  • Description

    Description

We are a family of four living in an old half-timbered house outside Vordingborg.

Mum works with schools on sustainability projects, dad works on development projects with local (sailing) associations, and we speak Danish and German at home. Our daughter is turning three in late summer and is in Kindergarden, our son is five months old. We have a forest as a direct neighbor which we use a lot for walks, and the coast is only a 10 minute walk away. Mum loves kayaking and dad loves sailing.

We have renovated our house and have created a cosy guest section for Workawayers, with a private bathroom, a room with a balcony and a small kitchenette too.

We are experienced in cultural exchange as we have hosted several “bonus Grannies” who have helped with out children and around the house. We’d describe ourselves as openminded and social, and we share meals with you (and the work!) . In our area, there are many possibilities for outdoor activities in the forrest and along the coast, and also arts and culture (especially on the island of Møn which is located in our proximity).
We hope to share our skills regarding biobased materials and rainwater garden design, and hope to learn from you (in similar areas, or in a different one: We’re curious about food from different cultures).

We need to transform our old thatched half-timbered house and our garden into a climate-adapted set-up that can handle moisture from amounts of rainwater, as we are experiencing cloudbursts every year and the water moistens up our outer walls. Our house has a thatched roof and we want to recreate the traditional surfacing of the walls (lime plaster). Also, we want to lead water away from the house and into bioretention beds where rainwater can accumulate during extreme rainfall events.

Workawayers will help us with re-creating the traditional surfaces of the house. We can teach you about the clay, lime plaster and other bio-based and breathable materials. We have a professional wood worker on site who solves the more complex maintenance tasks, but we ourselves do some of the lighter tasks which we’d like help with.

Also, we are about to establish a traditional swale with round stones that are placed at an angle away from the house. The heavy lifting will be done soon by machines, but the creative part of putting down smaller stones in a traditional pattern remains.

Kirsten has been working on biobased materials and raingardens in educational contexts and we are happy to share our knowledge.

We have a newly renovated section in our house that is available for you, including a very nice room with balcony and a double bed, a small kitchenette and a private bathroom. There is a separate entrance to the guest section. Please note that the ceilings are low, so if you are very tall, you’ll have to watch your head!

We can also provide camping and a location for a camper van, including power. We have an outdoor shower (but at the moment, it is not connected yet…)

You will join us for three daily meals, and you are welcome to cook for us once in a while, too.
