Hello and thank you for reading my profile.

My name is Charlotte, and I am from London, UK. I am a warm, mature, reliable and capable person looking for a meaningful cultural exchange experience in Spain.
I am a qualified yoga teacher with a growing wellbeing project called Magical Connection, focused on connection, wellbeing, and helping people move through life transitions in a positive and grounded way.

Over the past year, I have been supporting family responsibilities following the passing of my father, and I now have some space in my life to begin a new chapter — one that includes travel, contribution, language learning, and fresh experiences.
This year I have spent time in Lanzarote and Barcelona, and I recently started learning Spanish, which I would love to improve through daily life and immersion with a Spanish-speaking family or household.

In recent months, I have also been bringing some of my wider life experience into practical support work. I completed a foundation course in Systemic Family and Couples Work, which I hope to continue in the future, and I have recently been supporting a London family with light childcare, cooking, and school pick-ups. This arrangement completes at the beginning of June.

I would especially love the opportunity to spend time in Spain or the Canary Islands, to experience island life, practise Spanish, contribute positively, and be part of a warm and welcoming home environment.

I am in very good health, active, energetic and responsible. I enjoy cooking, wellbeing, walking, nature, animals, meaningful conversation, creativity, and helping where needed.

For me, Workaway is not only about accommodation — it is about genuine exchange, learning, connection, and sharing life in a meaningful way.

I left this Workaway unexpectedly on Wednesday 5 August, approximately two weeks earlier than planned. My experience had some real positives: it is a beautiful location, the household was welcoming in many respects, the cooking was wonderful, and I appreciated the opportunity to experience life on the finca and practise my Spanish.

However, … read more ultimately the experience was not right for me, and I feel there are some important things prospective Workawayers should know.

When I arrived, I was told that I would be working alongside another Workawayer. I did not have previous experience picking coffee, so I think what would have worked much better would have been a proper introductory session: understanding my previous experience and abilities, explaining clearly what was expected of me, and giving me appropriate instruction and guidance before I began.

There was a manual left in my bedroom, which I read, but beyond that there wasn’t a proper introduction to the work or a clear conversation about the standards expected. The only way I really came to understand those expectations was through the hosts’ unhappiness with my performance after my first and second days of coffee picking. I found this difficult because I had not been given a clear opportunity at the outset to understand what they were looking for or what would constitute a good day’s work.

As somebody who is also a small business owner, my feeling is that the hosts may have had some disappointing experiences with previous Workawayers, and that it might be helpful to step back and consider whether their needs and expectations are fully aligned with the Workaway model. Hosts need to be very clear about what they actually need from a Workawayer, what standards they expect, and whether hosting Workawayers is genuinely working for everyone in the household.

More importantly, there appeared to be a conflict within the household about having Workawayers. At various points there were derogatory comments about Workawayers, and I had the impression that the two hosts did not have the same attitude towards hosting. I think this is important because a Workawayer is entering somebody else’s home and needs to feel that they are genuinely welcome there.

The situation came to a head on Wednesday 5 August during a conversation in Spanish. Although my Spanish is limited, I understood enough to raise the fact that there had been inappropriate and derogatory discussion about Workawayers at the table. I found this deeply uncomfortable and unprofessional.

During an earlier conversation about my work, I was also told, “This is a Workaway, not a Chillaway,” and that other Workawayers had become very upset in the past. I found the language and manner in which this was communicated concerning, particularly given that there had not been a clear conversation with me at the beginning about the expectations or standards required.

I have to be honest that, by the end of my stay, the environment did not make me feel emotionally safe. I also had no friends or family nearby who I could turn to for support. It is important for hosts to remember that a Workawayer has made the decision to travel to another country and paid to get there in order to have an experience. They may be completely reliant on the host environment while they are there.

In my case, I had come at a significant point in my life, having experienced a major bereavement, and was looking for a positive reset, an opportunity to learn Spanish and to experience something new. When I ultimately felt I could no longer remain, I had to leave at very short notice, arrange alternative accommodation in Santa Cruz for three nights and then travel to Lanzarote for some space and support. This was completely unplanned and had an unexpected financial and practical impact on me.

There were genuinely positive aspects to the experience, and I don’t want to lose sight of those. However, the overall experience did not work for me, and I believe the issues around expectations, communication, the household’s attitude towards Workawayers and the working environment are important for prospective Workawayers to know about.

I would strongly encourage the hosts to consider carefully what they actually need from a Workawayer and whether their current expectations and hosting arrangement are the right fit. Clear communication and a proper introduction to the work at the beginning could have made a significant difference.

I will also be making a formal report to Workaway because I don’t feel that the circumstances of my departure can be adequately addressed through a review alone.

A pesar de poner que hablaba español de principiante, eso no fue posible. La necesidad de hablarle en su idioma, a mi, me resultaba complicado y estresante porque no lo hablo muy bien.
