Description
We are in need of a farmsitter!
The farm is a fledgling tropical permaculture farm on 10 acres of undeveloped land on an island in the Caribbean Sea. The farm is in Saint Croix, largest island of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The was licensed as a farm in 2023. The land consists of several mature fruit bearing trees and contains at least 30 varieties of existing food bearing plants such as mango, papaya, avocado and coconuts. At present, Workawayers have assisted with various tasks, from building main off-grid farmhouse, to earthworks to pet & house sitting
The World Central Kitchen states, "Like many islands in the Caribbean, the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) face a high degree of food insecurity because they are dependent on imports from Puerto Rico and the continental United States for more than 95% of their food supply." The farm is one of several small scale organic farms working to improve food security and sustainable living in the Virgin Islands.

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
Saint Croix is a United States territory and can feel familiar to U.S. Citizens in terms of language, currency, and some recognizable chain stores. However, Saint Croix has a culturally diverse history and an opportunity to experience a "Vibe Like No Other".
The island was once inhabited by various indigenous groups. Pottery found on Saint Croix dates the presence of people there to at least a thousand years before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1493. Since the Columbus arrival on the island, Saint Croix switched hands more than any of the Virgin Islands and the indigenous population was dispersed.
Today the population is primarily made up of descendants from Africa, persons from Puerto Rico and the United States, and communities resulting from waves of migration from Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Palestine and the Philippines. Today, less than half of the U.S. Virgin Islands population is native-born. We believe the mix of people, cuisine, history and geographical beauty coupled with its laid-back vibe is a wonderful opportunity to experience something completely new.

Aide
We need a farmsitter to take care of our pets, plants and property May 17- June 3rd.
The job consists of 4 days training and 11 days of farm sitting. There are 7 dogs and one cat. The dogs have been trained in rotation to be inside and outside at different times. The sitters job is to maintain this schedule and care for the property. We will go over the schedule as well as daily tasks in training. There is also a copy available in the house. The sitter is to check in at least once a day. Qualified candidates will be asked for an interview. The chosen candidate will receive a paid roundtrip flight to the island.
Other duties include watering plants and being a point of contact for us and the goings-on at the farm.
An ideal candidate has excellent communication skills, enjoys the company of animals and a rural setting. This is a sober household. No intoxicants are permitted on the property. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking for a personal retreat. There are hiking trails on and nearby the property. The sitter will not have the use of a vehicle (unless they choose to rent one). The property is a 45 min walk to the beach and a 1hr 45 min walk to the nearest town and convenience store. We will take the sitter to get groceries during training.

Hébergement
The sitter will enjoy a paid 5 nights in a hotel while they are training. We need to ensure you're a qualified candidate for the position. The sitter will then stay on the farm for the following 11 nights and receive $150 a day. We reserve the right to cancel the farm sitting offer at any time we feel the candidate is unfitting.
The house is a small studio cabin on 10 acres. Amenities include air conditioning, TV, internet and hot water. Pets live in the house. No guests, parties or intoxicants are permitted on the property.
Our farm is located in the "Rainforest" section of the island. While not entirely off-grid, the area lacks the amenities and easy access of stateside urban areas. There are no visible neighbors from the property. The setting is relaxing, quiet and beautiful. If you're an animal lover looking to "get away from it all" for a few days, this Workaway is for you!
Autres infos...
Close to the farm are stunning beaches, world class snorkeling, hiking in the Rainforest, opportunities to attend farm dinners at a neighboring farm and the nearby town of Frederiksted to purchase the essential toiletries and basic food items. "Hitching" is still a common form of transportation on the island, though we are in a rural area and passersby and ride-sharing is not always available.
