Hi! I'm a slightly burned-out software engineer (think about cloud infrastructure as in AWS, GCP, Kubernetes), so I am taking a break from the 9-5 routine to wind down, explore new places, try different lifestyles, and tackle long-postponed projects. In my past life, I owned a second-hand bookstore (think about Bernard from the TV show Black Books). I also undertook sailboat helmsman training, and that's how I learned sailing is not my cup of tea :D

I'm diving back into photography, something very close to my heart. I love capturing everything from landscapes and street photography to the quiet beauty of black-and-white portraits.

I do intermittent fasting, try to eat well ("We are what we eat", Ludwig Feuerbach), get quality sleep, and do regular workouts. Something I miss when on the road is my homebrew water and milk kéfir. I also have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Nano, which I found as a stray. The guy's full of energy and charm in a compact package.

I fell in love with Finland during my visit in 2022 (check my photos section!). From Tampere to Pori to Laitila to Helsinki -- each place left a lasting impression. If you ever find yourself in Pori, don't miss the Porispere music festival and the Satakunnan museo. Hostel River, though a bit on the expensive side, is such a warm place to stay. At Helsinki, I loved the National Museum of Finland exhibitions, learning about the city's history and seeing how Kampi evolved since the first people settled there; there was also an exhibition featuring Finnish photographers that left a profound mark on me to this day. And I happened to meet the guys from Beast in Black at the airport when going back to Amsterdam 🤘

Recently, I watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty again. I like most Ben Stiller movies, and that one was inspiring to me. I came up with my version of the movie motto: "To see the world and witness great events, to venture beyond the ordinary and discover the unseen, to capture simple moments of life, to draw closer, find each other. This is the essence of life."

I have some skills under my sleeve:

- I'm a tech troubleshooter (think fixing Wi-Fi woes on the go!).
- I can teach you how your computer and devices work, but more importantly, how the internet works (at a technical level, at least!)
- I can help with some web design and web hosting stuff.
- I'm all about being a "sovereign netizen": data sovereignty, compute sovereignty, and connectivity sovereignty. I can tell you about online privacy, GNU/Linux & BSD, and software freedom! ✊
- I'm a native Spanish speaker -- and I've got the most fabulous accent, the one from the Río de La Plata: ¡Hablemos en castellano! Note that I purposely say 'castellano' instead of Spanish. Did your curiosity bite already? Good, I can tell you all about it ;-)
- I'm not a cook, but I know a few great red meat recipes (my "milanesas" and "empanadas" are so good). Funnily enough, I'm leaning towards vegetarianism these days.
- I do a good part of my home maintenance; I can help with stuff like painting, some electricity work, home gardening, maybe building something.
- Last but not least, I can take good pictures even though I'm not a professional photographer.

There is little I could add to what other WAs already said about the Ryhänen family. In my case, I spent six phenomenal weeks with them. I could write about how warm they are, making me feel part of the family from the moment Johanna picked me up at the train stop to when she kindly drove me back to the same train stop when I left for my next… read more WorkAway early in the morning. The kids are lovely, each one in its unique way; Johanna was always asking how I was doing and if I needed anything, and they even took me with them to Toni's parents' home, where I met his mom (a lovely woman!), his brother (another cool automation engineering dude!), and his brother's little daughters, for a family meal (WOW). Also, we enjoyed a great metal fest night with Toni at Nokia's Kerhola (IMMORTAL METAL vol I), where I listened live for the first time to Alcoholica (lol!!!), Elinkautinen and Convulse 🎸🥁🤘🤘🤘 I also met some locals who asked me to take some pictures of them; it was a great night overall!

Speaking about music, you will love this WorkAway if you are a musician; it will be a treat for you: there are guitars all over the house, a beautiful piano (https://geyer-pianos.com), a djembe, and even a contrabass! Trust me, you don't want to miss out.

Other than that, it's worth mentioning their home is in a beautiful, calm neighborhood a bit outside of the keskusta (the city downtown). Luckily, there's a bus stop that takes you right to Tampere's keskusta less than a hundred meters away from the house; there's also a grocery store where you can find a bit of everything should you aren't in the mood to go to Tesoma or Lailahti, the nearby biggest commercial centers (kauppakeskus), or straight to Tampere's downtown.
The neighborhood is so beautiful that I spent my first week or two wandering around it, at first just walking and later biking longer distances. If you like nature, you'll feel right at home here (be sure to grab some water and your photo camera with you!).

Tampere is a beautiful city with a long and fascinating history worth exploring. Together with Johanna, we created a quick guide that includes the places you might be interested in visiting, the places you should see, and some tips for getting around. Trust me when I say you will be moving around like a local in no time!

At the moment of leaving them, they were planning the work to do in the basement, which, if I recall correctly, included a playroom and the sauna. There are always tons of stuff to do outside, too, both in their backyard and puutarha (Finnish for garden/gardening), as well as helping with everyday house chores. There might be a chance you also get to know their lovely place next to the lake :)

One of the many things I will always be grateful to them for is being just them. In my case, I came to Suomi for a cultural exchange, wanting to learn more about Finland and experience what it is like in everyday life. I could never have imagined how intense the experience would be and, most importantly, how transformative it was.

Kiitos paljon for letting me be part of your life for a few weeks. We will stay in touch, of course, but I just wanted to acknowledge publicly I had a time far beyond my expectations.

I almost forgot about this crucial advice!!! Beware of the dog. That's right, *the* dog, not the dogs. While both Mauno and Mimmi are lovely, Mauno is known for stealing your heart and, before you notice it, ending up sleeping with you every night. You've been warned.
