We are on 10 secluded country acres, yet close to everything - 5 min drive to downtown, 3 min.drive to amenities, All within walking distance 45 min to an hour depending on your pace. Quick drive (7min.) or $2 bus ride to town, we are surrounded by hiking trails and farmland. We do not have farm animals, just a cat and therefore cannot accept helpers with pets as we would lose ours and won't take the risk.

We are only a 15 min drive to some of Canada's best cross-country ski and snowshoeing trails. There is a bus from Salmon Arm to Silverstar mountain (about 45 - 60 min away) with great skiing, lovely small little party town, outdoor skating, etc etc. Here is salmon arm when the lake freezes over, many will cross-country ski on it, ice fish, or skate - there are rental places in town for equipment.

    Would currently welcome either:
    a) those with experience with firewood - what can you do on your own?
    b) handyman skills that you are 100% confident in doing on your own.
    d) enjoy cuddling a kitty - no other pets on property, no pets pls.
    e) organizing, cleaning, yard work, preparing for upcoming gardening year
    f) PLEASE let us know your do-it-yourself skills as we have lots of little
jobs, depending on your skill level.
    g) We have a variety of projects from building, renos, etc etc so if anything in particular specifically interests you, please let us know.

Helpers need to be independent, self-motivated helpers and ok to work on their own, looking for a quiet relaxing place to stay.

Let us know your passions/skills as your unique skills may just be a perfect fit
for a special project we have not mentioned ... as.... there are too many projects to list here.
Some tasks indoors, and some outdoors

    Please come prepared ~

    - warm clothes as winter can be cold
    - winter boots and warm outdoor clothing important
    - when temperatures drop, having warm slippers inside is good
    - Your own work gloves
    - A water bottle

We have been hosting travelers since 1995 ( on and off ) and are so appreciative of the many self-motivated, independent workawayers helping us. It has been a fun ride!

Salmon Arm sits on the edge of Shuswap Lake, surrounded by mountains, with endless hiking and biking trails.
We are in the country yet a 5 min drive from town, or 40 min. (up to 1 hour) walk, and a 20 min.bus ride due to the stops along the way.

Also, closer and within walking distance to groceries (Askews uptown), pub (Setters), gym, hot tub and indoor pool at SASCU Recreation Centre, Home Restaurant, Tim Hortons in about 30 - 40 min. walk.

We are on the city bus route so getting to town or more and more hiking trails - is very easy - you can look up the schedule by searching Salmon Arm transit
'e-bus' will bring you to Salmon Arm from the B.C. Coast, Alberta, or airports - check out e-bus online.

There are lovely walking trails all the way into town. We are next to Little Mountain Park with beautiful forested trails for easy hiking. The top, is a 10 min walk, very easy, with views of all of Salmon Arm as well as the vastness of Shuswap Lake. Chances are, you won't get to walk all the trails Salmon Arm has to offer, - so many. Search Shuswap Trail Alliance for maps.

See below under 'What Else' things to do and see in the area, and what to do on your time off.

Your room is located on the lower-ground-level of the house, own private entrance, and driveway. (we are upstairs). There is a complete self-contained suite downstairs (approx 1200 sq.ft) so you will have access to a full kitchen to prepare your meals also a living room, bathroom, and dining room. In the winter months it can be a bit chilly and warm slippers and a sweater will do just fine. If you like to sit around during the day, then you will get chilly - if you move, go in and out, love to explore and do not enjoy sitting around, you will be fine.

If you like quiet time, to be close to nature, this is the spot. There are 2.5 bedrooms downstairs and 2 bathrooms. If there are others here at the same time, you will share the kitchen, living room and dining room.

Feel free, if you want...... to answer the questions below as it will help us to learn a little about you - The more we know about you, the better we can customize your experiences here both helping and how you like to spend your free.

There is a piano in your suite, for those musically inclined, lots of easy walking trails as challenging hiking trails. We are within walking distance to the gym, pool, ice arena, golf course, and town.

We are close to a free - disc golf park where many of our helpers go to meet others both in the summer and winter so pick up a disc for disc golfing before you come.

Check below for all the fun activities around town.

Salmon Arm is halfway between Vancouver and Calgary and a little more than an hour from Kamloops, Revelstoke, and Kelowna.

Be patient, if I don't get back to you right away.....some days you will get a quick response, other days it may take up to a week.

    Winter months and sports!
Within 15 minutes are some of the best cross-country hills in Canada at Larch Hills. An inexpensive rental place is part way up the hill and rents full cross-country ski equipment and snowshoes, called John's Ski Shack.

Salmon Arm often has bus service to other ski hills, usually SilverStar, you can always ask at Skookum Ski & Cycle shop how to get more info.

    - We are 1 hr from Silverstar Mountain and Revelstoke - best of both ski-mountain-worlds but Silverstar offers more.. not only boarding, downhill, cross-country, but also mega tobogganing runs with lifts, outdoor skating, 3 + pubs, restaurants, sweet colorful lively little quaint town. They also have horse drawn sled tours to an evening dinner or fire, but a bit on the pricey side. Also, they rent ski-doos etc.

Silverstar mountain also has night skiing on Friday's after 3pm, and I believe everything is somewhere between $5 and $15- lifts, skiis, food etc.

The past bus from downtown Salmon Arm that leaves early in the morning to Silverstar mountain and returns early evening.

We have many projects on the go, so let us know your skills and we will most likely have a task for you!

Would love to have someone eager to continue organize a garage sale with us (get ready now for the spring!)

Lots of handyman projects here .... a few things to consider......

Please let us know if these tasks work for you
Are you a 'handyman' capable of independently taking on do-it-yourself projects?
Do you love to organize, clean, do household books?
Do you have gardening experience? (none to do come end of Nov till
Spring as it is usually under the snow or frozen ground)
Can you do any tiling? Can you build anything?

Handyman help: - needs to be confident doing tasks on their own.
~ repairing around home and garage
~ creative building of an additional shower (tiling or ?) to accommodate more future workawayers?

~IF you have carpentry skills and would like to use them, just ask - open for discussion based on what we have to do
and what experience you have, and if you are able to work independently.
~ contemplating creating a cabin on property using the trees on property and collection of construction materials. Neighbour is milling wood for us

You will cook your own meals. We have found that many love to have the freedom to do their own thing.

    What to do around town:

There is a bus service in town, and the local bus stop is a 5 min. walk from the house. I think about $2

You can also walk to town along the backroads or take the trails through the woods all the way to town...it is about 40 minute walk - all down hill, so you might want to take a bus back up!

Closer than walking to town is a large grocery store, local pub, HOME restaurant, 24 hour gym indoor swimming pool/hot tub/steam room (exercise room included) and shooting range.

Do a couple of searches on your computer for:

Search - Shuswap Trail Alliance - as it has a website with maps of many
    surrounding trails and group activities.
Search - Shuswap Lady Striders, if you would like to hook up with other
ladies for decent hiking in the forests as well as casual
walking so not on your own.
Search - Friday a.m. newspaper as it will list all the events here and
surrounding small communities! Local news that will give you
a good sense as to all the interesting events a whole page of
    community events.

Tuesdays the movie theatres will cost you only $5- We have the Salmar Classic on Alexander St. and then the Salmar Grand with 4 movie theatres. Website includes trailers.

Thursdays ~ Jazz nights - free (by donation) amazing concerts that are every 2nd Thursday,
Karaoke here in Salmon Arm at local pub, Crown & Anchor also at:
Grindrod's Riverside Pub Thursday nights, which also has free darts and pool and is along the river.

If you have a vehicle every Saturday evening at the numerous little surrounding communities there are Coffee Houses, where local and visiting musicians get up and play their stuff. Have had musicians that come through town and join in - you just sign up to get on the list when you arrive - I hear some pretty significant jam sessions are held privately after the audience leaves.

The Night Cafe ~ is a fun little cafe/art studio/ food & pizza place that attracts artists and musicians. Go for coffee/drinks/meet locals or, book an painting lesson. Food offered are mini pizza's, kale Caesar salad, brisket and more plus crepes and desserts too. Art Studio is called Meikle Studio if you want to sign up for an art lesson.

Art Gallery - first Friday of the month has an open house where they introduce the artist of the month and offer snacks and drinks, sometimes a small little sing-along happens around the grand piano afterwards.

    There are 4 pubs -
Barley Brew Pub, Crown & Anchor, Setters Pub, and Don Cherry's bar, a Legion, lots of restaurants- Mexican, Thai, East Indian, Chinese and lots more..

Movies: We have the Salmar Grand theatre with 4 different movie
offerings and Tuesday night all tickets are $5 to get in
2nd Theatre is called the Salmar Classic, so don't mix them up as they are 2 different locations. This theatre presents many international Films so you may find one in your home language. Film Festivals held 3 xs per year. Banff Film Festival (always sells out, 2 nights each night different films - quite the party) and the the regular Film Festival in February and Nov.

Live Theatre at the Shuswap Theatre - right across from the Salmar Grand theatres.

Song Sparrow Hall has GREAT band and a monthly dance party.

    other Activities:

    Bowling Alley,
    Gun Club
    Markets and Craft Sales
    Casino
    shopping malls
    Gyms
Indoor pool, hot tub and gym all in one very reasonable price at the SASCU recreation Centre, and yup can walk there.

Salmon Arm is within a 15 – 25 min drive to approx. 6 other small communities to explore with beaches, rivers, waterfalls, skiing and hiking trails. Pretty central here.

Close to lots of activities, on bus route, and bike available.

If you have a car then exploring is endless.

Sicamous, Grindrod, Enderby, Blind Bay, Sorrento, are all smaller towns than Salmon Arm and
    within a 15 - 30 min. drive.

If you have a vehicle, there is so much to explore in the mountains as well as surrounding small communities.
Sorrento, Blind Bay, Sicamous, Enderby, Armstrong ( 20-30 min away)
    Vernon (40 min)
Revelstoke, Kelowna, Lumby, Westbank, Chase, Kamloops, Falkland (45 min-1hour)

We are 1/2 way between Banff and Vancouver and those travelling between these two places will most likely pass through Salmon Arm.

    Reiterating....in summary :
Salmon Arm sits on the edge of Shuswap Lake, surrounded by mountains, with endless hiking and biking trails. We are in the country yet a 5 min drive from town, or 40 min. walk.
