Descripción
Hi, we’re Jacob and Sam, a couple from Derbyshire in England.
We’ve been together for just over a year and we’ve decided now is the right time to go travelling together, see more of the world and hopefully meet some great people along the way.
Jacob has actually done Workaway before. A few years ago he set off travelling around Europe and ended up in France after doing a handful of Workaways. What was meant to be travelling turned into him living there for 7 years and eventually starting his own flower farm.
Running the flower farm was probably one of the most informative times of his life and really confirmed that farm life is for him. He loves growing, gardening, flowers, animals and generally being outside and getting stuck into things.
Before that, Jacob also spent some time volunteering at a wildlife rescue in Zanzibar, Tanzania, which was one of the experiences that first gave him the travel bug.
Since moving back to England, he’s been working for a construction company as well as building websites for local businesses. He’s quite practical, enjoys DIY and outdoor work, and is also good with computers and technology.
Sam started his career working as a dementia nurse, which he did for around 5 years. After Covid, he decided he wanted a change and moved into pubs and restaurants, which is something his family have always been involved in. He ended up successfully managing pubs and restaurants before recently giving it up so we could finally go travelling together.
Sam is very sociable, funny, practical and adventurous. He’s also an amazing cook and baker and is happiest when he’s in the kitchen making something. One of the things he wants to do while we’re travelling is learn local recipes from the places we visit and eventually put together a recipe book from the trip.
We’re both quite easy going and outdoorsy. We enjoy gardening, walking, good food, animals and exploring new places. We’re also pretty happy with simple living and don’t mind mud, early mornings or getting our hands dirty.
Most mornings at home we’re already up around 6 or 7 listening to the birds and using the Bird ID app to work out what we can hear, so early starts aren’t really a problem for us.
We’re both happy working together or separately and we’re not expecting every job to be exciting. We know that farms, homes and projects all come with everyday jobs that just need doing.
We’re interested in pretty much every type of Workaway experience including farms, flower farms, animal rescues, homesteads, eco projects, permaculture, vineyards, food projects, hostels, guesthouses, community projects, renovation projects and off-grid places.
Farming is probably the biggest interest for both of us. One day we’d love to have our own flower farm, so we’d really like to learn how other people grow, manage their land and build a life around farming.
Food is also going to be a big part of the trip. Sam would love to learn local dishes and cooking techniques from the people we stay with rather than just eating in restaurants.
We also really enjoy meeting local people and learning about how people actually live. One of the things Jacob loved most about Workaway the first time was getting to know a place properly rather than just passing through it as a tourist, and that’s something we both want from this trip.
Jacob speaks English and French and is starting to learn Italian. Sam speaks English and is also learning Italian, so language exchange would definitely be something we’d enjoy.
At the moment we’re planning to travel for around 3 to 4 months through the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Greece and Turkey, and we’re hoping to make it to Indonesia later in the year.
We’re happy helping with farming, gardening, animals, hospitality, cooking, household jobs, basic DIY and renovation, websites and computer work. We’re also always happy to learn something new and give things a go.
The only things we’d probably avoid are childcare-focused placements or placements where the work is mostly just cleaning.
We’re happy staying somewhere rural or fairly basic and limited Wi-Fi isn’t a problem, although Jacob does need internet from time to time so he can keep on top of his website work.
More than anything, we want to use Workaway to meet people, learn new skills, experience different cultures and hopefully be useful wherever we stay.
We’re both really excited to see where the next few months take us.
