Hi, I'm Ty from Sydney, Australia :) I'm taking a gap year in 2023 and want to meet lots of new people and experience different cultures and lifestyles around the world so I can learn and grow!

  • Descripción

Hi! My name's Ty and this year, I've taken a gap year after finishing high school to really work on myself, broaden my horizons, meet new people, and experience and learn more about what life has to offer!

After travelling for over half a year now, I can definitely confirm that solo travelling has been one of the best decisions I've made in my life. It's really opened up my eyes a little more to how wide the world really is, and how many cool people with unique stories there are to be met. Not to mention all the incredibly unique experiences there are out there to be had. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to say I've done such unique things like harvested vegetables in the Japanese countryside (ghibli movie in real life), stayed with families all around France, cried while feeding stray cats on a Greek Island, walked a cow, hiked a volcano, vomited twice and had the water shut off all in one day in Hawaii, wrestled with goats (and sheep) to pin them down and inject them with medicine at an animal sanctuary, and the list only goes on!

Through all these experiences, I've learnt so many invaluable lessons, about life and myself (especially in regards to self-love, vulnerability, boundaries, shame, courage in the face of adversity, human connection, listening to emotion, and the cultivation of a more fulfilling life).

I've also made so many amazing friends all around the world who have really helped me through this journey by showing me new perspectives, and just being a great, new, unique empathetic person to be around.

Some of my favourite examples of these people would be a Spanish girl I met in Japan who came to Greece from India to hang out with me for a while, or an English girl I met in Hawaii who I stayed with in Paris, or a Singaporean couple I met in Japan that I always meet for dinner during my layovers, or a girl from London who I met in Japan and a German boy who I met in France that I will soon visit during the Christmas season. Workaway has really brought along SO many unique and special friendships that I cherish so much, and I hope that I can only continue to make more!

As of February 2024, I will be starting university in Sydney for a Psychology honours degree, but I still plan on travelling as much as I can! However, I've still got a little bit of time left this year, and during it I plan to:

    - Teach English in Morocco
    - Visit friends in France, Germany, and London
    - Spend time in Thailand with family

(let me know if you will be there, I love meeting new people!)

Besides that, I have lots of ideas (and as of yet not much money) for what I want to do during my future travels, and just life in general! This includes:

    - Volunteering in Lapland, Finland with huskies and dogsledding, or, frankly, any of the Nordic countries (and see the northern lights!!)
    - Volunteering in Indonesia teaching English, surfing, snorkelling, finding waterfalls
    - Volunteering in Tanzania teaching English and going on safaris (childhood dream! I wanted to be a zookeeper as a kid) (and, if money allows it, climb Kilimanjaro too!)
    - Backpack South East Asia
    - Travel to Nepal and Tibet
    - Live on a sailboat for a while!
    - Get my solo skydiving license
    - Get certified for scuba diving and free diving
    - Start volunteering for charities

The list goes on but that's just some of my top picks at the moment! Let me know if you're interested in doing any of them with me!! The more the merrier :D

In terms of my interests and what brings me happiness, there's a lot! I always believe that there's something to be happy and grateful enough if you look hard enough. Anyways, to list a few, I love spending time with friends and family, meeting new people, deep talks !!!!, eating/cooking/trying good new food, trying new things in general, photography and videography, playing sports (love muay Thai, surfing, volleyball and beach volleyball, a bit of running and always looking for opportunities to improve!). I also love learning new things, such as languages (currently learning French, so hit me up if you want to do some language exchange!!! Also very interested in learning Japanese or maybe Italian or Spanish or Chinese) reading books, journalling, meditating, travelling (of course), animals, nature, hikes, swimming, snorkelling, camping, drawing and creative projects, music (I play the piano!), jazz in particular, card games (I know the best card game in the world for 3+ people), movies and shows (I LOVE pokemon, anyone else?), sunsets, the moon and stars on a clear night, going on walks, listening to the rain . Again, the list only goes on, and I could go on for ages about everything I love doing.

I think that, at the end of the day, I just have a really big desire to embrace life with open arms and experience the magic of our existence because, if you think about it, our existence is really something magical. Like we're living on a floating PLANET in a UNIVERSE which is bigger than our mind can actually properly comprehend. We're mere blips in the timeline of this universe and it took billions of years of creation for us to get to where we are now. There are literally organisms that GROW through SUNLIGHT and WATER and produce FRUIT and FLOWERS and turn ORANGE during autumn and give us what we need to breathe??? And the fact that whales are a real thing?? And the fact that we are composed of the same material that forged the stars??? and the interconnection of all living beings??? Yea. Crazy. I wish more people would remember this.

Anyways, that was a little summary of me and I hope, whoever is reading this, workaway host, or fellow workawayer, that maybe we can meet one day and share a little moment in our lives together, to hopefully create amazing memories and learn great lessons from each other. Feel free to text me on here or my Instagram @ty.ponggun! I would love to chat :) I'll see you out there friends!!!

I love the idea of learning languages. I believe it allows you to connect with a completely new group of people on a new level of understanding. It opens up a lot of doors. I can speak English and Thai fluently, though I can only teach English because unfortunately I never wrote or read Thai growing up, I only spoke and listened. I'm intermediate in French, though I'm very interested in getting better. I'm also interested in learning just about any other language!

  • Que habilidades tienes?

In terms of practical skills, I have developed a lot of hospitality and people skills working in a restaurant for many years. I have also tutored school subjects, coached volleyball, done photography and media work, and am very capable with cleaning and housework (laundry, wiping, vacuuming, organising etc). I've also had experience working on a farm (with and without animals), renovations (cement mixing, digging, etc), and helping look after children.

Nevertheless, there are still a bunch of skills I have not yet learned! I am very interested in learning more skills and am open to trying new things :)
