    Description

The boat is presently located at a marina at Puerto Lindo, on the Caribbean side of Panama, near the historic seaport of Portobelo. The boat is a modern, 48 foot long, 25 foot wide, sailing catamaran, built in France, 2008, and is equipped with kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, snorkeling gear, fishing rods, a guitar, yoga mats, DVD videos, and music, as well as books and magazines that are appropriate to learning and reading about sailing, etc....

Capt. Fred sometimes arrives at the marina with family or guests to stay overnight on the boat, and to sail in the area of Puerto Lindo. Occasionally we make a voyage to-from San Blas which can take a few days to a week or more, and we may take on guests that pay for a private "charter" of 1 to 7 days. But more often, the boat is at the marina, and the Workawayer is alone onboard at that time.

When guests are onboard, the Workaway opportunity guest hospitality (prepare meals for up to 10 persons, make-up rooms, general clean up, etc...), and to help sail the boat. So when guests are onboard, this is pretty much a full time job. When the guests pay for a charter, there is remuneration to the Workawayer. Some overlap with the outgoing Workawayer is needed for training, and at this time, when doing 1 or 2 charters together, the outgoing Workawayer receives the remuneration. Altogether, including training, you should consider 3 months. Some Workawayers ask to stay longer which is also possible if decided before a replacement is invited.

When guests are not onboard, at the marina or at anchor, the opportunity involves living aboard while performing boat maintenance, and occasional shopping or errands, and with plenty of time to enjoy Puerto Lindo, and nearby Portobelo, Isla Grande, Cacique, along with water sports, and getting to know and learning from others in the marina. At these times there is no remuneration, but accommodations and food are provided, along with use of the equipment onboard. More detail on that below.

Due to limited berths, only one Workawayer can be accommodated at time, except when an outgoing Workawayer is training an incoming Workawayer. Couples please do not apply, as this is simply not feasible. Also note that the meals are not vegetarian, vegan, etc...., therefore dietary restrictions cannot be accommodated. If you suffer from motion sickness (car sickness, sea sickness) this will not be pleasant for you.

Your security and the security of the boat and equipment is important. While at the marina or at anchor, no other persons are allowed aboard the boat, or to use the equipment, which the Workawayer is there to enforce.

This opportunity is not for Workawayers looking for much nightlife, binge drinking, 'funsundays', etc...

Learn to sail or exercise your sailing skill when the itinerary allows. Absorb the local history and culture. Time ashore will be available to explore Puerto Lindo and nearby Portobelo (where fortresses and cannons attest to the gold once shipped from the Americas to Spain, and the pirates that roamed to loot). Isla Grande is a popular holiday spot and beach nearby the marina for folks from Panama City). A range of PADI approved diving certification courses are available locally (Google "Reef Divers, Puerto Lindo, Panama" for course and cost information).

Most of the time, the average worktime 3 hours per day at the marina or at anchor nearby the marina. When sailing, each day requires 8 hours watch-standing at the helm (a rotation with others of 4 hours on, 8 hours off). When guests are onboard, the day becomes full time. When the guests are "charter" guests (guests that are paying to be aboard by the day), there is remuneration for the Workawayer of $100 per day for the same dates that the guests are paying, plus an extra $100 for extra effort to prepare for and clean up after the charter. When an outgoing Workawayer is training an incoming Workawayer during charter, the renumeration is for the outgoing Workawayer.

Food and accommodation aboard is always provided.

Prior sailing experience is of interest ** but not required *** so please be clear about this in your inquiry. Also your ability and experience with cooking, which is at a high level when guests are onboard, or with any specific type of general maintenance you may be good at (such as with computers, woodworking, electrical, etc...). There is a possibility to work on the website, video editing, Instagram and Facebook posting, etc... so if you are interested and have that type of experience, please also let me know. In any case, we will tailor the opportunity to suit your interests as much as possible.

There are also return possibilities.... nearly all Workawayers have returned within year later. Returning Workawayers get first priority for future openings.
