We are on 10 secluded acres surrounded by hiking trails from here to town and up into the mountains. We are a short bus ride to beautiful Shuswap Lake and beach, and within 45min-an hour walking distance to amenities and town or, a $2 bus ride. We are also close to the gym, bowling, golf courses as well as a disc golf park. The town always has music somewhere from jams, to open mics, karaoke, concerts and other music festivities.

If you love to be nestled in nature, enjoy a quiet and peaceful space this might be a place for you....helpers stay in a separate self-contained suite. Our cosy campfire pit nestled in the trees, is perfect for evening enjoyment and wiener roasts, providing it is not fire-season.... OR, right from our back yard, take a full moon walk through a short forest trail and onto the 18 hole golf course!

We have a family sized garden - 1,000 sq ft, a small greenhouse and about 300 dahlias, and plant around 80 sunflowers, along with other flowers and hanging baskets.
There is a separate garage/workshop building with an attached 2 bedroom - but unfinished - home that needs the toilet and sink installed, and drywall finished up before it is a liveable space.... maybe one day!

    HELPING
What do you LOVE to do?.. Garden? Help around home? Yard clean-up ? Paint? General maintenance? repairs? Do-it-yourself projects? Organize inside and outdoors? We have it all.
Or,... do you have specialty skills you would prefer to do - we have a variety of tasks so if you have something
you specialize in, and would like to share, please let us know?
So much to do outside this time of year!
We are planning on listing the place for sale in the future so if you have something you would like to do that could contribute to sprucing up the place, it would be much appreciated.

We have been hosting travelers since 1995 ( on and off ) and are so appreciative of the many self-motivated, independent workawayers helping us. It has been a fun ride! We have created many life-long friends.

    LEARNING
Depending on the season, you could also be learning about companion planting, organic vegetable and flower gardening, seed-saving, how to hold and organize a garage sale or.... perhaps during your off time, you might want to learn how to forge for medicinal herbs, make tinctures, teas, and soap OR... time permitting, I'd happy to take some time to teach you how to can, make jam, or bread. I once had a Japanese worker I taught how to make bread and upon returning home, she worked in a bakery and eventually opened her own!

    YOUR LIVING SPACE
Your room is located on the lower-ground-level of the house. You have your own private entrance, bathroom and driveway. (we are upstairs). It is a complete self-contained suite downstairs (approx 1200 sq.ft) so you will have access to a full kitchen to prepare your meals also a living room, dining room AND piano.
Laundry facilities are downtown. There are two and half bedrooms and two bathrooms in the suite therefore, you may be sharing the kitchen with another helper or house guest.
Sadly, due to allergies, we cannot have pets, sorry.

    WHAT TO DO
Salmon Arm has been referred to as the music capital of BC. Throughout winter months until summer, there are weekly open mic/coffee houses in nearby communities, Jazz nights, monthly concerts, and more.
During the summer months, each Wednesday helpers enjoy hiking to the lakeside to enjoy music and dancing on the grass, there are also downtown outdoor afternoon concerts, as well as artisan and farmers markets,

There are lovely walking trails all the way into town - about 45-60 min stroll. We are next to Little Mountain Park with beautiful forested trails for easy hiking. To the top, is a 15-20 min easy walk with views of all of Salmon Arm and Shuswap Lake. Chance are, you won't get to walk all the trails Salmon Arm has to offer, - there are so many. Search Shuswap Trail Alliance for maps of trails in the area.

See below under 'What Else' a variety of things to do and see in the area during your time off.

Please bring your own work gloves, sun hats, sunscreen, and bug repellant

Excited to hear all about you. The more we know, the better we can sort out tasks that suit you.
Feel free, if you want...... don't feel obligated.....to answer the questions below as it will help us to learn a little about you - The more we know about you, the better we can customize your experiences here both helping and how you like to spend your free time.

    ** What are your hobbies?
** What part of our description sounds enticing to you?

** In what tasks, or skills, do you feel experienced and confident doing independently?
** What projects have you accomplished on your own with respect to building and types of tools you have
experience with - the more detail the better.

** How would you like to spend your days off?
    ** Do you smoke?

Feel free, only if you want.... to share whether you have any medical conditions you feel important for us to know - including allergies or food sensitivities.

** Do you prefer to do early mornings, or later in the afternoon till evening?

** Is this your first Workaway experience?

Some helpers come to learn about gardening and homesteading.
Some helpers come for a free place to stay while exploring, working online, or looking for off-site jobs.
Some helpers come to share their skills and expertise,
Some come to improve their language skills,
Some come to 'get some alone time' or meet locals.
We are curious as to what your reason for being a Workawayer is....as knowing this will help us to enhance your experience .

Each season, as the weather changes, brings a whole set of new projects .

    Springtime will be busy!
A little bit of everything gardening, fixing, cleaning, repairing, building, organizing, prepping for garage sale.

    GARDENING
Gardening in both the vegetable garden and planting flowers. Seeding, transplanting, digging, mulching, building support systems for tomatoes etc, Mowing grass, yard clean up - always something to do!

If you have some creative ideas you would like to suggest for our gardens, we would love to hear.
Once veggies and greens are ready there will be dehydrating, maybe some canning, and collecting of various wild medicinal plants and weeds such as pine needle tips, dandelions, burdock, plantain, comfrey, mullein and more.

    OTHER TASKS
Fixing, cleaning, repairing, organizing...., if you have skills that would help us to improve the house and property, - anywhere from A to Z....please let us know. Lots to do for those interested in do-it-yourself projects, repairs, painting, cleaning, organizing, sorting and downsizing.

We like to show you around, and talk about all tasks necessary and prioritized then....discuss what skills you have and would like to share. There is quite a variety of things that need tending to.

There is some painting and sanding in the garage that needs doing, some drywall or panelling to go up in the spring, etc. Not top priority, but if these things interest you, then we can discuss further.

Handymen that are keen to use their skills must be capable of independently taking on projects they are capable of doing on their own. Please share details of what you are confident in doing on your own and we will do our best to accommodate.

We need some dedicated people that love to do a variety of work - especially those that love to be surrounded by nature, and are easy-going, self-motivated, and don't spend their working time on their phones - lol - it is a truth! We are happy to accommodate 'phone' breaks if needed.

As far as 'other work' that you may prefer to do.......Simply let us know what you love to do and are confident doing on your own -so we can make sure we have tasks for you to do while here.
Having experience is important, so please mention the jobs you wish to tackle and the experience you have in this area. Tell us what you have done 100% on your own - we say this as many hope to come to learn carpentry, or plumbing and other skills and unfortunately those types of skills are not skills we are able to teach.

Do you have creative skills - if so, please share what you love to do. what have you built?

Your room is located in our guest suite on the lower-ground-level of the house, with it's own entrance. - and driveway..... (we are upstairs) .

Your space is a complete self-contained 1200 square foot suite with large living room, dining room and a kitchen that has all the dishes and appliances you will need to prepare your meals. For those interested, there is also a piano you are welcome to play.
It is a spacious and cool space to relax after your work day outside in the heat.
There are three separate bedrooms and two bathrooms, therefore, you may also be sharing this space with other helpers or a house guest. Laundry facilities are downtown.

Over the years, we have found that many love to have the freedom to prepare their own meals. This opportunity also adds to the uniqueness of your stay here. Many seem to really enjoy this time to themselves after a days work. This seems especially true for those seasoned travellers that have spent much of their time dining with host families. They welcome the change of pace and to prepare foods they prefer and long for. We do supply a variety of basic foods for each of your meals but, you will most likely want to purchase your own specialty foods, snacks, dairy products, preferred beverages, and meat as those are not supplied. Time permitting, I will often put together a large pot of soup, a salad or casserole for you to enjoy. All depends on my work schedule.

Bring slippers as shoes are not permitted in the house. We ask that everyone clean up after themselves and keep the areas they are using, and living in, clean and tidy. Just as you would need to do your own housework in your own home, same is required here. This includes weekly cleaning of your space....sweeping, mopping, cleaning of bathroom toilet, sink, shower or tub, fridge and stove on your own time. It is really to be fair to everyone. After each meal, you need to wash, dry, AND put away all your dishes, wipe the countertops and stove. The kitchen must be kept clean and tidy at all times. Don't leave it till later on as the kitchen may be needed by others (or myself) therefore, it is important to keep it clean. This will be obvious to many, and is a reminder to others...When you arrive your living space will be clean, and before you leave, it is only fair you leave the space as clean as it was when you arrived. The occasional helper will not do as thorough of a cleaning job before they leave and unfortunately, if this is the case when you arrive, your first day of work here may be to clean the suite.. .. and then.....in this case, that day of cleaning will definately be counted as your first day of work hours as you are cleaning up after a previous worker and not yourself.
