Hello people!

We are Petros and Eirini, a couple from Thessaloniki, Greece and we are ready to embark on our first Workaway experience, starting this summer! We are 24 and 23 years old respectively and we are driven by our love and excitement for nature, communal activities, beautiful human connections as well as by diverse landscapes and work experiences. This summer we are seeking the opportunity to collaborate with communities or organizations that may need a pair of extra hands, during the months of July and August, be it in farms, small restaurants, campings or any small project in need of some help.

Through traveling together we have gained enormous appreciation for other local communities and cultures. Both of us have experience of living in small communities, where communal aid is a priority (cooking, cleaning, helping with animals, composting, etc.).

Through our studies (we are both studying Physics--Eirini is an undergraduate student and Petros is doing his Master's degree) we have learnt to appreciate the complexity and diversity of the world around us. Together we love spending time outside, organizing hikes, exercising, practicing yoga, cooking and getting our hands dirty.

We hope our Workaway experiences connect us further with different ways of life. In particular, we would love to observe how people move and act in their everyday lives, their cooking and agricultural habits and how their lives are shaped, depending on their cultural background and local geography. We are eager to learn and spend our time helping the kind strangers that are willing to accept us:).

We are both students in the department of Physics, so we can offer support regarding technical stuff. Aside from that, we are fluent English speakers and we can hold up conversations in French (Eirini) and German (Petros).

We have both worked in summer jobs at restaurants. Specifically, Petros has worked as a cook and Eirini as a waitress. Apart from that, both of us are excited about cooking. Petros is an experienced cook who cares a lot about ingredients and other elements that make cooking a creative and communal task. Also, we are fans of sustainable ways of dealing with ingredients such as fermentation, preserving, etc (we love making sourdough bread:)).

By participating in various international exchanges, we have learnt how to live in small communities and performing tasks that benefit the whole community like cooking, cleaning, composting, animal care and helping in small gardens. We have also improved our understanding of outdoors way of life, like setting up tents, organizing activities for groups, Eirini loves doing yoga and meditation workshops and Petros loves to organize conversations and activities around food and agriculture. We can also deal with conflicts in groups and enhance bonding between group members.

As a last note, we are happy to learn more about creative and DIY projects as well as farming and gardening related activities. We are young and full of energy, we want to learn from you and make beautiful things together!:)

Petros and Eirini stayed with us ONLY for three weeks. We say ONLY because they became such a part of the family (you can ask Lays the cat!) that we all shed tears when they left (again, ask Lays the cat!)

What follows is our review of the tomato heaven, built by dear Gabriel, Helen and all the other beautiful people who helped. What these people are building trully captures the meaning of communal living. Upon arriving you will feel the calmness of the area and marvel at the beauty surrounding it. You will certainly fuel your body with amazing food that comes from the land which you will help to cultivate. This is the place for meaningful work, heartwarming conversations and mindful sharing.We trully feel so much love and appreciation for the place and people there.

During our 3 week stay we experienced, learnt and ate so much! We got involved in many different things in the farm and learnt so many life skills. Our days started at 6 in the morning with a hot coffee and tasty french pastries and then our work began in the field, harvesting humongous zucchini, eggplants, potatoes, cucumbers, and watermelons. We did some weeding and we also helped with the preparations of the ground for the fall planting. We then enjoyed an amazing and huge oatmeal (sorry Gabriel!) , best described as a morning feast. After that, our work continued in the other house that is under renovation works where we painted the walls and ceilings of the spaces that are going to host more volunteers. We certainly had a lot of fun doing that, especially the stairway! Some evenings we let ourselves get lost inside the tomato forest where we helped with their harvest, eventually leaving the greenhouse with 100 kilos of them.

We had a lot of free time that we opted to spend reading books (they have huge towers of books, in many languages for every taste), bonding with Gabriel and the other workawayers and figuring out creative ways to cook, especially with the mountains of tomatoes and zucchini. During the weekends we explored the area around the farm, there are plenty opportunities for that. The nearby lake was beautiful and the hike to get there took us through the magnificent landscape of the area. Other hiking paths led to the nearby villages that were amazing spots for picnics. Grenoble is also 45mins with a train from the farm and we're glad we got to visit it. Helen was also very kind to drive us to a local market where the produce of the farm is being sold as well as Helen's amazing jewellery creations, this visit really showed us what Gabriel and Helen aspire to create, a sustainable community that shares their produce locally.

Now we would like to talk about the ones responsible for this thoughtful environment. To begin with the most significant one, Lays the cat. She truly is the boss of the house, taking care of everyhthing around the farm, hunting mice (not always succesfully), guiding us through our tasks and keeping us company during the night. She really taught Gabriel and Helen how to run a farm. We spent our days with Gabriel, an incredible person that was happy to show and trust us with so many tasks around the farm, providing us explanations about how everything works. He is such an intresting person to talk with, about well... really everything! We really felt safe to express ourselves and our needs. Living with Gabriel is an opportunity for lots of humour, laughing and random knowledge, but also one for warm feelings and getting the essence of what connecting through community really is. Every weekend we had a bright visit from Helen, along with her super tasty jams and her amazing energy. She always made sure that we feel comfortable and we're so excited to interact more with her on our next visit, when she will be permanently there. She also gave us a full exhibition of her amazing jewellery creations, alongside some french cheese and a baguette. In the end she made sure to thank us for our help with a meaninful gift.
