Descripción
I am a quiet person, not for crowded places. I enjoy woodworking and gardening in my small botanical garden. I like to listen to audio books while weeding, so I "read" quite a lot as there is lots of weeding to do ;) I also like hiking and traveling, but to less crowded places and not the most turistical spots.

I live in a small village Spodnja Kungota, near the second largest city of Slovenia, Maribor. The location is quite close to Austria - just around 12 kms. I planted first trees around 25 year ago and I bought some more land (10.000m2) just after covid to plant some more ;) During covid I made pathways through the garden and in the last years I started plating ferns and other perenials along those pathways to make it more interesting. I am always happy to have some help for the work in the garden and of course ideas to improove it ;)

I like cycling, but I do it with a recumbent and not a normal bicycle. I prefer the comfort of the recumbent seat, but the best advantage is the view you have while cycling the hills. If I have a choice of a flat road or a hilly one, I will certainy choose the hill. I have done traveling in the past, but can not do it at the moment as I can not be gone more than max 3 weeks due to my company... I have to work on a solution ;)

We can visit interesting local sights in the area. Do hiking in the local hills, exchange cultural, travel and work experiences. I will be glad to show you woodworking, explain about my gardening experience and would enjoy learning about your experience and perhaps even some new skills from you.

I have my own company selling woodworking tools, so if you would like to learn anything about that, I will be glad to explain my ways and experiences.
Ayuda
Help in the botanical garden and around the house is always welcome. The positive side of having a big graden is, you can always choose what you want to do that day ;) We can also do some woodworking if you would be interested. Or if you like sanding, I can arrange for a lot of sanding as I am not really keen on that :D

Alojamiento
You will get a private room with a single bed and your own bathroom. Smokers please do not apply as I do not allow smoking either inside or out of the house.

We would either shop and prepare our meals together or you could also use the kitchen as if at home.

My first Workaway adventure took me near Maribor, to Peter's hillside home. Just as Sabrina described, both the house and its surroundings are stunning. The house itself is safe, spacious, and modern, equipped with all the necessary appliances. The yard, truly immense, is mostly on a slope. You can enjoy the clean air, diverse trees, bushes,… read more various fragrant plants, and fruits. As for accommodation, I had my own room and bathroom, sharing the living room and kitchen. I truly had my privacy and peace, along with everything I needed for a comfortable stay.

We initially connected through the Workaway platform, then used WhatsApp for further arrangements, and even had one phone call to align expectations.

I spent almost three weeks on my first Workaway. My main task was gardening. When I arrived, Peter explained what needed to be done and where to find the tools. For any additional information, I could simply contact him by phone.

I mostly worked in the mornings. I chose to focus on weeding the paths and trimming the hedges with a chainsaw – there's quite a lot of it! However, Peter also needs help with general weeding, fixing paths, and, if there's a drought, watering the plants. There's truly a lot of work around the house in spring and summer, but Peter has created a beautiful oasis. Regarding insects, there are quite a few, though they mostly keep to themselves. It's a good idea to bring along something for ticks and, of course, a sun protection.

In my free time, I explored Maribor. It's about a 15-minute walk to the bus stop, then another 15-minute bus ride to Maribor bus station. The bus company is Arriva, and the stop is Morski Jarek K. Buses run frequently during the week, and three times a day on weekends.

Whenever he could, Peter gave me a ride to either the bus stop or the city center. He's very punctual and easy to coordinate with. He also picked me up in Maribor when I arrived and dropped me off there when I left. He even gave me a tour of the city one day.

We often talked about all sorts of things, which helped me better understand both the Slovenian language and the way of life in the area.

He showed me his office, and we went on several excursions by car or on foot. I even had the chance to try out a recumbent bicycle and a forklift! I'm glad that, thanks to him, I also tried wood carving, even though it wasn't easy for me :) and met his fellow artists.

Sometimes we'd go to the grocery store together, and other times he'd bring whatever was needed himself.
Peter is a really good (and fast) cook. He goes to bed early and wakes up even earlier.

Oh, and I shouldn't forget about his two cats, who mostly stay outside or on the ground floor.

All in all, it was a nice experience, and it wasn't easy to leave.

This was my second Workaway journey, and this time it brought me back home — to Slovenia, the country where I was born and raised. I’m always excited to explore new places that spark my curiosity, but coming back to Slovenia feels deeply familiar, like flipping to a well-loved page in a book. Its beauty is quiet and grounding — from the peaceful… read more mountains to the flowing rivers and the stillness that seems to wrap around you. No matter where I wander, this land will always be my heart’s anchor.

This time, I had the chance to stay at Peter’s place, and honestly, it felt like stepping into a fairytale. His home is tucked away on a hill above a valley, surrounded by stunning views and so much nature. I stayed for just a week, but it went by in what felt like a few deep breaths.

Peter’s house has a creative and cozy atmosphere, and it's surrounded by a huge botanical garden filled with more than 50 different trees and over 100 plants. The land is divided into little areas, each with its own vibe, so I could pick a different spot every day — perfect for relaxing, doing yoga, or simply enjoying some quiet time.

The garden is full of life and always changing, and I really enjoyed helping out with the daily work — trimming hedges, weeding, and just being part of the natural rhythm of the place. There was no pressure, just a relaxed and open space where I could choose how I wanted to contribute.

Peter is a kind, down-to-earth person with lots of interesting stories, especially about his cycling and wood modeling adventures. If you take a moment to ask, he’ll happily share them with you. His two cats, Charly and Oscar, also add so much charm to the place. They’re outdoor cats who like to check in on you throughout the day. Charly, in particular, was always stopping by — sometimes for a cuddle, sometimes to proudly show off his latest catch.

For nature lovers, this place is a dream. The area around Kungota is perfect for hiking and biking, and there are even some well-known vineyards nearby. Peter and I also went on a few short cycling trips and hikes together, which was a lovely way to see more of the region.

Peter, thank you for welcoming me so openly into your world — a place full of beauty, creativity, and peace.

I’m sure your land, already so full of life, will only grow more special with every new idea and plant you add.
You truly are a unique soul, and it’s clear how much joy and purpose you find in working outdoors, connected to the earth each day.

I wish you many sunny paths ahead and plenty of exciting cycling adventures.
I’ll definitely be checking in — and I really hope to return to your beautiful hilltop home someday.
