We have a family owned farm. But our two children have grown and left home.
We raise sheep for wool and meat, and Angus cattle for meat.
WE DO NOT REQUIRE FARM LABOUR but we are very busy and appreciate volunteers that want to get involved and help. We enjoy sharing and teaching volunteers about life on a farm.
The main tasks will be helping with chickens, garden, household chores , cooking, baking and some help with dogs. There are plenty of opportunities to do some baking and cooking or learning to bake, if you are interested in that.
I also have small dogs and there are occasionally puppies to enjoy. Workawayers must like dogs particularly small dogs.
We have a team of working sheep dogs as well. Previous overseas helpers have enjoyed watching the sheep dogs work, and going out on farm to experience what is involved in raising sheep. But this is not a daily thing and just occasionally for the experience.
The nearest bus station is 45 minutes from our farm. But I can pick up Workawayer from the bus in Oamaru if needed.
A vehicle is needed if you wish to explore the area. But not necessary if you wish to just stay on the farm for your stay.
I prefer female helpers as I like the company at home when my husband is away on the farm for long hours.
Autumn is busy with tidying up the garden before winter, cooking with pumpkins grown, and puppies due.

Workawayers will experience life on a sheep farm in New Zealand and see how we care for our animals and land. We also teach about growing, harvesting and cooking food. We treat workawayers like part of the family and make them feel very welcome to take part in family get togethers like Friday night burgers.

I like help with my daily routine of caring for chickens, dogs, cooking and gardening. There will be opportunities to go out on the farm to see the farm activities but it is not daily and varies depending on the time of year.

There are many local attractions, nice climate and I can pick up volunteers from bus stop in Oamaru if they don't have a car. It is very peaceful and quiet where we are with beautiful scenery. Oamaru is 40 minutes away with historical buildings and penguin viewing. Mt Cook is an hour and a half away. Alps to Ocean cycle trail is near by. Although workawayers need their own car if they wish to travel to these destinations.
