Hi!

We’re Maria and Eduardo — two close friends, 19 and 18 years old and university students currently living in Portugal 🇧🇷🇵🇹. Maria is originally from Brazil and has been living in Portugal for the past four years. We are both starting our second year of university studying Engineering. We have just done our Interrail adventure across Europe, living meaningful experiences and truly connecting with local life through Workaway.

We’re both very adventurous and curious, always ready to help, learn, and dive into new experiences. We feel most alive when we're surrounded by nature — hiking, exploring new places, or simply enjoying fresh air. We also love discovering different cultures and learning from the people we meet along the way.

We each bring our own strengths to the journey. Maria is especially passionate about animals and has lots of experience volunteering with children and in community projects. She also loves teaching and currently gives lessons to kids — sharing knowledge and creating meaningful connections is something that brings her a lot of joy. Last year, she stayed with a host family during an Erasmus program in Ireland, which deepened her love for cultural exchange and living like a local.

Eduardo is very hands-on, positive, and adaptable. He enjoys cooking, cleaning, helping with tech, and is always happy to contribute however he can. He’s great at creating a fun, respectful, and collaborative atmosphere. He speaks both Portuguese and English fluently and is excited to take part in his first Workaway experience.

We’re especially interested in short stays (up to 2 weeks) in places like Italy, Croatia, Greece, France, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia... but we’re open to wherever this journey leads us! :)

We love connecting with people through language and culture! Like we said, we’re from Brazil and Portugal — so Portuguese is our native language, even if we have fun comparing our accents and expressions! We both speak English and a bit of Spanish, and we're always excited to learn more. We’d be happy to help others practice or learn Portuguese or English. More than just teaching a language, we love sharing our cultures — from Brazilian and Portuguese music, food, and traditions, to stories and everyday life. And of course, we're just as curious and open to learning from others wherever we go!

We’re both excited to share a bit about the skills we can bring!

I, Maria, love working with children — I currently teach kids and really enjoy connecting with them through play and learning. I’ve also done volunteer work, especially in projects involving children and local communities. I love caring for animals as well. I’m creative, empathetic, and love helping out with languages, especially Portuguese, English and some Spanish too!

And I, Eduardo, am very hands-on and practical. I enjoy cooking, cleaning, and helping with general maintenance or tech-related tasks. I’m the kind of person who’s always ready to jump in and solve a problem or support in whatever way is needed. I’m adaptable, calm, and like to keep a positive and respectful atmosphere around me.

Together, we make a great team. We’re responsible, curious, and always open to learning something new. We’re happy to help with a wide range of tasks — whether it’s around the house, looking after children or animals, sharing languages, or just bringing good energy to the space.

We enjoy cooking (and eating!), and we’d be happy to share some Brazilian and Portuguese recipes.

Some of our favorite things include taking photos, doing yoga, listening to music, being in nature, and watching good movies.
We also love sharing stories and learning from the experiences of the people we meet.

Maria's Perspective: 4 ★
To begin writing this, I honestly don’t know where to start. I embarked on this adventure with my best friend, Eduardo, and we had no idea what to expect — it was our first experience of this kind.
From the moment we got in touch with Frits, we felt a strong connection due to his openness and humanity. Unfortunately,… read more during our time at the farm, he wasn’t there, so we didn’t have the chance to meet him in person.
On our first day, Henk welcomed us with a smile and explained how everything worked, showing a genuine interest in getting to know us. He gave us the budget and we went straight out shopping to explore the surroundings. And it was instant: we were in paradise.
The area is full of color — green, yellow, blue… As we walked (long walks!), we came across places that seemed to compete with each other in terms of beauty, peace, and perfection. Each little town with its own uniqueness.
We chose to always work together — after all, we were living this experience side by side. We also asked to change our days off so we could enjoy longer trips to farther cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Cologne, and Henk was very understanding and accommodating.
He also always asked what we enjoyed doing and what we didn’t, and in the end, we fully dedicated ourselves to gardening: we went all around the house pruning and weeding. Sometimes we fed the chickens, the adorable rabbits, and walked the sweet dog, Vita, who lives on the property.
The work was tough (physically demanding), but it was very rewarding to see that we managed to complete everything we were assigned. At times we thought we wouldn’t make it, but we succeeded! I think this was the only “negative” part of the whole experience — feeling like we might not be able to handle everything (the work was really intense), and we had never done anything like it before, but in the end, everything worked out. On second thought, the worst part was definitely the mosquitoes at night! There were so many, we were constantly killing mosquitoes just to get some peaceful sleep (but they never really went away!)...
The best parts of the day were definitely the coffee breaks: we learned and exchanged so many ideas! Henk always asked about us, our goals, opinions, ideas, and also shared about his life. It was an incredible exchange that allowed us to learn a lot in different areas. Plus, we ate a lot of cookies (we were the “cookie monsters”!). Henk even saved us one day when we were walking back from Ruurlo — the nearest train station — in heavy rain. We’ll never forget that. Sometimes, like everyone, Henk seemed a bit upset and had some slightly “strange” attitudes or comments (not every day is a good day for everyone), but in the end, he gave us a warm hug and was very kind in our farewell.
Personally, this was a transformative opportunity for me. I had never felt so free, grateful, and happy as I did here. I felt alive. Far from many thoughts, just one day after another — in simplicity lies true happiness.
I could go on writing about all the feelings that came up during this experience for a long time, but I feel that words are not enough to describe everything we felt. The only advice I have is: LIVE! Live this opportunity to the fullest and be happy, because I’m sure you will be.

Eduardo's Perspective: 3★
Frits, was who we first connected before even had the decision made. Unfortunately, he wasn't present our whole stay. So, the only contact we had since the day we reached the farm, was Henk.
Henk is a good person. He listened to our needs; asked us about our work and even searched places for the places we were visiting! However, can be unpleasant with his words and actions throughout the stay. It takes resilience to deal with his part.
The work was very (!!) intense but with great company was made more enjoyable. Sometimes it can feel like your work it's not that recognized as you would like.
We would be pruning or weeding most of the time cause that's what we told Henk we enjoyed doing but there are other variety of work to do, such as making beds, washing clothes...
There are also some enjoyable animals in the farm that are heartwarming, such as the dog, rabbits, chickens... These ones will be your company most of the time you work!
Our accommodation was very nice, the room was comfortable and the toilet prepared for us. A less positive point was that we weren't told about the absurd quantity of mosquitoes that exist in the farm that can take you hours of sleep.
The environment of the farm was, in one word, peaceful! However it's worth-telling that this farm is also thoughtless - in a good way! Makes your mind slow down!
About the logistics. If by walk, it's tire-full. In the other hand, if by bike, it's easy doing.
This farm was also an improvement in our English, cause we daily practice it!
In conclusion, this experience was a mix of good and less great moments that turned out to give a 3 star punctuation to this volunteering. However, all experiences are different and somethings bother more ones than others.
