Description
We are developing a long-term personal project on the remote coast of southern Peru, at the edge of the Pacific Ocean in a unique desert ecosystem.
This is not a typical farmstay or backpacker experience. The project focuses on building a functional and sustainable landscape in an extremely dry environment, working with limited water, solar energy, and simple infrastructure.
The main areas we are working on are:
irrigation systems (gravity-fed, water efficiency)
landscape restoration in arid coastal conditions
planting adapted species
small-scale construction and infrastructure
off-grid living systems (solar energy, water management)
The place is isolated, quiet, and physically demanding at times. It requires autonomy, practical thinking, and the ability to work without constant supervision.
We are looking for people who can contribute real skills, not just help casually.

This is a small-scale personal project, so the experience is more about working closely and sharing ideas than organized cultural activities.
You will experience a very different way of living, with a strong focus on nature, isolation, and self-sufficiency.

We are only interested in volunteers with practical, hands-on experience in at least one of the following areas:
irrigation systems / water management
construction / carpentry / basic engineering
landscaping / dryland agriculture
solar energy systems
maintenance and problem-solving in remote environments
You should be able to work independently, take initiative, and help organize tasks.
This is not a place to learn from zero. We expect people who already have some experience and can contribute from the beginning.
Current tasks may include:
improving irrigation distribution systems
organizing planting areas
repairing infrastructure
optimizing water use
basic DIY projects

Accommodation is simple and rustic but comfortable enough for daily living. Meals are provided.
We are off-grid (solar energy) and water is limited, so responsible use is essential.

I spent three weeks at Jihuay and I must say that the place is an absolute paradise! During my time I got to see so many pre-Incan ruins (even a skull in one of the house since the place has not had a thorough archeological sweep), penguins, and sea lions! Beti is a wonderful cook and is more than happy to teach her ways.

Fue una experiencia muy agradable en este lugar mágico. Descubrimos el mondo de las aceitunas, y ayudamos mucho en la construcción de la cabaña del guardia con Gonzalo. Thank you Jamie and Alvaro for making our first workaway experience amazing! We had the best time harvesting and eating camote, cutting grass by hand and working in the green house. Having all afternoon off gave us the opportunity to either lay in a hammock for hours or go on hikes looking for penguins and take a dip in the ocean.

We had an absolutely wonderful time here. The work was good and the host was very fun to hang out with and went out of his way to make everyone feel welcome. The location is beautiful and there was plenty of time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. We definitely recommend this place to other workawayers.

Hola, Hemos muy contentos de recibir a Lila, ha trabajado en el huerto, con los animales, arreglando la casa y mostrando muy buena actitud hacia el proyecto y los compañeros. Es una chica muy alegre que todos apreciaban. Estuvo 2 semanas con nosotros y siguió viaje hacia el sur, la vamos a extrañar. Gracias Lila!

Hola Vincent, Geoffrey y Erics van a completar 2 meses con nosotros, son muy cooperadores y simpáticos, y tienen muchas ganas de aprender, además nos alegran con su guitarra. Cuando hemos tenido que salir los hemos dejado temporalmente a cargo del fundo y han mostrado responsabilidad. Gracias por ayudarnos muchachos, regresen cuando quieran.
