Sometimes family is home at other times it is just me; Coach Mac. I am busy with my electrical work, and surfing as much as possible. I warn you in advance, many travelers became addicted to surfing after staying here

Room and board: typically a private bedroom, bathroom and tiny kitchen, living room and laundry, vegetarian food provided. Short walk to a sandy beach, bikes available, County bus service all around the island, bus stop about 2 blocks from the house. We like to adventure, and you will be invited: surfing, hiking, exploring and kayaking. Our success rate for teaching basic surf skills is high.

Peaceful vegetarian home 3 blocks from the beach seeking help in the home and garden. Prepare occasional evening meals, house cleaning. Seasonally fruit picking. Vegetable gardening for those who enjoy that.

Separate entrance, hall connected bedroom, bathroom, Livingroom. Outside shower. There is a washer and a dryer, full kitchen and free wifi. Sometimes travelers accept sleeping on a couch and we have let travelers tent camp in the yard on occasion. Kitchen stocked with mostly vegetarian food, sorry we do not have mammal or bird flesh for consumption.

Our home is quiet and peaceful, some moderate legal age alcohol consumption okay. No illegal intoxicants and no tobacco products allowed on the property. Travelers often take the bus to explore the island, and some found hitchhiking a good method of getting around. I do not suggest hitchhiking alone. The island offers incredible sightseeing from beaches to rain forests, waterfalls and caves.

My stay with Mac was absolutely great! I stayed together with another girl and we got along great, she usually helped with cooking and I did some cleaning. Mac often took us surfing and hiking and both of us loved our stay here! Thanks again Mac for the amazing weeks.

Thank you, Mac, for everything! You’re the best surfer and always inspire me to enjoy every wave.
I felt like home. He took me all around the island, showing me so many special places. I loved everything we saw and everything we did together—it was unforgettable.
It’s been 4 months since I left Kaua‘i, but I still miss it every day!

Coach Mac provided an unforgettable experience. I would 110% recommend blessing his home on Kauai. He is sarcastic with very much dry humor. In my honest opinion makes him that much better. I learned to surf and fell in love with Kauai, and everything Mac had to offer.

I’ll start by saying that my needs were met in this experience: I had a roof over my head and food in my stomach. I stayed for five weeks in total.

As for an exchange, it was not- it was only good when other travelers were there. If he doesn’t like you, it becomes very clear very quickly. He did not like me.

I made sure to contribute to the … read more household in hopes that this would change. I took care of the recycling, I worked on the compost, I cleaned up the garden breaking down the tree branches in the way of the laundry line, and I attempted to start a small plot of kale and butter lettuce (but the chickens ate away the seedlings that did sprout). In the house I swept regularly, I cleaned the bathroom, I cooked dinners which I always offered to him, and most nights I made sure the sink was cleared before going to bed. All around I made sure my end of this bargain was met.

In exchange, I consistently received silence or a sarcastic remark, a brush off when I asked if we could do any activities, and tense hesitancy when given any form of responsibility. By the end of my stay I felt incredibly uncomfortable being around the house and judged if I did anything on my own.

He will excuse much of this as his humor, but when it’s the only way you interact with someone it looses it’s humor and becomes malice.

One particular experience that stood out was when he took me and another garden girl to Wailua Falls. I went expecting to hike down to the waterfall. When we arrived to the parking lot I was asked if I could stay at the car so that the garden girl’s things didn’t get stolen. Essentially, I was in a car for an hour just to go hiking only to be left completely behind and on my own when we got there. What was particularly interesting was when other travelers arrived and he took them on the same exact hike but left no one behind to watch their valuable items, including a two thousand dollar camera.

I know his perspective of me is that I bummed around all day, however he made less than a minimal effort to engage with me in conversation or activities. I encourage you to reach out to me if you have any questions about my experience or hesitations to go.

(It is safe, you will have shelter and you will have food most of the time. I encourage you to only visit for a week at most and to either rent a car or figure out a way to explore the island without relying on him to help you.)
