the site is a pre-hispanic settlement at the foot of the sea, and still retains many archaeological remains.
We’re rebuilding a beautiful nature-based project by the stunning Jihuay beach and are looking for motivated volunteers with hands-on skills in construction, gardening, or maintenance. We especially value people who take the initiative to organize and guide the work, as well as those who enjoy working as part of a team to help bring the farm back to life. Tasks include repairing animal enclosures and the vegetable garden, and maintaining bungalows, irrigation systems, plantations, and the rest of the property. If you’re passionate about nature and teamwork, this is a wonderful opportunity to help restore a truly special place!.

Volunteers can have cultural exchange with the responsible of the farm and with the locals of the neighboring towns in the area. As well, the volunteers may participate in the weekly shopping visit to the city of Chala.

Aide
We have been in Jihuay since 1998 because we love living in close contact with nature, and we fell in love with this wonderful place from the very first moment we saw it.
We have small plantations of olives, taras, and other trees, and we need to improve and repair our orchard and gardens. We also raise ducks, chickens, and guinea pigs. As the land here is arid, everything grows thanks to the irrigation system fed by water from a nearby spring.
Regarding facilities, the farm has basic comforts. We are not connected to the electrical grid (we rely on solar panels), and internet access is through Starlink. To get mobile reception, you need to walk uphill for about 15 minutes. Water from the spring is a precious and limited resource, so we use it carefully and responsibly.
We are looking for volunteers with strong practical skills in construction, repairs, farming, gardening and general maintenance skills. We especially value people who can take initiative and help organize tasks, as well as those who enjoy working as part of a team to make things happen.

Currently we have 1 rustic house, with the basic facilities required. Typically volunteers are accommodated in this house. Meals provided.

The place is beautiful and there are many places to visit, archaeological sites, beaches, hills, climbing sites, fishing spots, etc. A milestone for all volunteers, is to climb to the summit of Cahuamarca, the highest point of Atiquipa, where one of the most important archaeological site in the area is.

I spent three weeks at Jihuay and I must say that the place is an absolute paradise! During my time I got to see so many pre-Incan ruins (even a skull in one of the house since the place has not had a thorough archeological sweep), penguins, and sea lions! Thank you Jamie and Alvaro for making our first workaway experience amazing! We had the best time harvesting and eating camote, cutting grass by hand and working in the green house. Having all afternoon off gave us the opportunity to either lay in a hammock for hours or go on hikes looking for penguins and take a dip in the ocean.

We had an absolutely wonderful time here. The work was good and the host was very fun to hang out with and went out of his way to make everyone feel welcome. The location is beautiful and there was plenty of time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. We definitely recommend this place to other workawayers.

Hola, Hemos muy contentos de recibir a Lila, ha trabajado en el huerto, con los animales, arreglando la casa y mostrando muy buena actitud hacia el proyecto y los compañeros. Es una chica muy alegre que todos apreciaban. Estuvo 2 semanas con nosotros y siguió viaje hacia el sur, la vamos a extrañar. Gracias Lila!

Hola Vincent, Geoffrey y Erics van a completar 2 meses con nosotros, son muy cooperadores y simpáticos, y tienen muchas ganas de aprender, además nos alegran con su guitarra.
