Hiya, I'm Fraser. :)

This is me just joining the site as I look to take time off from my studying at University. I live in Scotland in the UK where currently I'm studying to be a Nurse, while also working to support Adults with additional Mental and Physical Health needs, and homeless young people.

For all my life I've lived in my home Country, and while I've travelled a lot within its borders, I haven't really been overseas. But I'm looking to change that.

For the past few years I've been working as a Support Worker with Adults with additional needs (with the intention of becoming a Nurse in this sector when I graduate). Specifically with people who have conditions like Autism, Dementia, or Muscular Degradation. As part of the role this can involve doing cooking and house keeping for the Clients, running crafts classes, planning week long trips, or doing the admin of managing their bills and correspondence.

In the past seven months my job has moved into working with homeless young people living in temporary accommodation that the charity I work for operates. Which is a mix of maintaining the property, doing our best to give the clients a fulfilling time, and helping teach them skills. I'm on Workaway at the moment, and when I'm back at home this is a career I'm looking to develop - so if there's any volunteering opportunities in similar areas I'd like to give them a go whilst travelling. :)

Elsewhere, in my role as a Student Nurse, this similarly has had me out in the Community working with vulnerable Adults and Children. And while working in Hospital Wards there's a great focus on providing a high standard of care when it comes to cleanliness or making sure rooms are maintained as efficiently as possible.

My previous Careers have mostly been office jobs. Notably an IT Support role which involved me fixing Computer faults. I'd gotten into that job while studying my first University Degree in Business Technology - which was a somewhat broad degree that covered things like Tech Support, Software Development (C++, C#, Java), Data Entry, Word Processing, etc.

Volunteering has been a thing which I've participated in for many years now, doing things like running Arts and Crafts or History Groups for Children at local museums, or helping out in Foodbanks or Warehouses for Charities.

My hobbies tend to mostly have me out in my garden or working on crafts projects. We have small garden around our house mostly filled with flowers and a few fruit trees, and space for a green house and vegetable patch where we grow food. This has also led to a bit of Carpentry working - building a few sheds, benches and vegetable beds out of spare wood. My job also operates a Community vegetable garden which I help out on.

I'm into board games, and used to help organise events at my local club. And I do a bit of sculpting with clay, which I'd briefly dabbled in turning into a career (but never really progressed with beyond doing the odd commission).

I'm really open to anything when it comes to tasks - everything's a new experience, and you don't know until you try something.

In the warmer Months I try and get out into the Scottish Countryside for walks and exploring historical sites. Or spend time maintaining the garden, or doing work on our house (I just finished repainting the outside as I type this).

For just two weeks in January I stayed at Liljana's Animal Shelter in Vlora. Liljana has really put her heart into the place, and while it's always going to be an ongoing project, you can feel the love she has for the animals and everyone involved in helping.

The help that's asked for isn't too complex. A normal day involves feeding all the dogs,… read more cleaning their living spaces, and then giving them lots of hugs as they go out to play. Work starts at nine in the morning, and can be completed in a few hours (especially if there's more volunteers). Extra tasks may be needed each day- like helping clean the surrounding land, or reorganising the kennels; nothing too strenuous.

Honestly just giving the dogs attention felt like the core of the work, and all the dogs were lovely once you can gain their trust (which admittedly came quickly for me; I was giving belly rubs by the end of my first day). :)

Liljana could do with other help beyond what she's asked for at the moment, and perhaps she can find it with Workawayer. She does a lot of things herself, and has staff, but someone that can help her taking photos for her social media or promoting the shelter would be a help.

The volunteer accommodation is within the shelter, and Liljana and the staff live nearby usually. At the moment its a pair of shared bedrooms (though a third is planned), each with a bathroom. A kitchen, sitting room, etc. She's working on improving things all the time, and honestly, the living space is one of the nicer ones that I've encountered volunteering.

At the shelter Liljana has her own staff and volunteers who the Workawayers help out. They're good at directing things, and made me feel comfortable in the beginning- if there were dogs that hadn't gotten used to me then Lily would help out, and wouldn't have me do things I wasn't confident in.

Otherwise the shelter itself is located in Vlora, relatively close to the city centre and not much of a walk from where the bus drops you off coming from Tirana. There's plenty of shops nearby, and Liljana is keen to tell volunteers about good places to eat. Busses are frequent in Albania, so on your days off it wouldn't be much trouble to travel to touristy places.

When I was there I felt like every one of Liljana's long term staff and volunteers cared about the animals, and wanted to see the best for them. They all care, and ideally that's the sort of workawayer you are as well - able to see that they're doing what they can here, and putting the animal's welfare first.

I can only hope that the shelter sees more volunteers. It's a jem of a place if you're wanting to support animals that just really appreciate your love and affection. And it would be great if they could continue improving things with your help.

From late October to mid December I stayed with Hafize and shared life with her for two months at the end of the year. She'd said that she doesn't get many volunteers during the winter, so my experience may have differred than other volunteers she's had.

Hafize lives in a big house in the mountains south I'd the city of Antalya, a short walk… read more from Altinyaka village. She has a big garden full of fruit trees, and the whole mountainside is covered pine trees. You'll wake up every morning to see a vista of snow capped mountains (well, in Winter at least).

The mountains are beautiful and isolated, for those wanting to get away from city life. The village, Altinyaka, is a short 20 minute walk and has a small shop (the owner also operates a private bus to the nearest town for a fee). There's also hiking trails and the hills nearby are a fairly easy trek if you're looking for a change of scenery on the walk to the village.

During my time with her we'd also taken a few trips to Kumluca - 20 minutes drive away -, and spent time together in a flat in Antalya - 50 minutes drive away - for a few days at a time while she visited friends and it was a bit warmer in the Winter (Hafize did mention that she likes to stay in the mountains in the summer to avoid the city's heat then...).

I'd helped Hafize out with a mix of garden and house work mostly. Doing cleaning, and clearing the land initially. And preparing the house and garden for the winter. There were some tasks she'd wanted completed, like rebuilding a chicken coup or expanding her vegetable garden so they could be used in the Summer. Besides other sporadic things like collecting scrap wood for future building projects, harvesting her Quince, Fig and other fruits, or doing repairs following some heavy rain.

Day to day life was simple, and mostly spent with tasks and time with Hafize (and her cats). Each morning I'd empty the fire ash from the night before and resupply the fire for the upcoming night (which was used for heating the house and cooking - though Hafize has a regular gas oven too). And otherwise tidying the garden and letting the chicken flock out to forage. ...Besides making sure the chickens also didn't sneak in and eat all the cat food too.

Hafize makes all her meals at home, and there's plenty of opportunities to try local food with her. Fresh ingredients at the markets in town are affordable, so we seldom did without. During my time we were still harvesting fruit from the garden, which she'd often share with her friends in town or cook into jam or deserts. Oh, and the chickens kept us in a ready supply of eggs if you're wanting to use those for cooking breakfast. :)

If you're wanting to spend time somewhere rural, Hafize is good company - and I can only wish more people come and visit. She was going through some hardship while I was with her, and it's a shame that my Turkish wasn't stronger so I could have been a better companion to her in that time. She's a lovely person, and I'm sure her place would be a welcoming home to whoever decides to stay with her next. I'd really urge other Workawayers to consider her profile if looking for a host in the area, and couldn't give her less than the highest rating here.
