We are focused on preserving the natural and cultural environment in Calga. The Foundation engages volunteers to assist the sanctuary team with their conservation work. We care for around 200 animals in the sanctuary, as well as the wild habitat of all the creatures that live in their 80 acres of bushland. We also protect Aboriginal sites and work with the local Aboriginal community to preserve and teach about Aboriginal culture. The park and the Foundation receive no government assistance so we are completely reliant on visitor tickets to fund our work, and on volunteers to extend the resources of the small team to enable us to achieve our primary goal of "conservation through education".

Emerse yourself in the Australian bush. Volunteer alongside Aussies and other international travellers. Experience what goes on behind the scenes in a a real working wildlife sanctuary. Live with Australia's weird and wonderful animals. Hang out with the friendliest kangaroos and emus in Australia. Go spotlighting at night as the bush comes alive after sunset. Yes you can touch (most of) the animals. No you can't feed them. Yes this is the real bush. Yes we do have snakes and spiders. Yes we will train you on how to share the bush safely with the wildlife. No this does NOT count towards your 2nd year visa.

Volunteers with us live and help in the park in Calga on the NSW Central Coast Hinterland. The tasks we need help with are cleaning and maintaining our buildings and 80 acres of natural bushland, paths, fox-proof fencing, signage, visitor center and animal enclosures. We need people who will work hard in all weather conditions, who're not afraid to get dirty, and who want to be part of a small but amazing team. Hands-on animal work is minimal as most of this work is done by our ranger team, but you may be called on to help from time to time. Your work is more about looking after the bush and keeping the visitor amenities clean and in good repair. If you have special skills like handyman experience or sign-writing or path building or plant propagation, let us know. There are so many jobs, both general and specialised, that we would really like to get done.

Bunk-room accommodation with other volunteers on-site. The accommodation is very basic, but comfortable. Resident volunteers are expected to do their own housework and laundry and we do have strict rules about everyone doing their share of the work. We will stock your pantry with groceries. Breakfast is cereal and toast. Lunch is make-your-own wraps or sandwiches. We will usually make dinner for you on worknights, or we will provide you with something easy for you to put together. Food is simple but there's lots of it. We don't cater for special diets, although having your own pantry means you do have choices on what to.put together for your meals and there is always good canned vegetarian soup varieties and instant noodles in the cupboard. The 2 diets that might be too hard to accommodate are vegan and gluten free, although you are welcome to supply your own food if preferred.

For so many reasons, this is an alcohol-free zone and we have absolute zero tolerance for drugs!

The train station and bus terminus at Gosford are a 15 minute car drive from us. We usually head out to the shops 2 or 3 times a week if you want a lift down to Gosford. It's an hour-and-a-half by train from Gosford to Sydney or Port Stephens. Or you can head to the beach at Terrigal or the big shopping mall at Erina. Or you may want to just relax at the sanctuary on your days off.

You will need to wear the right kind of clothes! You will need hiking boots or other sturdy footwear that supports your ankles. You will need long cargo workpants or comfortable (not tight) jeans. Leggings and shorts are NOT acceptable work wear. You will need to buy two Park t-shirts so that you are identifiable as being on the team (as otherwise visitors and staff get confused about who is who). You will need a warm jacket - we wear fleecy jackets as being the most comfortable and most practical. You will need to look professional when at work. Hats are really important, as is sunscreen, in the Australian sun. And we strongly recommend insect repellent so that you don't get eaten by mosquitoes, ticks or leaches.
