We’re so glad you’re considering joining us for a Workaway stay at our peaceful, sunny home. This isn’t just about lending a hand. It’s about sharing stories, learning together, helping one another, and becoming part of something gently meaningful.
If you enjoy spontaneous moments, real connection, homemade baking, and the joys of rural life with pets and people, we’d truly love to welcome you.
We’re a retired couple living in a small, simple home on a peaceful 5.5-acre rural property surrounded by nature. Our life is thoughtful and full of light, music, animals, creativity, and lots of unexpected laughter. We share our home with four cherished animals: our dog Jigger, our three cats Polly, Bella, and Lucia,.
Maria uses a wheelchair but is very independent. Carl is a kind-hearted senior who enjoys light outdoor projects, mystery shows, and playing guitar. He sometimes needs gentle help remembering things, staying focused, or completing tasks. He appreciates having a supportive companion to join him on errands or work outside with him. He doesn’t need personal care, just presence and encouragement. We’re looking for someone who enjoys spending time with seniors and would feel comfortable chatting with Carl, sharing stories, helping with outdoor or household tasks, and being a calm, kind part of the day.
In the summer, we often go for drives, explore nearby spots, and enjoy little adventures when the mood strikes. Maria is currently part of a community art display and may need help with setup or organization. Our home is full of life and often welcomes spontaneous visitors. Some days are quiet, and others are buzzing with energy and good conversation.
🐾 Who This Is For
We’d love to host someone who
• Enjoys being around elders and offering thoughtful companionship
• Loves animals and is happy to help feed, care for, and play with them
• Feels at home in a cozy, humble space with heart
• Enjoys cooking, learning new recipes, and spending time in the kitchen
• Can help with small, helpful tasks like tidying, watering, organizing, or folding laundry
• Can go with the flow and join in when things change or new opportunities pop up
🥘 Life, Meals, and Shared Moments
There’s no set routine here. Our days are spontaneous and shaped by what needs doing and what brings joy. One moment we might be baking, the next out watering plants, folding laundry, or chatting on the deck. We work, rest, and laugh together with a spirit of ease and flexibility.
We usually share two homemade meals a day, between 11 AM and 1 PM, and again between 4 and 6 PM. If you'd like snacks, soda, or a third meal, you're welcome to store your own items in the kitchen. Processed snacks like chips aren’t allowed indoors for health reasons, and we ask that meals be enjoyed in the kitchen or living room to help keep things clean and comfortable..
🌱 This Summer’s Adventures
Some of the projects and activities you might join us for:
• Organizing the shed and gardening tools
• Creating a cozy patio space for evening tea
• Planting and caring for a cheerful wildflower garden
• Caring for pets and their spaces
• Sweeping the deck, watering, folding laundry, or other light household upkeep
• Helping Maria with her art display and enjoying local outings together
You never quite know what the day will bring, but you’ll be part of it after all you will be part of the family

While we love cozy spaces, we ask that all meals and snacks stay in the kitchen or living room. No eating in the bedrooms, please, crumbs attract mice, and while we adore our pets, we’re not looking to add any whiskery freeloaders to the family. Let’s keep the bedrooms for sleeping, not snacking.

🌞 Daily Life, Connection, and a Dash of Fun
Our days are filled with natural light, music, fresh air, and the simple joys of shared living. The scent of baking often drifts through the house, and there’s always something going on—whether it’s a spur-of-the-moment tea break, a mystery show with Carl, or a chat while folding laundry. In the evenings, we enjoy quiet games, relaxed conversation, or just being together. Carl loves a good detective story and would be happy to show you a few guitar basics. Maria enjoys baking and loves sharing her knowledge of herbs, natural remedies, and old-school kitchen wisdom. She would be thrilled to find a baking buddy or someone curious to learn.
Our home runs on open and honest communication. Sometimes conversations get lively, but they’re always rooted in mutual respect and kindness. We welcome feedback and encourage you to share your thoughts and ideas. Around here, we like to say, “Go with the flow, but be ready to stir the soup if needed.” Plans can change quickly, but those changes often lead to creativity, laughter, and unexpected connection.
This Workaway experience isn’t just about helping, it’s about learning, growing, and being part of something real. Whether you're baking with Maria, helping Carl outside, watering the garden, or enjoying a peaceful moment with the pets, you’ll gain hands-on skills and memories that go beyond your stay.
This isn’t just a place to sleep. It’s a home, a real one. A small, lively, slightly unpredictable household full of warmth, purpose, and good food. We cook together, share stories, support one another, and find joy in the simple things. If you're someone who enjoys the outdoors, likes learning new things, and values kindness over perfection, we’d be happy to welcome you into our world.Tipos de ayuda y oportunidades de aprendizaje

🌍 What You’ll Experience Here
🛠️ Hands-On Learning and Practical Skills
You’ll have the chance to pick up real-life skills that stay with you. From helping with light DIY projects to organizing outdoor spaces, caring for the garden, or learning how to cook a few hearty meals, this is the kind of experience that teaches through doing. Whether you’re folding laundry with music in the background or building something with Carl, every task becomes a small moment of growth.
💬 Meaningful Companionship and Connection
This isn’t just a place to stay. It’s a chance to build genuine relationships. Spending time with Carl, hearing his stories, and sharing meals with us isn’t just kind. It’s life-changing. You’ll learn how little things, like a shared joke or a thoughtful reminder, can brighten someone’s entire day. This is the kind of connection that stays with you.
🧁 Skill Development Through Daily Life
Think of this as a hands-on life workshop. Carl might teach you the basics of guitar if you’re curious. Maria would love to bake with you or show you how to make one of her family’s traditional recipes. You’ll experience the rhythm of daily home care like cooking, tidying, and organizing. These small things often turn out to be surprisingly useful wherever life takes you.
👵 Working with a Senior and Supporting Someone in a Wheelchair
One of the most meaningful parts of your stay will be learning how to support both a senior and someone who uses a wheelchair. Maria is very independent, but she also appreciates thoughtful help when it’s offered with respect. You’ll gain insight into how to assist without overstepping, how to offer presence without pressure, and how to understand that dignity and autonomy matter deeply. These are rare and valuable life skills grounded in empathy, patience, and awareness.
🌿 Time in Nature and Peaceful Activity
Our home is surrounded by trees, fresh air, and space to breathe. You might walk the dog along a wooded path, water the wildflowers, or help create a peaceful patio spot to enjoy the evening light. The activity here is gentle and fulfilling, never rushed. It’s part of a slower rhythm that connects body, heart, and mind.
🍲 Cultural Exchange and Conversation
We love sharing stories, ideas, and traditions, and we welcome yours too. Our kitchen table is often where good conversations begin, whether about life, food, history, or just what’s on our minds tha day. This is a place where different perspectives are exchanged with kindness and curiosity.
🏡 Personal Growth in a Supportive Home
Living here offers a glimpse into multigenerational, pet-loving, small-town life. You’ll grow in confidence, learn how to adapt to new dynamics, and discover the joy of doing ordinary things in a new way. You’ll gain first-hand experience in senior support, disability awareness, and building connection through shared daily care. You’re not just observing. You my dear will be family and are part of it.
🛋️ Balance Between Helping and Resting
It’s not all work and we wouldn’t want it to be. After a day of helping and connecting, you’ll have time to rest and recharge. Whether it’s reading in the sun, playing a board game, watching a cozy mystery with Carl, or sitting in the garden, you’ll find peace here too.
🌎 A Broader View of Life
This is the kind of place that opens your mind while calming your heart. You’ll learn new things, meet new people, and experience the slower pace of rural living. And when it’s time to go, you may find you’re carrying more than you came with. Not just skills, but memories, insights, and a deeper sense of what really matters.
📚 Improve Your English, One Laugh at a Time
If you're hoping to practice or improve your English, you’ve come to the right house because Maria loves to talk. A lot. About everything. Whether you’re baking, planting, folding laundry, or just having tea, there’s always a story, a joke, or a new word flying your way.
We speak clearly, we’re patient, and we genuinely enjoy helping others learn. You won’t just hear English. You’ll live it. And don’t worry about making mistakes. Around here, we celebrate them, laugh a little, and learn together.
You’ll leave with better language skills, a few new phrases, and probably one or two of Maria’s catchphrases. Just don’t blame us if you start dreaming in Nova Scotian.Proyectos con niños

🛠️ The Help We’re Looking For
We’re reaching out because, to be honest, an extra set of hands around here could make all the difference. This is your chance to become a key part of our home and maybe even feel like an unofficial member of the family.
🧓 Be a Companion for Carl
We’re not just looking for someone to do chores or check off tasks. What we really need is someone to spend time with Carl, keep an eye and share a few laughs, tell stories, and offer gentle reminders when he insists cookies count as a full meal. If you’re up for the occasional town errand, that’s a bonus. Maria can’t always go, and your help means Carl gets out and about.
Carl is the heart of this home. We understand you may be traveling with a partner or friend, but it’s important to balance that with time spent connecting with him. A good conversation or a shared activity can brighten his whole day.
🌼 Help Us with Summer Projects
Summer here is a time to freshen things up and get creative. We’re tidying outdoor spaces, organizing the shed, sorting garden tools, and setting up a cozy patio area. We’re also planting wildflowers to support bees, birds, and pollinators. Your help with watering, weeding, folding laundry, or prepping meals makes a big difference. The work is casual, shared, and always appreciated. This isn’t about perfection, it’s about showing up with care.
☕ Expect Some Lively Conversations
We’re a talkative household that believes in honest, respectful communication. Sometimes conversations get animated, especially when we’re choosing what to cook or trying to remember who walked the dog last. If you enjoy exploring ideas, learning something new, or experimenting in the kitchen, this is the place for you. If you prefer quiet independence and minimal interaction, this probably isn’t the best fit.
👥 Couples Are Welcome
We’re happy to host couples and enjoy the energy they can bring. We ask that you speak English while you're with us so everyone feels included and comfortable. While we absolutely respect your need for personal time, this isn’t meant to be a private retreat. We’re looking for people who want to be involved—not just in tasks, but in conversations, shared meals, and daily life.
We hope both of you will take part in the social side of the household, spend time with Carl, and become part of the natural rhythm of our family.
Your time here is about more than helping with tasks. It’s about sharing small joys, bringing a little lightness to each day, and becoming part of a warm and welcoming home. We’re not just looking for help—we’re hoping to meet someone who feels right at home and brings their own kindness and humour into the mix.
If that sounds like your kind of summer experience, we’d love to hear from you. Let’s chat and see if this could be a good fit for all of us.
P.S. We’ll gladly pick you up from the Antigonish bus stop. It’s a scenic ride from Halifax or the airport, and we promise not to leave you on the side of the road.
🌟 A Few Final Things to Know Before You Come
🧡 This Is a Home, Not a Job
We’re not running a business. We’re opening our home. The tasks here are simple but meaningful, and we appreciate helpers who bring presence, not perfection. If you love real conversation, shared meals, and helping out like a good neighbour would, you’ll fit in beautifully.
🐾 Carl and the Pets Are the Heart of the Home
Carl enjoys good company, gentle support, and the occasional partner-in-crime for daily projects. Our animals bring a little chaos and a lot of joy. We also feed a few outdoor cats, and we appreciate help keeping everyone well cared for.
💬 We Love to Talk
We’re a social household. The kettle is often on, and there’s usually a story in the air. We value kind, honest communication. If you enjoy chats around the table and sharing a few laughs, you’ll feel right at home.
👥 Couples Are Welcome
We love hosting couples who enjoy being part of a shared household. We simply ask that you speak English in common spaces so everyone feels included, and that both of you actively participate—not just in chores, but in conversation and connection.
🚭 No Cannabis Use
We kindly ask that volunteers do not smoke or use cannabis during their stay. This is a quiet home, and we prefer to keep it substance-free.
🍽️ Please, No Meals in the Bedroom
We ask that snacks and meals be enjoyed in the kitchen or living room only. Crumbs in the bedroom are an open invitation for mice, and we’d rather not add any whiskery squatters to the family.
🌱 Downtime Is Important Too
There’s time to relax, breathe, and enjoy. Whether you’re reading in the garden, exploring a nearby trail, or just sitting quietly with a cup of tea, this is a peaceful place to recharge.
🚗 Need a Ride? We’ve Got You
We’re happy to pick you up at the Antigonish bus stop, which connects easily from Halifax or the airport. And if we’re heading into town, you’re welcome to join us.
🧳 You’ll Leave With More Than You Came With
A skill, a memory, a recipe, a story, maybe even a new way of seeing things. Our hope is that you leave with something lasting, and that for a little while, this place truly felt like home.Idiomas

🌟 A Few Final Things to Know Before You Come
🧡 This Is a Home, Not a Hostel
We live in a real home with real lives, real quirks, and real warmth. We’re not looking for perfection. We’re looking for someone kind, curious, and willing to be part of something simple and meaningful. If you enjoy connection, slow days, and sharing a bit of yourself, you'll feel right at home.
💡 We Like Light, Laughter, and People Who Speak Their Mind
We’re drawn to people who enjoy bright rooms, open conversation, shared laughter, and a good board game. We also value honesty. If something’s bothering you, we’d much rather talk about it gently than guess at what’s going on. This is a home where being up front is part of being respectful.
We understand the need for personal space. Taking quiet time alone in your room is totally okay. But this is a household that thrives on companionship. If you're looking to stay mostly to yourself or prefer to be withdrawn, this may not be the best match. We really are like family here.
🧑🦳 Carl and the Animals Matter Most
Carl enjoys simple routines, light outdoor work, music, and kind company. He doesn’t need care, just a good listener and a warm presence. Our pets are part of our daily life too. We care for a few strays along with our indoor crew, and their comfort means a lot to us.
💬 We Share More Than Space
Whether you’re helping cook, folding laundry, or just chatting over tea, you’re part of the circle. This is not a place where tasks are traded for a bed. It’s about helping one another and enjoying the small things that make a home feel alive.
Workaway often find themselves talking to Maria about life, about how to face a challenge, shift a mindset, or make peace with something that’s hard. She’s always happy to listen and offer perspective, whether it’s through a story, a bit of humour, or a quiet moment of truth. If you’re someone who values those deeper conversations, you’ll likely find them here.
👫 Couples Are Welcome
We’re happy to host couples, especially those who enjoy connecting with others and taking part in the flow of the household. We welcome people from all backgrounds and cultures, and everyone is respected here. To help keep shared conversations open and inclusive, we ask that English be spoken in common areas so no one feels left out.
🧘 Rest is Part of the Rhythm
There’s space here to slow down, read, go for a walk, or just sit quietly and enjoy a moment of calm. Helping matters, but so does rest. We want you to feel at ease.
🧳 What You’ll Take With You
You might leave with a new recipe, a practical skill you didn’t expect to learn, or a funny story that sticks with you for years. You might learn how to fold a fitted sheet while laughing at a kitchen joke, or how to plant wildflowers that call bees home.
You could leave with a new way of thinking about life, a habit you never had before, or even a gentler approach to your own path. Some people leave with more peace. Others leave with more questions , and that’s good too.
You may find that being part of a small, lived-in home with a lot of love shifts something inside you. Maybe it's the conversations over tea. Maybe it's the quiet comfort of being useful. Or maybe it’s just Maria, handing you a biscuit and saying, “Well, that’s life, isn’t it?”
And yes, there’s a good chance you’ll walk away with one of Maria’s catchphrases stuck in your head too. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. 😄Un poco más de información
