Descripción
I live in an earthen house with a dog in a small village. I am a female in my mid 40's. I teach Korean to immigrants and also teach English to local children. I am into appropriate technology, simple living, permaculture etc. The house has a few appropriate technology such as solar air heating, solar dryer, wood burning floor heating etc. It is located near Haeinsa temple, 3.5 hrs South of Seoul. Ummm...what else?!

I can show you how to cook simple Korean food if you like. If you need somewhere quiet, it might be suitable place to you. There are many trails to go for a walk.

I have a small vegetable garden. Spring, Summer and Autumn time, there's help needed in the garden including planting and weeding. When the weather gets colder, there's less need for gardening so probably more like general maintenance and cooking & cleaning around the house.

Alojamiento
I live downstairs and you would stay upstairs. Upstairs has two bedrooms ( no beds, Asian style mattress) and a spacious living room. There are a bathroom and a kitchen. The kitchen is simple so good for breakfast. Lunch and dinner are provided downstairs.

Haeinsa temple is 20 mins away from my house. It is one of the famous temples in Korea. I live close to mountains. It takes 3.5 hrs from Seoul and 1 hr from Daegu, the third biggest city in Korea.

Staying with Hwayoung for over a month was a most welcome and unexpected experience. After months of communicating in pidgin English, meeting a Korean person with whom one can have not just normal, but also deep conversations, was such a relief and such a treat. I did end up chatting way too much though…after months of rather defective… read more communication with Korean people . Hwayoung is an extremely creative, free-spirited and very well-travelled person. Being so above average travelled contributed to her holding a much broader perspective and understanding of not just foreign people, but human beings in general, in comparison to the often confining ‘typically monoculture Korean’ perspective one may be unfortunate to come across in this country, especially away from the capital. On a practical level, Hwayoung is very well versed in organic gardening and a variety of eco-projects. She has built her own house, which is an amazing feat in itself. The feeling of the house is so harmonious, spacious and warm. The first floor, with walls of earth, maintains a perfect cool temperature in summer (hardly any need for air conditioning), while the second floor, a beautiful space made out of wood, gives one the impression of being in a Norwegian or a Swiss mountain chalet. The view from the house is amazing. A spacious opening towards an old wide vulcanic crater. The nature is lush and only 30 minutes by bus there’s Gaya San National Park, with beautiful verging on magic forests, majestic peaks, loud mountain streams and great hiking tracks. The work consisted of a balanced blend of gardening, cleaning or cooking and contributing to the English classes Hwayoung is teaching to a bunch of very sweet and talented children and teenagers. Experienced in community life, Hwayoung is great company, easy going and flexible. I couldn’t always appreciate company, as the more introverted type of being I am, and especially after having spent too much time in Korea (due to COVID-19 closed borders). I will always cherish the time I spent there, as a true window of freshness and inspiration. Hwayoung also has amazing friends and she’s very generous in letting her workawayers meeting her friends. Last but not least, as Hwayoung has been a workawayer herself, she understands this role very well, and she’s going to great lengths to making her workawayers feel comfortable and well taken care of. From impecably clean bedsheets and towels, to cooking yummy and comforting food. She’s careful with trying to guess what are your favorite foods and she’ll try cooking or getting them for you! Quite touching! Maybe the most inspiring quality Hwayoung has is a spacious, generous tolerance that allows one to be oneself in her presence and in her lovely home. All in all, it’s been a great experience for which I am deeply grateful. THANK YOU!

We stayed at Hwayoung's place for about 2 weeks over the holidays. We had a great time helping cut firewood and enjoying delicious food together. It was also fun helping out with her English classes and getting to know the students. Her dog is really cute too.
