Hello all!
I’m an 18-year-old from Australia trying to travel a bit before starting university, where I plan to study chemical engineering (ATAR 93.85 predicted). Although Australia is a wonderful place, it’s stinking hot, flat, and is where yellow shrubs pass for 'trees'- I’m ready to see what the rest of the world has to offer.

I’m curious, easygoing, and passionate about learning - particularly about languages and cultural exchange. I read a lot and have a keen interest in philosophy and literature, and would be happy to chat about thinkers and writers with you - from Kant, Aristotle, and Dante to Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky, or Jung.

I’m a native English speaker, studied French in school, speak Indonesian at a high-intermediate level, and am currently dabbling in a few Slavic languages. I believe that learning languages is one of the best ways to foster understanding and cross-cultural empathy. The connection through sharing language is one of the things I find most rewarding about life, and I've often found that the best laughs and conversations-are ones where you don't know what's being said!

I’m very active, and as a former national-level swimmer, I’m fit and healthy. I should be able to handle whatever physical tasks you ask of me, and I believe deeply in pushing my limits and learning in an authentic way - whether physically or intellectually.

I was inspired to join Workaway after my first international trip to Rote, Indonesia. I stayed with a local family who spoke almost no English, and the conversations and friendships I built there are among the happiest memories of my life. While I wouldn’t be able to afford travel without the hospitality of hosts -for which I am extremely grateful - ,it’s that desire to foster human connection that truly drives my presence on workaway.

I’ll always be happy to help and am open to learning new skills, and looking forward to meeting you!

-Accademic and well-read- particularly interested in philosophy, literature and languages, or any interesting conversation!

I had a fantastic time at Ider's camp.
The camp is located in the most beautiful spot. On the very edge of Lake Khovsgul, and behind the mountain is a gorgeous backdrop of forest and mountain. The hiking, and the sheer scenery, are naturally gorgeous.

Ider is a friendly and welcoming host, well connected with other locals. His Mongolian staff, additionally, are friendly, funny and will jump to teach you whatever you like about Mongolian culture or the Mongolian language. Should you choose, you will have every ability to ride horses, eat sheep intestine and drink airag to constitute whatever kind of authentic experience you're after.

While I emphasis that this did not effect my enjoyment of the workaway, I have however marked it quite harshly on accuracy. While I was at the camp (just before peak season, in mid June to mid July), there were up to 15 workawayers staying at a time (which creates a nice social atmosphere, but is maybe different to the personal atmosphere some workawayers might be anticipating). We were involved and responsible in some way of essentially every aspect of running the camp- from cleaning and constructing the gers, dish washing, laundry, waiting and so on and so forth. If I recall correctly, the original description mentions only 'carrying luggage', yet this is the only thing that I do not think I did while there.

Additionally, we cooked breakfast for ourselves, and while initially the foodstuff to cook with was provided, we were eventually asked to help pay for breakfast.
Work hours could be extremely variable. There is no organised schedule, and if it is a busy day, I did find myself working a few 8 hour days, unless I purposely organised swapping myself out with other workawayers who might have had less to do that day. If you do not specifically arrange it with Ider, you will not be given days off (I was aware of this when I arrived)- I stress here that Ider is an incredibly easy-going and reasonable guy, who is easy to negotiate with and will happily go out of his way to organise (for instance) a horse trek for you if it's clear you've drawn the short straw a couple days in a row. The chefs, and the few other paid staff (while I was there there was about 5 in total) seem to work practically dawn to dusk.

This was never a problem for me. Like Ider, I am also an easy-going, go-with-the-flow kinda guy, who finds it very easy to play it by ear. The hours never really bothered me because I was accustomed to 70+ hours in my home country, compared to which this was a pittance, and all in all my work was always enjoyable, social and rarely physically demanding. Nonetheless, I can imagine that they are important details for consideration, which is why I have described them here for your reference, and it is my belief that the aspects described here should be listed in the description.

All-in-all, I loved my time staying here, and I made many friends and memories I plan to keep for life. I hope and have every intent to one day return to Lake Khovsgul, and with any luck stay with Ider once again 🙏

Wayve did his volunteer work as a teacher of English language at our school for two weeks. He is a good guy with politeness and respect. In the role as a teacher, he maintain good collaboration with the team and responsibility in his teaching that made students more engaging.
It was a great opportunity for the school that had him as a teacher here.
