I am an artist and herbalist travelling around southern Europe and Morocco over the next few months before going to India in the new year. I grew up in England and am also Canadian. For the past few years I've been living on Vancouver Island studying herbal medicine, farming and working at a forest school for kids. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty... I love working outside and anything plant-related. I have experience living off-grid, remote, using compost toilets and low maintenance life. It works for me.
I'm interested in learning more about natural building and different ways of construction that are attuned with the local environment and climate. I would also love to learn about different herbal medicine uses, healing traditions and also food. I really enjoy food, especially when it is shared with good conversation :)
I hope to bring a kind, helpful, open-hearted and accepting presence to the places I go. I love to laugh and meet new people.

I spent 3 weeks staying at Hannah and Duncan's , 2 of them working on a particular project off their land and one week on it (during which we built a stone wall. so cool). There were 5-6 of us volunteers throughout which made it extra fun.
This is a true family style workaway, delicious nutritious home cooked food eaten altogether, games after,… read more loads of laughs. There was never a moment I felt unwelcome in their home to warm up, read, chill out. This really stuck out to me as it's no small feat opening your home so generously to so many people. We were immersed in their life in Portugal, met lots of their friends and visited different quintas... it was very fun to experience their community and weekly rituals... like the Sunday market in a nearby town where I had the best roast chicken of my life thankfully more than once.
The dome accommodation is comfortable with lots of blankets. I loved it because it felt very close to being outside, but still sheltered from rain. Some mornings/nights were damp, but that is to be expected in the wet season, staying in a tent-like structure. If you need more blankets or a hot water bottle they are available. Comfy beds :)
Hannah was great at communicating the details of their rural situation so I felt like I knew what I was getting into. No surprises when I got there... just know you'll be bathing in a river, or with a bucket and some hot water, and digging a hole for your toilet time. Don't let this put you off. If it really does then like the listing says it's not the place for you. But by the end you might just be absolutely devasted to hear a toilet flush under your bum.
The tasks were varied, there was lots of opportunity to chat about permaculture and to learn about it from the way they live, their solar power set up, their food forest & other such projects on the land. The land is beautiful and it's easy to explore the surrounding area on lovely walks. A highlight is spending time in little villages/towns that you might otherwise not see just backpacking about.
Oh yes and during our time there two new animals needing homes joined their fam, a piglet and a lamb, this was very cute and fun to experience the barnyard vibes. Most of all it exemplified Hannah and Duncan's warmth as they took these lil babies in when no one else would. Really they are wonderful people and the love and care they show for their community is palpable... do yourself a favour and go help them out for a bit! Ok I'll stop there... lots to say cos overall this was a lovely experience and i miss it!
