Hi! I’m Ellie, 27, from England and have been on the road since graduating uni in 2019 (essentially just avoiding serious adult life!). My first stop was Germany, to improve my language skills, but since then I’ve hopped about all over Europe and beyond, volunteering in many different places – with a focus of animal shelters and sanctuaries.

I’m currently travelling around Australia in a little converted campervan with my boyfriend, Cam (see connected workaway profile) and our dog, Chedz. She’s an easy-going rescue dog who is used to life on the road with us and generally adapts very quickly to new settings around different people and animals.

I find it particularly valuable to work as part of a community amongst like-minded people, but I'm open to everything. I am passionate about living a well-balanced, vegan lifestyle and I'm always keen to learn more from those around me.

Skills-wise I have done a little bit of everything along the way with workaway. Working with animals is where I have most experience and interest, but I’ve also done a big mix of other projects – eg, building mud houses in Bulgaria, au pairing for young kids in an un-schooling family in Germany, working on an organic vegetable farm in Turkey and land management in France. I am quick to adapt to different environments, but I love being outdoors and doing physical work.

I have a Bachelors degree in Microbiology, though I’m yet to use it... For now I’m perfectly content with travelling, and have since become an ambassador and freelance writer for Workaway.

I didn't stay long here so I'd only just settled into the daily life when it was time to leave again - thank you for accommodating me for just a couple of weeks at short notice. I will miss the animals anyway; they don't take long to get to know. The 3 dogs are great fun and the little lambs and their mamas are incredibly affectionate when you… read more take the time to go and sit with them. Bottle feeding the lambs was a really special experience - I've hand reared many young animals before, but never lambs. They can be very loud and demanding at feeding time - they know exactly what they want from you! I was a bit disappointed that there were pigs to work with during the winter; they're my favourite and we can really learn a lot from them. But the stubborn donkeys, noisy sheep and all the other animals made up for it no problem!

If you get chance to walk the dogs it's also great. It definitely helps if you've had experience with big dogs before or are at least familiar and comfortable with them - they're very friendly and cuddly once they've welcomed you in their territory. And little Shanna, the puppy, is going to grow into a beautiful girl for sure, taking all the attention she can get!

In terms of work, there is much to do here, as with any working farm-like environment. Animal care is a daily requirement, of course - but I would suggest this could be a good workaway for you if you have another specific skill or interest that you wish to share. There is often cleaning to do and preparing of the guest house for rentals. But also much outdoor work - from wood chopping and gardening to fence building and DIY construction. If you have a particular skill you will probably feel at home and able to find your own routine more quickly and efficiently. Otherwise you may feel a little lost initially - Eline gives you much independence and appreciates if you use your own intuition to make best use of your working hours there. She is very busy herself and so not always around to provide guidance - though of course if you're ever unsure, just ask. But, for me, a more specific daily routine with better guidance would have suited my working style better and perhaps have been more productive at this time for everybody there.

The location is quite rural, a reasonable little cycle ride away from the nearest town or shop. In the winter this may feel a little isolating if you don't have a car and are travelling alone, though Eline always hosts multiple workawayers at once so you should have company to cook and relax with in your spare time.

Overall a laid back and very open Host from whom you could learn a lot. Ideally though you will visit here during a period with a good group of other workawayers, because this really makes all the difference when it comes to working and living together. Thanks again, Eline and Lucien.
