👋 I’m Andrew. Growing up in an immigrant household, I’ve spent most of my life in a career oriented headspace. After graduating from college, I made my way to San Francisco, where I spent four years working as a software engineer – first with a machine learning company and later with a meditation-focused one.

The pandemic really made me reevaluate my life values and in search of a better work life balance, my wife and I uprooted our lives and moved to Maui, Hawaii. There I found myself spending less hours in front of the computer and more time in nature and connecting with my community. Learning to surf became a passion of mine and a form of meditation.

Seeking a new adventure, my wife and I made a bold decision to sell most of our belongings and quit our jobs. In 2023, we embarked on a seven-month backpacking journey through Southeast Asia – an experience that has truly been the adventure of a lifetime. We've immersed ourselves in diverse cultures, met people from all corners of the globe, and savored flavors that were entirely new to us.

Through our many months of travel, there’s been a lingering question of what kind of life we will build for ourselves after. I’m very interested in learning about alternative means of living, particularly sustainable farming and homesteading. I’m a fast learner, great problem solver, able bodied, and not afraid to get dirty. Cooking is a lifelong passion of mine and would love to have great conversations over a home cooked meal.

Hello! I'm Tracy, a California native and a fourth-generation Japanese-American. My husband Andrew and I lived in Hawaii for two years, which is where I began my career as a pediatric occupational therapist. I worked with babies, children, and teens with special needs in the only outpatient clinic on the island. It was truly such soul fulfilling work to support the families to reach their goals and participate in meaningful occupations.

Andrew and I decided to take a leap of faith to quit our jobs and travel the world. We explored Asia for seven incredible months, changing the way we connect with the world. Through these adventures, I've discovered that travel is about more than breathtaking sights and delicious cuisine (though those are a huge part of what brings me joy). It's the people and the sharing of cultures that make it truly special. Deep connections are cultivated when we're open-hearted and vulnerable.

Our journey led us to Workaway, sparked by a memorable night in Granada, Spain. During a rainstorm, we, along with a Lithuanian guest and our host, shared a heartwarming dinner by the fireplace. We shared our life stories, hopes, and challenges. The next day, we saw the aftermath of the storm which ripped down the host’s plants and trees. We united to clean up after the storm, reaffirming our path to work with our hands, learn new skills, and build connections.

Nature is my passion. You'll find me hiking among towering trees, leaping off waterfalls, grounding myself through yoga, tending gardens, and surfing glassy waves while striving to create a sustainable, balanced life. Let's create meaningful connections and unforgettable experiences together! 🌍🌱🌊

    Andrew,
Being a software engineer for the last 5 years, I’m extremely comfortable on the computer. I worked mostly on backend systems in JavaScript and worked on databases. My skills I’ve developed in the job makes me confident that I can learn any technologies that are needed for a project.

On a whim one weekend, I took completely took apart a leaky toilet and found and replaced a washer that had fallen apart. Whatever I don’t know how to do, I’m able to figure it out with some research online or a YouTube video.

I taught myself how to surf but I also taught myself how to fix surfboards. I found a free old, beat up surfboard and practice the process of repairing it. It looked pretty bad at first but I’ve now become competent at it. I showed my most recent repair job to a professional and she asked if I wanted a job at her workshop.

In July, we spent some time in Southern California with our families. We really enjoyed spending our afternoon helping Tracy’s dad prune his 25ft persimmon tree. Another day that was less fun was spent cleaning, disinfecting and repairing my Mom’s shed which had become infested with rats.

    Tracy,
Helping others has always been a passion of mine and I’m so grateful to have found a career in Occupational therapy that allows me to help those in need. To become licensed, I endured 6 years of higher education, earning my bachelors and doctorates degree.

When I moved to college, I received an old dresser from my family that had seen better days. One day at a thrift store I saw a cute set of dresser handles that inspired me to refurbish the dresser. I researched and spent an afternoon sanding and painting the dresser before adding on the new hardware. It’s brought me joy for many more years.

My parents have a huge garden and I always loved all the plants there. So when I had my own space, I filled it with house plants. It was always so rewarding to see they grow and be happy in my care. Some succulents were growing so fast I had to separate them into multiple pots. I was able to sell these succulents to other plant enthusiasts.

In my parent’s garden, there is a grapefruit tree that is constantly providing fruit. There’s so much fruit on it! Every time I am home, I harvest at least 25 kilos and hand juice them all. The fresh juice is delicious, and I love to give out bottles to my friends and family.
