Saludos! I'm Lisa, born in in 1969 in Zurich, Switzerland to a Swiss father and a Puerto Rican mother. After a 40 year career in communications, and ongoing engagements in other areas (civil service, arts, real estate), I decided at the beginning of the pandemic to spend more time in nature than in front of screens. In 2020 I started this permaculture project in the mountains of Yabucoa. My goal is to create a syntropic edible forest to eat from and leave to the next generation. This is a non-commercial, idealistic and neighbourhood friendly project, and I'm most greatful for enthusiastic, fit, healthy, heat resistant, nature loving volunteers, preferably experienced in farming, who love to share over meals and see when and where help is needed, even when not told what to do. This is a 100% drug and smoke free environment for people who love peace and quietness.

You will learn a lot about Puerto Rico's flora and fauna, will cherish to eat what grows, and can interact with other volunteers over meals. You can practice your languages, learn how to use garden and other tools, get creative (paint, write, sew), read, relax, play board games (on request I'll teach you how Puerto Ricans play Domino and can show you the basic Salsa steps, too). Sustainability and mindfulness applies to all resources.
Ayuda
I offer a comfortable bed and three plant-based whole-food meals a day in exchange for 25 hours of help per week. Clear the land, cut back trees and bushes, plant, deweed, trim, harvest, mulch, apply compost, ... following regenerative permaculture and syntropic methods. You'll work with me, with fellow volunteers and farmers, sometimes alone. There is always enough to do on my (steep) hillside land under the tropical sun, as well as in and around the house. Brigade days: Every other week we might impact another farm or receive fellow farmers on our land. In case you are a builder we might have some house improvements waiting for you. When it comes to household chores (dishes, laundry, cleaning) we help each others, nevermind the gender. Keep in mind that there is no public transportation and you'll be "stuck" to the farm. Explore the creek and walk the paths, find your favorite spot to contemplate,... I urge you not to spend your off time in or on your bed because the mattresses need to air out! You'll find a comfortable porch and living room to hang out and relax.
We are in growing zone 12+, so not comparable to mainland USA farming, as extremely hot and humid. There will be some stinging insects, and most volunteer consider the work hard. It helps if you are familiar with plant-based (vegetarian/vegan) food, and if you are in great physical shape.

I speak German, Spanish, English, French and Italian. Volunteers are welcome to brush up and practice their languages with me and introduce me to theirs. As most volunteers are (only) English speakers, you'll most likely not get the Spanish immersion you might hope for.
Alojamiento
Comfortable house with four beds in two rooms and a shared bathroom. Mosquito screens on all windows, mostly lower temperatures than in the cities, but still tropically hot. Solar power and water cistern add to the eco lifestyle. We practize reduce/reuse/recycle/compost. Be considerate with the resources (short showers etc.).

The house is about 60 min from San Juan. There is NO public transportation. Uber drivers come up from Palmas del Mar, Humacao (no guaranteed availability, though), and charge approx. $30 to $100 for a one-way-ride to San Juan or to a swimming beach. I pick up new volunteers in San Juan and drop them off again in San Juan on previously arranged specific dates and times. Individual transport needs must be paid by the volunteers. Every 7 to 14 days you might be able to tag along when I go shopping. As I provide for all meals, there is no fridge space for volunteers. But you can bring non-perishable snacks if needed. No food in the bedrooms.
All meals are taken together at approx. 6:30AM (7AM in Winter) around 12:30PM and again around 6:30PM. I cook plant-based whole food (vegeterian/vegan).
Strictly no smoking or vaping, no drugs, no noise. No phones during meals.

Fast/reliable fiber optic internet is provided, but I strongly suggest to spend as little time as possible online, as the idea is to be outdoors and offline as much as you can, and also help me with household chores such as washing, cooking, cleaning. Use the opportunity to engage in conversations, practice an instrument, play games, or get crafty. No phones during meals.

Meghna was a great volunteer. A quick and eager learner, very smart and kind, respectful and adventurous. She helped wherever needed, from deweeding to cooking, making good use of any tool - from electric jigsaw to machete. I'd host her again anytime and can highly recommend her to future hosts.

Elio loves plants and soil, insects and other living creatures. He worked very independently and hard, and put in more hours than he signed up for. He mixed natural repellants, deweeded, planted, trimmed,... He shared what he learned on other farms and easily connected with other volunteers and neighbors. I also enjoyed the conversations.

Jesse embraced the farm work challenges and was at all times willing to help. He brought a lot of good inputs to the conversations. He was quiet and tidy, patient and respectful - which I always cherish in volunteers. It was a pleasure meeting him and sharing Easter/Pesach up in the Yabucoa mountains.

My friend and I had four wonderful days at Lisa’s beautiful home in the mountains.
She is very attentive, forthcoming, fun and knowledgeable about flora/fauna in Puerto Rico. We worked with many different things/tools and really had the chance to experience farm life in the tropics and enjoy tummy meals with interesting people.
Lisa is awesome!

It was great to work with Amanda on the farm. She put a lot of energy into all projects, built several structures with bamboo, cleared the land, worked the soil, deweeded, planted,... She was a good team player but also enjoyed doing things independently. I was happy that she stayed for several weeks and wish her the best for all future stays.

Four days before pick up Jan went silent. I'm not sure what happened, but he never got back to me, even though he had confirmed his stay. Unfortunately he did not give me a number to call and the platform marked my messages to him as unread. I hope he's fine.

Ted put a lot of energy into his building projects (new bamboo fence, improved bamboo shed) but also helped deweeding and moving the soil for yam and plantain planting. We enjoyed his guitar playing and creativity.
