Hello! My name is Tristan Porter.
I am a Franco-American, born and raised in Holland, a city in West Michigan, USA. Growing up next to one of the great lakes, I spent much of my time playing on the beach and swimming. I am very outdoorsy and some of my favorite memories are of road trips and camping in state and national parks. I love also pretty much all physical activities, from hiking to surfing to playing sports (especially soccer/aka football). I am always willing and ready to learn new activities.
Another passion of mine is of music. I love listening to music, and playing the piano, guitar, singing and writing my own songs. I hope to one day record an album :)
I am currently on a gap year from my studies and will be beginning medical school in Chicago next year. My goal is to become an ophthalmologist working with NGOs.
I have always been fascinated with traveling and getting to know people from different cultures and backgrounds. As I am currently on break, I hoped to fill my time with just that!
I look forward to embarking on exciting, new adventures as well as forming meaningful and lasting friendships along the way!

The numerous jobs I have worked at, as well as the diversity of experiences I have had, have taught me various skills. The many years I have worked in restaurants as a server have taught me teamwork skills. I quickly learned the importance of both being able to rely on others and helping others. In order to be successful in this environment, collaboration was key. As a soccer referee, I learned how to manage and defuse tense situations (when players and coaches weren't happy with the calls :) ). Working in nursing homes as a patient technician taught me to be compassionate and understanding, and working in hospitals as a nursing assistant taught me time-management skills as well as being able to remain calm and collected, especially while taking blood samples. As a research assistant in a chemistry laboratory, when satisfactory results were not initially produced, I learned the skills of patience and persistence. I am grateful for all the experiences that have allowed me to grow as an individual, and I strive to continue learning and improving myself with the experiences I will have.
