Hey, I'm Mel!

I've been living in Guadeloupe this past year, teaching English as a language assistant, and (very slowly) finishing up my masters' thesis in French lit. I'm planning to renew my contract for next year, to spend another year teaching in Guadeloupe, so that gives me a whole giant summer to travel and explore around the Caribbean and (hopefully!) South or Central America, which I'm really looking forward to!

As far as I go, aside from reading and school, I love travelling, hiking, swimming, sailing, cycling, art, music, language, culture, and dance, amongst other things. I'm pretty happy, and easy going, wherever I go, and am just as happy backpacking as I am at the opera. I've been

Having set off on my first long solo traveling summer at 17, I've been using a combination of workaway, helpx, wwoofing and Couchsurfing for years, and have had some really amazing and unexpected experiences, and am very excited to set off on some more! Although my background is mainly in academics, I'm always happy to try my hand at any odd job, and in the past have enjoyed gardening, painting, light construction, working with horses, organizing, farm and domestic animal care, and cleaning, amongst other things. Additionally, I've also worked in the service industry, as a server, receptionist, at a hostel, as a barista, bartender, and hostess. Likewise, I've a pretty strong background in childcare and tutoring/teaching.

This summer, I'm really hoping to have a few different experiences. I'd love to spend some time a bit off the beaten track, in an out of the way and natural place, working with animals or land, but I'd also really like to spend some time around other people and travelers, hopefully at a surf school or camp, as surfing is a skill I've been dying to have the chance to really focus and work on for years! (I'm also hoping I might get the chance to work a bit on a boat as well, and hopefully learn a bit more about sailing!)
