CURRENTLY REQUIRING: mostly photography, assistance with online presence, website development.
We are a desert camp in the Wadi Rum Protected Area. We host guests from around the world and offer an authentic Bedouin experience and offer tours to explore the protected area. We welcome volunteers to help us with the day to day running of the camp as well as the constant projects we have to improve the camp facilities.
We aim to have a positive impact on our environment, society, visitors and other stakeholders and are confident you will have a rewarding experience staying with us.
We set goals for all volunteers who stay with us and expect to make improvements in the camp with each volunteers stay. This is both to ensure the progress of the camp and to ensure that each volunteer can clearly recognise the positive impact they have over the duration of their stay.
The opportunity will include spending time with the Bedouin staff in the camp and sharing in the culture. There will be various opportunities to sightsee and for those who stay 2 weeks with us we will ensure you are able to join a tour to see the highlights of the protected area.
The camp is set up with traditional Bedouin tents and various activities and there will always be some planned projects to assist with. Your knowledge of basic online tools and English proficiency are of great benefit for us to assist in interacting with guests and there will be opportunities to develop your Arabic if this is of interest as well as gain a greater understanding of the customs.
The required assistance will vary but will be built around a foundation of assistance with correspondence to guests and assistance with online presence. As well as an assortment of tasks related to camp improvements.
The exchange will include transport to and from Rum village, all meals and accomodation for the duration of your stay.

You will spend each day with traditional Bedouins whom hold great practical knowledge as well as live with customs that are unique and interesting. You will experience and expand your understanding of their culture and lifestyle.
You will gain a greater understanding of Bedouin culture but also Islam, Arabic and desert cultures which all overlap in this community.
In general we take a flexible approach to volunteers. We like to find work that suits a volunteers interests. Things that they are passionate about and want to deliver great results and have an impact on the improvement of the camp, as such we are open to volunteer engagement in setting targets of what can be achevied and leveraging the skill set of each volunteer.
The primary task required of all volunteers will be to manage guest communication. As the camp is off the grid that will mean that each morning with the guest departures you will travel to the village. Here you will respond to any guest enquiries and schedule any reservations or administrative tasks required. Once this is complete you will have the opportunity to complete personal tasks online before returning to the camp before lunch.
The standard daily schedule will be: Breakfast between 7:30-8:30am
Transport to village 8:30am
Guest communication administration from 9:00am
Return to camp scheduled with guest arrival during day.
Afternoon in camp with potential for camp improvement initiatives or free time.
In addition to this there is ongoing minor projects to improve the camp, depending on your interests, skill set and how busy the camp is, at times where there is appropriate tasks it will be expected that you contribute but on days where there is nothing pressing you are encouraged to undertake personal initiatives including sightseeing.
NOTE 2: Currently the camp is in particular need of volunteers with a camera and sufficient skills to take quality photography in harsh and low light situations. The desert is particularly difficult to photograph due to the contrasts in light. If you have these skills please mention it to us as we would be happy to include you in activities and tours to build up our database of photography.
The primary types of assistance required depending on your skill set will be
- to assist with communicating with tourists and other stake holders
- minor repairs and improvements to the camp
- the daily running of the camp
- photography for use by the camp in promoting ourselves
But this will depend greatly on the initiatives being driven by the camp at any point in time.
Accomodation will be provided either in a traditional tent within the desert camp or basic accomodation within the village. You will almost exclusively stay in the camp and accomodation will only be provided in the village where it is required to facilitate tasks or timings of other activities.
When available volunteer will be able to stay in the same facilities provided to tourists who visit the desert. Accomodation will depend on availability of accomodation after reservations. If there is spare rooms volunteers will be able to utilise private rooms, otherwise either dormitory accomodation in the camp or alternate accomodation in the village. All bathroom facilities in the camp are shared facilities.
All meals will be provided usually of a large shared platter as is traditional within Bedouin communities. Breakfast and dinner are at set times for all guests, staff and volunteers and lunch will be coordinated around timings of guest activities and works in the camp.
Wadi Rum is a major tourist destination and there are plenty of nearby attractions to seek out in your free time. We will endeavour to make these accessible to all volunteers. Additionally where possible volunteers will be given the opportunity to join their host in daily life activities.
