Description
Hi I need some help for a week or two from 22nd January 2025 if you are available that would be great. I generate some of my own power with solar electric and solar hot water, make muesli, laundry detergent, soap, jams, preserves, seed saving, grow beef and vegetables, cook on a wood burning stove in winter and keep bees for honey. While I do these things I don't do them every day as farms are seasonal. I have a variety of animals and general jobs that are ongoing and various. Most of the help at the moment is in the permaculture food forest mulching (with a machine) wood and putting it on the food forest after it has been weeded.
Your separate accommodation is in a tiny house which has a private kitchen, bathroom, lounge and mezzanine bedroom plus an outside deck area. There is one big bed in the mezzanine bedroom and a sofa bed in the lounge which sleeps 2. I provide your food but you will need to do your own cooking. This is a shared helper space.
I also teach beekeeping, horticulture and permaculture courses.
There is about an acre of pyo (u pick) blueberries though Work aways will not be helping in any business activities, and that the produce they help with is not sold to the public. September, October and November is the time to prepare (weed) the house vegetable gardens for planting and I am also establishing a small permaculture food forest.
This is a small farm but I generate some of my income from it so is an example of how to do that if you are interested. Fred and Wilma are the dogs and they love helpers and are super friendly.
I can cater for Vegetarians but not Vegans.
Smoking is ok outside.
If I am collecting you from Silverstream train station I will need to collect you from there at 6pm preferably on a Sunday.
This is an organic farm so principles of composting, eating seasonal food, reduce, reuse and recycle are things that are done on a daily basis.
Cell phone reception is vodafone and spark not 2 degrees and we have Starlink internet.

Because I have been living an environmentally friendly lifestyle for so long it is normal for me so I don't always think to point out why I do certain things so please feel free to ask a lot of questions. Look around you and observe. This is a busy little place with a lot going on behind the scenes.

Accommodation is in a tiny house especially created for workaways and is a shared space. I am not vegetarian but vegetarians are welcome with appropriate food supplied. Smokers welcome if you smoke outside. There is space for campervan parking.

As there is no public transport to the farm I can collect you from Silverstream Railway Station. This is on the Upper Hutt Railway Line & about 40 min out of Wellington Central. I can meet you outside the New World Supermarket close to the train station.

You have to be rigorous and autonomous.

We spent a week at Carolann’s, helping with establishing additional volunteer accommodation, moving furniture and fixtures, assembling an innovative bio-digestor plant ands helping with modifications in the refurbished railway wagon. An interesting and full week in a lovely secluded location and thankfully some reasonably good weather.

Til is a great worker who works well unsupervised. He will always ask if unclear about something instead of just carrying on. Til was here for two weeks and achieved a lot of varied tasks during that time. He is easy to get along with and good to have a conversation with. I stayed on the farm for three weeks and helped with insulation and painting the inside and outside of the old train carriage. Carolann is an amazing conversation partner with information about everything, I learned a lot about our ecosystem and the permaculture way to approach our time on this planet.

I had a fantastic time with Carolann! It wasn't blueberry season so I was helping with many other jobs around the farm, especially preserving her apple harvest. Carolann taught me so much about living self sufficiently.
The food is excellent. Meat and veg from the farm and eggs from the hens everyday.

Very nice place to stay, quiet and Carolann is very friendly.

Darren will be an asset to anyone. He is not only an exceptional artist but a great handy man who can fix any problem. This combination is very unique. Darren ended up staying for a month and was a delight to have around with his cheerful personality. You can leave him to work on his own without supervision and be happy with the job he has done.

Derek is a great volunteer willing to do all jobs asked of him and always wanting to do the best possible and if he doesn't understand he will always ask. He has a good sense of humor and is a really nice guy. I would have no hesitation recommending him to any host.

Carolann is a great host who is fair and very accomplished in what she has going on with the farm. She is kind, straightforward and to the point, I like this in a person. Carolann is an impressive lady in that she runs a sizable farm on her own. We both enjoyed the work we did for her, and it was rewarding to contribute to her lifestyle. What really made this experience valuable was meeting several other backpackers and spending lots of quality time with them - we definitely made some good friends here!

This place is really special if you know how to enjoy it. When you need social contact with wi-fi or people, you can always hop on in Carolann's car for a ride to the city or go down to the little bar called Cafe Espresso. Hitchiking back is easy and people will drive you back even if it's not on their way.

More than good, Carolann was an amazing host ! The different jobs such as planting garlic, painting, plastering, weeding ect has taught me a lot and the good atmosphere made everything much more fun.
