I lived in Madrid for 9 years where I worked as an English teacher. After moving to the Malaga countryside in 2018 I realised my priority in life is to be in nature. I started working and volunteering on farms and I want more.

I have worked as a gardener and a labourer for a landscaping company. I'm confident with garden maintenance tasks and enjoy it. I have basic construction and DIY skills and these are the areas I'm most interested in improving.

I worked as a gardener so have experience with lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, working up ladders, lugging big sacks of garden waste, driving a van with a trailer. I worked on a large mango plantation, picking fruit, clearing land, planting trees. I have volunteered on farms and smallholdings a number of times, through Wwoof, Workaway and a farmer I met in a bar, so have experience volunteering: Cohabiting, housesitting, working on own initiative, amusing myself. Experience planting, weeding, tending and picking fruit and vegetables. Repotting, planting, and pruning fruit trees. Landscaping. Fencing, feeding livestock, building small dams and emptying a mud filled well.

Well Stefan has many skills and has an atitude of willing to try anything you throw at him. He is good company, energetic and very capable with a wide variety of skills.
While he was on our farm we did building, sheep work and gardening. He was enthusiastic about all of these jobs. We would have him stay again without hesitation.

Philippe picked me up in Carcassonne and I had a warm bedroom to myself with a view to the Pyrenees. I mostly worked with Philippe and saw Valerie at mealtimes. Fui dos veces a la finca de Jack en la primavera de 2022 y después quedé desde Agosto a Febrero 2023. No soy capaz de explicar lo bueno que es el sitio, pero voy a intentarlo. La cabaña que Jack y sus amigos construyeron de barro, madera y otros materiales naturales y reciclados ahora es mi edificio favorito en el mundo. Puedes … read more quedarte en la cama doble viendo el mediteraneo. Si Jack esta en la cabaña, la tienda está bien: tiene tres luces, y se escucha mejor el mar, los pajaritos, los grillos, las ranas… Se siente escondito en la finca de Jack, pero puedes llegar a Playa Caleta- tranquila con ambiente alternativo, en 5 minutos andando, o subir al pueblo en 5 minutos también. La ducha está en medio de plataneros grandes en la parte selva de su finca, con camaleones, ranas y más. Hay una huerta grande con kale, acelga, lechuga, habas y más comida. Más lejos hay un baño seco y una parte con muchos frutales. Andando 15 minutos, con unas vistas preciosas de la costa, llegas al Prado, un centro comunitario en una finca con huerta. Jack es uno de los voluntarios que lleva más tiempo allí. Cada viernes venden frutas y verduras ecológicas de la zona a través de un grupo. Cada dos sábados hay una paella vegana con música en directo, bebidas y una hoguera si hace frío. Conocí mucha gente en el Prado: gente que lleva años viviendo en Maro, gente viajando por la zona y otros voluntarios. Siempre hay verduras y fruta regaladas para los voluntarios en los viernes de y encontré trabajos pagados por la gente que conocí en el Prado. Maro es un lugar único: tierras agrícolas protegidas pegadas al parque natural de los acantilados de Maro, y quién sabe cuánto más va a durar eso, hay un plan para convertir la zona en un campo de golf con un hotel de lujo. Hay varios talleres en el Prado si quieres apuntarte y quieren que la gente proponga nuevos. Había un intercambio de idiomas y un grupo LGBTQ+ recién formados cuando salí qué quieren nuevos miembros. También se puede conocer gente en un ambiente muy guay en los miércoles de Permaflash: trabajando en equipo en la finca de alguien o en el Prado por la mañana y después comiendo juntos. Jack es una de las personas más relajadas qué he conocido en mi vida. Tiene mucha experiencia como anfitrión y siempre fue educado y respetuoso en su comunicación conmigo. En fin, una pasada.

I stayed at Jack's twice in Spring 2022 and was there again from August 2022 until February 2023. I cannot recommend this place highly enough, but I'll give it a go. I have never loved anywhere I have lived more than the cabin Jack and his friends built out of mud, wood and other natural and recycled materials. You can lie in a comfy double bed and look out on the Mediterranean. Alternatively the tent is comfortable, with three built in lights, and is much better for listening to the birds, frogs, crickets, the river and the sea. His land is secluded but a five minute walk takes you to the quiet Playa Caleta, five minutes in the other direction and you're in the village. The shower is in the middle of tall banana trees in the jungle bit of his land, home to chameleons, frogs, birds and more. Then there are large vegetable beds with kale, chard, borridge, broad beans and more to eat. There's an outdoor dry toilet then lots of fruit trees. Fifteen minutes walk along beautiful coastline takes you to the Prado, a community centre and agricultural land where Jack is one of the principal volunteers. Every Friday they sell locally grown organic fruit and veg through their organisation. Every other Sunday there's a vegan paella with live music, drinks and a fire in winter. I got paid work at the paella, I got lots of free fruit and veg when I volunteered at Fridays and I met lots of friendly people, some who have been in Maro for years, some travellers and some volunteers in the area. Through this network of people I got other paid jobs. Maro is a unique hippy heartland, on protected agricultural land, bordering a natural park, which mightn't be protected for much longer- there's a plan to turn the place into a golf course. In the Prado you can join various workshops or propose something you'd like to do yourself, when I left a language exchange group and an LGBTQ+ group were just getting started and we're eager for people to join. Permaflash most Wednesdays is a great opportunity to meet new people, help them doing some work on their land or in the Prado, then have lunch together. Jack is one of the most chilled people I have ever met. He's very used to having volunteers and was always polite and respectful in his communication with me. I think anyone would be lucky to spend time at his place.
