Hola beautiful people, we are Pia and Oskar, a young couple from Germany.

we started our journey in summer 2020 in the beautiful nature of Sweden. For one year we have been volunteering on many different ecological farms and communities. We were able to not only learn about farming but also about ourselves and we grew a lot during that time. Together we are looking for a simple life which is close to nature. We try to create harmony within ourselves and with our surroundings. We both love to connect with people who have the same feeling and enjoy living life together while working on projects such as gardening and building.

That's us:

We both love to spend our time outside in nature. When we are in a city we feel captured and as if a part of our life is missing. Apart from that we enjoy making music, dancing, swimming in lakes, having campfires, cooking healthy food, having deep conversations, playing games... To sum up we are both pretty social and love to live in communities.

After finishing highschool Pia spent three months in Spain and visited a language and surf school. She loves it to learn new languages and have cultural exchanges. Besides she likes to do yoga especially in nature.

Oskar finished school with sixteen and worked as an event technician in a university of art. He enjoys building nearly everything out of wood like animal houses etc.

Now we are heading south, following the sun. We are super happy to meet you and have a lovely time together. See you soon

Thanks to our wonderful hosts we were able to gain a lot of experience and skills. Both of us were engaged in building projects, such as building a sheep and goat fence (including taking down small trees with an axe for the poles) and Oskar also built a polytunnel from scratch. We chopped a lot of firewood with an axe and a splitting machine and Oskar even learned how to use a chainsaw. Moreover we learned how to grow veggies. We both are familiar with the digging and non digging method. And especially Pia learned a lot about planting, sawing and watering. She loves it to spend her time in the garden and do her best so that the plants can grow and give wonderful veggies.
Besides we also took care of children and we love to spend our time with them. Apart from that we took care of chickens, rabbits, cats, dogs and sheep.

we spent 6 weeks with our friend at Raffa's and Simon's beautiful farm.
Oskar was building a goat fence with Simon and our friend, dug new vegetable beds and built a polytunnel. Working together with Simon guarantees a whole lot of fun.

Pia and Oskar were a joy to have stay with us for about four months. They were extremely enthusiastic, and very eager to learn about all the great many things we did and worked with, and about how all those things are connected with each other.

During their stay, they learned to take down trees of up to a 20cm diameter with an axe, and to then… read more process it into either firewood, or into fence posts. Although the first trees may have been quite a challenge to get down correctly, a few days later both of them had become safe workers, able to work alone. After a few more days they were like professionals.

We needed at least 150 fence posts, so it was many days of cutting down, taking off branches, taking off bark, cutting to size, cutting a sharp tip on one end, burning half the pole's exterior to protect against rot, before they could be put in the ground. We produced a 500 meter fence this way, and their work was absolutely essential. On my own I would have been able to do less than a third of that.

The fence was for a grazing area for holistically planned grazing with sheep. Apart from this permanent perimeter fence, we also built semi-permanent and temporary fencing required for the once every two to five day moves. They were very interested in the whys and hows, and now know more about holistically planned grazing than most people who have grazing animals.

Taking care of our animals was a big part of the job. They got involved with our chickens, ducks, rabbits, dog, cats, and especially the sheep. Before the permanent fence was finished, we worked instead with mobile electric net fences, and at that time the sheep needed moving on average once a day. During that time they learned how to estimate how long and how well a given piece of meadow would feed six sheep; how to check for gut fill and condition; how to determine when the right time for a move was; and to actually make them move. Soon enough, the sheep would run after them eagerly to get to a new patch of fresh grass.

During their stay we were also breeding rabbits, and they were very much part of that process as well.

Another big project that they spent many days working on was our vegetable garden. It included maintenance, sowing, transplanting, harvesting, and, most importantly, expanding the growing area by making new beds and paths. We make our own compost using the Berkeley Method, and they know pretty well how to do that too now, so they can make finished compost from fresh raw materials within about a month.

Pia and Oskar helped us with many more projects, big and small, and last but not least, they were fun to have around. They were very social, but never in a too forward way. They respected our privacy, needed their own, and I think we managed to get the balance just right. Whenever things were unclear, or not entirely to their liking, they would communicate about that quite openly, so that we could actually work things out instead of (small) disagreements festering quietly.

They stayed in our very private stuga, hundreds of meters away from the main house. They kept the place very tidy and clean, and left it just as they found it.

We would not hesitate to welcome them back at some point if they would choose to spend more time here.
