We’re so excited that you’re considering joining us for a Workaway adventure at our waterfront home. But Workaway isn’t just about helping, it’s about learning, sharing, and growing together. If you’re keen on learning how to bake, picking up a few herbal remedy tips, or simply enjoying rural living, we’d love to have you join us.
Our home is nestled on a beautiful 5.5-acre waterfront property, perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, canoeing, or fishing, you’ll find plenty to do. Just bring your gear, and you’re good to go. You’ll have your own cozy room in our single-floor house, where we live with our four beloved pets: Jigger, Polly, Bella, and Lucia. and our new foster puppy Barbarity
A Few Things to Know
We’re a retired couple living on limited resources, but we provide most of the food you’ll need during your stay. That said, some snacks like chips aren’t allowed in the house due to medical reasons. Also, to keep things neat and critter-free, we ask that all meals be enjoyed in the kitchen or living room. No eating in the bedroom, please.
We don’t run on a strict clock, but we do follow a routine to keep things healthy and happy. The house should be up and active by 9 AM and winding down by 10 PM, which we believe is great for both the brain and physical well-being. It’s a simple rhythm that makes the days productive and the nights restful.
What You’ll Be Helping With
We’d love your help with general household upkeep and outdoor tasks. Maria is in a wheelchair but very independent, and Carl is an energetic senior who enjoys outdoor projects. He mostly works on his own but appreciates having someone around to lend a hand and keep him company. You’ll also have the chance to learn about senior living and experience how even small things, like friendly reminders, can make a big difference.
We’ve got a few ongoing projects, like shed repairs and winter prep, that could use an extra set of hands. If you’re into DIY or want to learn, this is a great opportunity. During winter, snow shoveling will be part of the routine. It’s great exercise, and honestly, who doesn’t love the occasional snowball fight.
Daily Life & Atmosphere
Our days are calm and cheerful, filled with music, fresh air, and the scent of homemade meals. In the evenings, we unwind with TV shows, board games, or just chatting over tea. Carl loves a good mystery show, and if you’re interested, he can teach you a few guitar basics. Maria, on the other hand, would be delighted to have a baking partner or someone curious about herbal remedies.
We’re like family, and with family comes honest communication. Sometimes discussions can get lively and a little loud, but it’s always respectful, and we welcome feedback. It’s part of how we keep things running smoothly and create a supportive environment where everyone feels heard and included.
We live by the motto, “Go with the flow, but always be ready to adapt.” Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and that’s okay. It’s a chance to get creative and learn to think on your feet.
Why Join Us
Workaway here is more than a volunteering opportunity, it’s a chance to grow, learn, and share. You’ll gain valuable life skills and experiences, such as
Cooking and baking: Learn how to bake delicious treats and discover the world of herbal remedies with Maria
Outdoor skills: Enjoy hiking, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing on our beautiful property
DIY and maintenance: Help with hands-on projects like shed repairs and home upkeep, great for building your practical skills
Cultural exchange: Experience life in rural Nova Scotia while sharing your own stories and experiences
Personal growth: Get a deeper understanding of senior living, companionship, and the importance of community
Healthy living: Embrace a simple, healthy routine with active days and restful nights
Creativity and fun: Whether it’s playing music, baking, or finding a clever solution to a household problem, there’s plenty of room to be creative
A Warm Welcome Awaits
This isn’t just a place to stay, it’s an invitation to join our family. We look out for one another, share meals, and create a supportive, positive atmosphere. If you’re someone who loves the outdoors, enjoys learning new things, and wants to experience rural living with a touch of adventure, we’d love to have you with us.

Hands-On Experience
You’ll gain practical skills that will serve you well beyond your stay. Whether it’s mastering winter preparations like snow clearing, learning how to winterize outdoor equipment, or keeping a garden alive through the colder months, you’ll leave with real-life knowledge that sticks.
Companionship and Connection
This is more than just a place to stay—it’s a chance to build deep, meaningful connections. Spending time with Carl and hearing his stories will offer you unique perspectives on life, while sharing laughs and conversations with us can broaden your views and help you see things from a new angle. Plus, you’ll learn the little things that can make a big difference in the life of a senior, an invaluable skill that’s all about empathy and understanding.
Skill Development
Think of this as a hands-on workshop. Carl can introduce you to the basics of playing guitar (who knows, you might even leave strumming a tune), and I’d love to help you explore your inner chef by teaching you some of our favorite winter recipes. You’ll also get experience in DIY home projects—skills that will come in handy wherever life takes you.
Outdoor Adventures and Well-Being
Fresh air and exercise are built into the experience. Whether you’re snowshoeing through beautiful winter trails, helping clear walkways, or just taking the dogs out for a snowy stroll, you’ll have plenty of chances to stay active while soaking in the peaceful
beauty of rural Nova Scotia.
Cultural Exchange and New Perspectives
We love sharing ideas, stories, and philosophies, and we hope you do too. Living with us is an opportunity to experience rural life and traditions while also sharing your own culture and perspectives. Those long winter evenings by the fire are perfect for thoughtful conversations and exchanging new ideas.
Personal Growth
You’ll develop practical skills, gain responsibility, and learn the art of teamwork in a family-like environment. Navigating daily life with us—whether it’s helping Carl, adapting to last-minute changes, or taking on tasks you’ve never done before—will challenge you in the best way possible and leave you with a stronger sense of independence and adaptability.
Insight into Senior Living
Not many people get the chance to experience senior life up close, and this is a unique opportunity to gain insight into what that means. You’ll learn how small acts of kindness, companionship, and communication can greatly enhance someone’s day. This experience will leave you more empathetic, understanding, and better equipped for future relationships with seniors.
Relaxation and Balance
It’s not all work—there’s plenty of time to relax. After a day of activity, you’ll get to enjoy peaceful evenings, unwind with a good book, play board games, or watch a cozy mystery show with Carl. It’s the perfect balance of productivity and leisure, giving you space to recharge while enjoying the warmth of a family atmosphere.
Broadened Worldview
Living in a different environment, surrounded by new people and ideas, opens the door to new ways of thinking. Whether it’s learning a new recipe, discovering a different perspective on life, or simply experiencing the slower pace of rural living, you’ll leave with a broader outlook on the world.Proyectos con niños

Ayuda
We’re reaching out because, let’s be honest, an extra set of hands around here could make all the difference. Here’s how you can become a key part of our home, and maybe even our unofficial family member
Be a Companion for Carl
We’re not just looking for someone to tick boxes on a to-do list. We’re hoping you’ll spend time with Carl, share a few laughs, swap stories, and maybe offer some gentle reminders when he “forgets” that cookies aren’t a food group. Errands in town? Great excuse for a scenic drive, and if Maria can’t make it, you’re the hero of the day. Carl is the top priority. We know you might want to spend time with your companion, but it’s important to balance that with meaningful conversation and activities with Carl. Your company can really make a positive impact on his day.
Help Us Finish Off Winter and Get Ready for Spring
We may be inching toward spring, but winter isn’t quite ready to pack its bags just yet. Your help with snow shoveling, clearing walkways, and keeping things tidy will be a big deal, especially when we need to take the dogs out for their daily adventures. Once the snow melts, we’ll start shifting gears to spring tasks, and there will be plenty to do as we get the place ready for the warmer months ahead. It’s not just about tackling chores but about working together to create a comfortable, welcoming home. Whether it’s clearing snow, fixing things, or cooking a meal, we believe teamwork makes the job easier and more enjoyable.
Expect Some Lively Conversations
We’re a close-knit family, which means we’re not shy about having honest, sometimes loud, discussions. It’s always respectful, but you might catch us enthusiastically debating what’s for dinner or whose turn it is to walk the dog. Feedback flows freely here, and we’re all about open communication. We love sharing thoughts and philosophies, trying out new meals, experimenting with baking, or just diving into interesting conversations. If you’re curious and eager to learn or discover new things, this is the place for you. But if you’re a quiet introvert who prefers to stay in their own bubble, this might not be the best fit.
Couples Are Welcome
We’re happy to host couples, but we do have one simple request: if you speak a different language, please use English when you’re in our company. We want to create an environment where everyone feels included and part of the conversation. This helps us keep things open, friendly, and connected.
Your role is more than just lending a hand with chores. It’s about being part of something special, sharing experiences, and adding warmth, humor, and connection to our everyday lives. We’re not just looking for an extra set of hands; we’re hoping to welcome a new friend who’ll fit right into the family chaos (in the best way, of course).
If this sounds like your kind of adventure and you’re keen on joining us, we’d be over the moon to hear from you. Let’s chat and see if this is the start of something great.
P.S. We’ll even pick you up from the Antigonish bus stop. It’s a scenic ride from Halifax or the airport, and we promise not to make you walk the rest of the way.Idiomas
