Description
After re-foresting and conserving old-growth forest on a 70 hectare (173 acres) property, we are now making it accessible to blind people and people in a wheelchair through an all-accessible trail
In summer we rent a small cabin in the woods
Slowly we are transforming degraded farmland in a permaculture farm and food forest.
This Spring, Summer and Autumn we need volunteers to help us gather wood from our forest to make mulch for our vegetable and flower garden.
We are a family of four:
-Grecia : born on the island of Chiloé, 4th generation artisan
Teaches weaving on the traditional and Swedish loom
-Tamara : Grecia’s daughter, loves basketball, music, traveling, foreign languages, swimming
-Gabriel : our new member of the family... Born in October 2013
-Jeroen : Belgian citizen since 2005 living on the Archipelago of Chiloé. Jeroen is a chef, farmer and tour guide

You will learn about (native) tree planting, sustainable living, alternative energy and the native fauna and flora.
At home we speak Spanish, Dutch and English so you can practice any of these three.
Aide
We are setting up a sustainable farming and living school and our first mission is to identify the local fauna, flora and fungi.
We have an old barn that needs to be cleaned out so that we can start upgrading it for outdoor classes.
This summer we'll be also preparing a field to replant with native forest.
For that we have to take down old fences.

A cozy waterproof teepee tent, a separate toilet and bathroom and wood stove powered showers
A re-furbished traditional Chilote wooden house is the kitchen and living space or sleeping space in case of very cold weather
Cooking is done by the volunteers.

What do we offer in return of your work:
-Accommodation and food ( cook your own) for 3 meals a day .
-Lessons on re-forestation and sustainable land management in general
-Clean skies The southern hemisphere sky is great for observing the stars. The closest cities are at 30 and 80 km so there is little light pollution. If you have an iPod, iPad or similar device, the ‘SkyView’ app helps you distinguishing the constellations and shows the names of stars, planets, comets etc...
-Lots of information about the region and the best places to visit
-A quiet and peaceful place with lots of birds and the occasional native deer, the second smallest in the world
-A river is close by to kayak and a nature reserve and national park are in the vicinity to hike and camp

It was a pleasure to take part in Jeroen's beautiful project.
My work consisted in cutting mulberry trees, taking down an old fence, stacking wood & other small tasks.
I was lucky to watch countless animals (many bird species, pudu, frogs...). I could also meet other people from the Chepu community thanks to Grecia.
Very nice overall !

It was a real delight to have Wouter at our place and he worked very hard at the building of a wooden kitchen in the guesthouse.
We are eternally grateful for the beautiful work he did.
Wouter has also many (travel) stories to tell as he is traveling by bicycle.

Els and Freek enthusiastically worked two weeks at our farm and made some beautiful furniture for the guesthouse. They even cooked a typical Belgian meal on my wife's birthday!
It was a pleasure to have Els and Freek here and I can highly recommend them to any Workaway host.

We have spent a wonderful week at Alihuen !
The perception of space and time is different there as you are observing pudus or hummingbirds. At night, everything just stops under the sparkling sky :-)

I had a really great week at the farm! Jeroen and his family are lovely people and the farm and the work they do is beautiful!

I stayed with this family for 11 days and it was an amazing experience. Jeroen, Grecia and their children are great people who are an absolute pleasure to volunteer for. The volunteers cabin is very nice and spacious, and the land they live on is beautiful. I would recommend this experience to anyone!

I've stayed with Jeroen for 10 days and I just loved it. His place and his projects are incredible and it was amazing to be part of it. I wish the best and hope to go back one day in the future to see how's it going :) Thanks for all, Jeroen! Keep going, you are an example for me :)
