  • Description

We are a not-for-profit organization based in Bocas del Toro, Panama. We hold programs on Saturday mornings for children of the archipelago to learn or practice surfing. Using surfing as a platform, we help connect the younger generation of our community to a bright and sustainable future. We develop and coordinate mentorship programs for children and teens focused on spreading environmental knowledge, discipline, creativity, respect, and love. We welcome participants from all walks of life to our program in an effort to unite our community over a shared love of waves.

We are based in Bocas Town on the island of Isla Colon in the Bocas del Toro archipelago of Panama. A gorgeous little Caribbean town with a lot of history, Bocas has something for everyone - beautiful beaches, great scuba diving and surfing, vibrant night life, and so much more. Workawayers will be staying in the Selina hostel, located in the center of Bocas Town and just a quick water taxi away from visiting other islands. The population of Bocas is a mixture of Latino, Afro-Caribbean, and Ngobe-Bugle (the local indigenous tribe) cultures, all of which bring their own language and practices to the everyday way of life. Living here is completely immersing yourself in the laid-back and fun loving way of life of our people - you'll be interacting with local families on a daily basis, experiencing first hand what island life is all about. You might end up staying longer than you expected! ;)

We are looking for energetic travellers who love working with kids and are looking to give back - knowing how to surf is not a requirement, but definitely helps! Volunteers would be responsible for helping organize and participate in the program day; this would include activity preparation (if not surfing, organizing programming which can include other sports, environmental education, art projects, etc.), moving boards to and from repair shops, visiting islands in the archipelago to register children, attending the program day and assisting the director. Knowing basic Spanish is also an asset, but not necessary!

Helpers will be staying in Selina Hostel on Calle 1, downtown Bocas Town, one of Bocas' most popular and comfortable places to stay. The hostel is in the middle of town and right on the water with a full restaurant & bar downstairs and various yoga and fitness classes available daily. Helpers will be staying in a bunk bed in a shared room. Food is not included, but a kitchen is available for residents to cook for themselves.

Bocas is very bike-friendly and biking is usually the primary means of transportation. Helpers will have the afternoon off to head to any of the stunning beaches in the area (Bluff Beach is a must-visit!), head on a boat tour (Bird Island or Dolphin Bay), or just hang around with the locals.
