Descripción
We are an agroecological project building a self-sufficient, multicultural community in Southern Spain. After the project changing hands very recently, we are now building upon more than 3 decades of work by the preceding guardians of this beautiful land, who laid the foundation for our project by promoting sustainable living, olive orchard, organic farming, and bioconstruction - enabling us to expand it today into creating a self-sufficient, multicultural community.
We're currently taking the first steps towards this vision of bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and walks of life to build a caring community based on real connections and authenticity. We want to create an environment where people can live in harmony with nature and each other, with permaculture and natural building techniques.
Located just a 10-minute drive (or 30-min walk) from the cosmopolitan town of Orgiva (known as the “Capital of the Alpujarra”), the farm sits in a beautiful and peaceful valley nestled in The Alpujarra mountains, crossed by a river which irrigates the centenary olive trees. The land is approximately 3 hectares in size, with many other fruit trees, vegetable gardens, and having already 4 simple, self-built homes on it - as well as a large yurt which we can use to host retreats, workshops and other events. All is completely off-grid (solar power, compost toilets, etc). The closest village, Bayacas, is a 10-minute walk from the farm. Both Orgiva and Bayacas offer lots of opportunities to get involved in workshops, volunteer days, community events and fiestas outside of the farm.
We are at the early stage of planning the work for the upcoming months, which will involve farming, construction work, team building, and art. If you have experience/skills in any of these fields (or even if not but you´d like to help build this project), we´d love to hear from you!

Spanish and English is mainly spoken here. You could learn about very low impact living, there are several examples of eco building and reed bed systems, compost toilets, solar cookers, etc. We also have animals (chickens, cats).
We can also teach you about olive farming .
We are close to a lively market town with a large range of cultural activities.

Volunteers help 4.5 hrs per day, 5 days per week, weekends off, in exchange for full bed and board ( meals are self catering but all food for making them.is provided) and sharing this unique piece of nature and way of life. Help is mainly physical .

Alojamiento
In 4 individual small stone and strawbale houses,in the depths of nature,all with separate cooking facilities, compost toilets, solar power and shared solar hot water showering facilities. Suitable for couples, friends or individuals.
We do not ask volunteers to share accommodation, we consider it important that everyone has their own space.
Volunteers are expected to keep the house they stay in clean and leave it as they found it when their stay finishes.

We give priority to volunteers arriving by the most sustainable means of transport (bike, bus, train....)
There are bus connections to Granada and Motril via Orgiva.
The Alpujarras is a beautiful area below Sierra Nevada national park.
We ask people not to smoke in the houses or while working.
We cannot accept volunteers with drug or alcohol habits.
If you have any mental or physical health issues please let us know so we can assess if this is the right place for you (including allergies, special dietary requirements etc.)
There are lots of other organic farms in the area which take volunteers and the area is perfect for hiking in Sierra Nevada.
We are also 45 mins from the beach although public transport is limited.
Orgiva has a lively international community and there are mainly workshops,classes and courses on offer.
Bayacas also has an active neighbourhood association and regularly organise fiestas and volunteer work days to tidy up the village which are good opportunities to meet the locals .
In the summer the outdoor swimming pool is open and the local council organizes cultural events like flamenco concerts and outdoor cinema screenings.

Kate's property is beautiful. From anywhere your standing you get a view of the surrounding mountains. After I learned that many of the olive trees are hundreds of years old and that the terraces and water systems were designed by the Arabs when they controlled the area, the job of watering the olive trees took on a marvelous quality.
