Dear Hosts,

We are Kate and Maya, two friends from England. We have done one workaway together in Gran Canaria in 2023 and had a great experience of life on a finca helping with the animals, weeding, planting and digging irrigation channels. We also work together at music festivals in the summer, and we enjoy camping, dancing and meeting people.

Kate: I'm a a self employed painter and decorator so I am used to hard work and getting a job done well! Being self employed, I enjoy using the freedom this gives me to have adventures and take up interesting part time work as a way of exploring and meeting new people. I did a workawy in La Plama in 2024 and learnt to care for horses and fruit trees. I've also done a workawy in France where I learnt to use a chainsaw and got good at splitting logs with an axe, I have lived and worked in Zimbabwe and Egypt, and have traveled a lot in India and South America. I am motivated by living life to the full, which for me means having experiences rather than focusing on a career or earning lots of money. I am very easy going and easy to host. I have had lots of different jobs in my youth, including campsite warden, cleaning, bar and restaurant work, festival organiser, and charity development worker. I'm strong and used to hard physical work. I am good with most tools and can do basic woodwork such as putting up shelves, laying flooring, wallpapering, painting, chopping wood, carrying heavy loads, building walls etc.

Maya: Hi, I'm Maya. I work in art galleries and museums in Leicester and sometimes run art workshops for children and adults in community spaces. I live in the city but have a little off grid cabin in the woods for my retreat. I love to travel and where I can, I like to combine this with doing dance workshops in other countries. I've been to Africa and Cuba doing dance workshops in communities. I'm a hard worker and my strengths are in working with children and doing art projects, but I don't mind physical work as well and am happy to learn new skills.

Together we make a good team and bring lots of energy and enthusiasm to anything we do. In our last placement we made up a song to help us learn Spanish words for farm work. If you host us we might write a song for you too!

Kate:
I have plenty of experience with painting and decorating, but I prefer to do something different for a workaway as it is nice to have a change from my day job. I'd be happy to take on smaller projects such as hanging paper for a feature wall or painting items of furniture. I have lots of photos of my work and customer reveiws on my website: katedecorator.co.uk. My French workaway involved chopping wood to heat the house of my host. I learned to use a chainsaw and by the end of the 2 weeks was very good at splitting logs down with an axe. I also cleared brambles and did some pruning. On Gran Canaria I helped on a finca: Digging ditches, feeding the animals, weeding and planting. My work as a decorator keeps me very fit so I am good at tasks which require strength and stamina. I enjoy working outside and gardening, I can follow instructions and don't mind getting my hands dirty. I am pretty handy with most D.I.Y. tasks and if I don't know how to do something am confident to look it up and am not afraid to ask and learn new skills. I can use a drill and a jigsaw to do tasks such as putting up shelves, curtain poles, blinds etc. Overall, I'm a practical, strong person who is good at getting jobs done.
Maya: I am good at working with children and running workshops such as outdoor play and art sessions. I am fit and able to do physical tasks and enjoy gardening and painting. I like to learn dance from around the world and have done workshops in African and Cuban dance

We both love being outdoors in nature, whether camping, walking, cycling or swimming in the sea. We like to cook for people. Maya is veggie and Kate eats meat but is happy to stick to a veggie diet as well, Kate plays a bit of guitar and would like to improve, and Maya is very good at playing her percussion egg.
