    Description

The little village we live in (meaning "the fish bay") is small.. VERY small.... ACTUALLY, we are the only ones permanently residing here. This gives you quietness, stillness, peace and all the freedom you can imagine. We - meaning Birgit (48), Leo (13) and Ida (10) with our 2 dogs Svea (4) and Luna (2). We are from the Austrian Alps originally and migrated to Fiskviken in autumn 2018. Our farm is located directly at a beautiful lake and surrounded by nature as long as you can see. The winters are long, sometimes up to 6 months, and challenging and more beautiful than I could ever describe. The summers are intense, full of light, joyful, green. Our house dates back to the end of the 19th century, painted in classical Falu red with white corners... it can not get more Swedish than this. So if you decide to live with us you will get it all: the little red farm in the middle of the Swedish forest with lake at the south side and wild animals all around but no neighbors in walking distance. Even if the house is small, our land around isn't and both need to be taken care of. And this is where YOU may enter the picture. We need people who love to be and work outdoors, are skilled, handicraft (wood, electricity, metal, paint,..), with a good common sense and the willingness to work independently. We would love to have people around who are good at finding practical thus stylish solutions to our housing project (renovating and redecorating the house). You can cut trees, make firewood, work in our joiner worksite, plant vegetables in our 25m long greenhouse, pick berries in the forest, take care of our chickens and dogs, build a terrace,... there is maybe more work to do than what your time allows.. so please consider: the journey into the heart of Sweden is a long one but easily accessible by plane or train from Stockholm (1hour flight, 5hours train ride) or Trondheim (3 hours drive or train ride). So take enough time (min. 2 weeks) if you are planning to help at our farm. I am pretty sure we are giving you a hard time leaving Fiskviken again anyway.

Reconnect with nature in Sweden's beautiful and breathtaking wilderness by living and helping us on our little farm with a big greenhouse, 20 chickens, 2 dogs, 2 openminded and warmhearted kids and a multilingual mom with a gipsy spirit. People with lots of curiosity, inventor-talent, craftsmanship of all sorts (woodwork, gardening, plumbing, electricity, mechanic, ...) and an impromtu mind are more than welcome in the middle of Sweden (and yes, Sweden is longer than you think and we do live up north in the woods with real winters, nordic lights, reindeers, moose, bears and lynx). In our region you will be able to experience the uniqueness of nature in the north of Sweden: we count 5 seasons a year:
☀️SUMMER: beginning in the middle/end of May with the sun being up almost 24 hours, nature explodes at that time: so this is our peak season for gardening, planting, painting outdoors (usually no mosquitos yet up till May. They tend to "show up" in June and July but easily manageable with herbal oils and the right clothing - and as so often: reality is not as worse as its reputation!
🍂AUTUMN: starts in September and paints the most beautiful pictures you can imagine: colorful forests, a calm lake and the sun being around quite often and yet the message you get from nature is clear: prepare for shorter, darker and colder days and appreciate the light and the colors! Not only the red, orange and brown leaves color this period, also the dark blue, radiant turquoise, vibrant green and mystical violet of the first northern light at night will show up at this time of the year. It is also high noon to secure all things outdoors for the snowy season and the garden gets its last "haircut" - some fruits and vegetable might still be growing in the greenhouse and the forest is offering plenty of food: cranberries, mushrooms, lingon - cooking jam, harvesting potatoes, drying mushrooms, changing tires, mounting chains and securing the window roof of the greenhouse are some of our autumn duties.
❄️WINTER: starting in November with short days (though the sun does show up from time to time), misty mornings, trees loosing their leaves, frosty nights and every little blade of grass getting covered by ice flakes: a time to calm down, look inward, doing work in the carpentry, final works in the greenhouse, renovating indoors, decorating outdoors.
🌱SPRING: usually the last snow melts in April and the landscape is rather muddy, brownish and sad but within the glimpse of an eye everything is sprouting and showing up: nature is waking up really fast! Swallows and cranes are our spring-ambassadors and by the end of May the meadows are in full bloom! This is the time we start planting in the greenhouse and outdoors, harvest our precious birch water, build the outdoor area for our chicken, open up water cranes outdoors and go for a first swim in the lake.
🌟SPRING-WINTER: that is Jämtlands (that's what the region up here is called) uniqueness: in March /beginning of April the landscape is still coved with snow but the days are longer, warmer and often full of sunshine but during the nights the temperature still drops below 0 degrees Celsius: perfect conditions for long hikes with cross-country our mountaineering skis, snow scooter tours, alpine skiing or ice fishing. But also perfect conditions for cutting trees for the next winter with the help of a chainsaw and a snow scooter with a tailer. Physical strength and the capacity to work with a chainsaw are definitely needed at that time of the year!

So.... if you want to come as close as possible to the (Swedish) cliché of a life in the wilderness by picking berries, searching mushrooms, fishing, hunting and cutting trees, making firewood, growing your own vegetables and fruits, - ours is the place to be! Take your chance and live the northern way of Swedish life in the rhythm of nature on our little farm!

We love to cook! We are curious about new dishes from all over the world and food for 3 meals a day will be provided. We are meat-eaters and have our own meat (moose, goat, pig, chicken, turkey) and all sorts of vegetables grow on our farm/in the greenhouse. Ecological planting and traditional processing methods are applied. We also try to include as much seasonal and regional food as possible (fish, berries, mushrooms, herbs) in our diary. Vegetarians and vegans are so welcome on our farm but it would be nice if you do not mind us cooking a dish including meat as well as we'd rather not eat vegan/vegetarian every day 😜. But whether or not our workaway guest will do any cooking at all might also depend on their abilities and preferences.

✈️🚆If you do not come with your own car (pick up at the airport or train station in Östersund will be organized), you can use our 2nd car but you need to know how to drive a car with a manual gearshift.

🏬Östersund is 70km from our home, no heavy traffic on the road is to be expected at any time. Driving on dirt roads or with spike tires on snowy surfaces in winter is required.

    🏄🏻‍♂️🏇🏻🏊🏻‍♀️🚣🏽🚴🏻‍♀️🧗🏻‍♂️
You can bring your x-country equipment and start skiing right next to the house. The snowmobile tracks also start at our farm. Swedens most famous alpine skiing resort (Åre) is within an hours drive. Östersund has a climbing hall and a nice indoor swimming pool with a wellness area and in summers our lake is just a few steps down the hill. So bring your SUP, kayak or windsurf or kite equipment - you will never ever find better and more "lonely" conditions in your life to enjoy all kinds of water sports! You can enjoy fishing on the lake (with our boat) or go fly fishing at numerous rivers nearby . The huge net of hiking trails in the mountains (fjäll) starts in our proximities. Horse riding and biking are also very popular up here.

We are a non-smoking household (smoking outside is an option) and alcohol is consumed on the weekends in the evenings to chill & grill at the fireplace or on special occasions.
