    Description

Nestled within the lush Costa Rican jungle near Arenal Volcano, Protopia is an intentional community,
permaculture farm and retreat center. Protopia refers to a vision of a better future that is continuously evolving and improving, rather than reaching a fixed state of Utopia.

At Protopia, we envision a world where every individual is empowered to thrive in harmony with themselves, each other, and the earth. Through our dedication to fostering growth, freedom, and heart-centered connection, we aspire to create a global community that embraces authenticity, spirituality, and earth stewardship.

Together, we are co-creating a future where sacred wisdom is honored, and holistic well-being flourishes, inspiring positive transformation in ourselves and for future genarations .

Using nature as inspiration and guide, we are building a vibrant hub empowering people to make the world a better place for our big human family and all the other beings that we share this beautiful planet with.

The main space consists of a 300 sqm common building — containing a lounge area, kitchen, dining area, a work space, and a mezzanine. Beyond that, two dorms, nine private rooms and two private cabins; Also, a 180 sqm octagonal movement space that is available for yoga, meditation, workouts, etc. The entire installation can host thirty to forty people at the same time

The place was built with most materials from the surroundings, with the least environmental impact possible; and was mounted in one year hand-by-hand by managers, international volunteers, and local workers jointly. Since then, a lot of people have been coming and going; joining to co-live and co-create a beautiful place through art, activism, and compassion.

Our Creative Residencies/Work Exchange Program is an integral way of becoming a part of our community. It allows the participants to cover their accommodation costs, a substantial part of their expenses, through their passions. This will give them the opportunity to engage in life long relationships and learn what it takes to live on a permaculture farm/community.

We prioritize experienced work exchangers that cater to specific talents and skills, focusing on the realms of tropical farming, natural building, construction, regenerative arts, content creation and conscious cooking. Our aim is to provide a nurturing environment where individuals can immerse themselves in these disciplines, fostering their creativity and honing their expertise. We are looking for independent individuals who are capable to take initiative and add value without the need of constant supervision.

Please note that accommodation will be in shared rooms.

3 hours of gardening or natural building with Erika or Jianca (our farm and natural building managers) per week days. (15h/week). Depending on your skills and passion you can potentially contribute hours somewhere else.

As we are still starting to run this program. we ask for an optional fee to cover food costs of 10$ per day and would reduce your hours to 15 per week. You can also opt out of this and also have the option of buying your own food.

Cooking is a co-creation amongst everyone and does not count in the 15h/week.

Weekends are free and we usually go for adventures 🌊

We want volunteers that are autonomous and emotionally mature.

*Note that the activities are not canceled when there is rain, so we ask our volunteers to bring a raincoat if they need one.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Sending love,
