Quetzaltenango "Xela" is well-known for it's plethora of Spanish language schools, university students and a rich history. Surrounded by mountains and the active Santa Maria volcano, Xela is a perfect base to visit nearby Mayan villages, natural hot springs as well as hike some spectacular volcanoes. Volunteers will have plenty of interaction with local Guatemalans, including the owners and staff who will share an inside look at Guatemalan culture and traditions. Our staff is made of or 3 or 4 local Guatemalans all of whom enjoy meeting new people and sharing their knowledge about Guatemalan culture and especially Quetzaltenango. Some volunteers like to study Spanish, we can help you get set up at one of the local Spanish school or help you find a private instructor to come to the hostel for lessons. Volunteers will have the opportunity to practice newly learned Spanish language skills with the owners, staff and hostel guests.
Standard responsibilities are guest-orientated such as checking guests in-and-out; providing information; answering the phone and front door; solving problems; help keep the hostel friendly and inviting to arriving guest. Volunteers will have 2 days a week to explore Xela, hike volcanoes, visit nearby Mayan villages, take Spanish lessons...etc.
