Hi, I'm Dora. I'm currently doing my masters degree in France. I'm a curious, creative, reliable and hard-working. Our experience with Dora was amazing! She taught English and French to both kids and adults for a month and showed great dedication. Dora is patient and kind, always happy to help others, and she easily makes friends. It was a pleasure to have her on our team of volunteers. We highly recommend her!

Wow! This was honestly one of the most beautiful Workaway experiences I've ever had! I don't even know where to start... I spent 1 month in Villa de Leyva and I have to say, it was really difficult to leave. The nature, the architecture, the people, it's just a magical place! This was my first stop in Colombia and in South America, and I think I… read more couldn't have wished for a warmer welcome.

As for the work, some classes take place in the language school (a lovely colonial building with a garden, orange trees and chickens :) ), some at students’ houses and some in rural schools near Villa de Leyva. I usually was teaching maximum 18 hours per week and I always received the schedule of the following week by Saturday or Sunday. I had the opportunity to teach both English and French, and I really enjoyed the time I got to spend with the students. Maybe the most enriching and challenging experience was going to the rural school, where I had to teach English to a group of 7-year-olds who had a lot of love and a lot of energy :D Apart from receiving a report for each group or student who we were going to teach, we were completely free concerning the structure, the material or the teaching method during our classes, which might be difficult at first for someone without teaching experience.

As for the accommodation, I lived generally with 3 other volunteers in a house 20 minutes from the centre of Villa de Leyva (by foot). It’s a bit sporty since it’s uphill but it’s completely manageable. The house is very spacious, there is a fully equipped kitchen, 3 rooms and 3 bathrooms, as well as a veranda-like outside area where you can isolate yourself for a phone call or just gaze at the stars at night. The wi-fi is excellent (in the school as well), so I would definitely recommend this Workaway to digital nomads, it is perfectly reconcilable with the teaching schedule. Be aware though (if you’re allergic or have phobias) that it is not uncommon to meet dogs, cats, spiders or cockroaches in and around the house. Furthermore, it is advisable to take into consideration that this Workaway does not include food at all which might be tricky for travellers with a minimal budget.

Apart from the classes I taught, I had the possibility to take free Spanish classes in the language school (4 hours per week). Personally, I was in the advanced group with no other volunteers which permitted to have personalised lessons. We had exclusively conversation lessons and it was really helpful in the process of improving my Spanish.

At last, I would like to mention that Villa de Leyva is a true confluence of different artistic and cultural events. I could recommend taking salsa classes (Movimiento latino), participating to percussion workshops (Intro Estudio Flamenco) or arts and crafts workshops (Tardes de Artes, Alma Bazar). I would also recommend Estación 20.03 and El Café Jardín for trying local specialities which are not so expensive. Besides, there are many beautiful places to visit nearby (Parque Iguaque, Pozos Azules, Cascada El Hayal, Cascada El Anillo, Ráquira, Embalse de Copa...)

All in all, I would recommend this opportunity for those who enjoy teaching and learning languages, who search a nice balance between culturally vibrant city life and the tranquillity of the countryside and those who would like to meet and exchange with wonderful people from Colombia and all around the world…
