Carmen spent 4 weeks with us in 2024. She was our first workaway guest to come as a Spanish teacher, with the intention of creating an intensive Spanish learning experience for Edith. At Edith's request, the focus was on conversational skills, and increasing Edith's ease in speaking Spanish. Having a professional Spanish teacher in our home was a

Carmen was very patient and flexible, working her schedule around our activities, and frequently changing teaching methods in response to what worked best. Edith was delighted to find her language skills improved after working with Carmen, and she was able to participate more easily in online Spanish classes after this experience.
Although Carmen's work was supposed to be only teaching, she also frequently volunteered to help by cleaning and cooking to make sure she gave her full hours, even when Edith was too busy for all the teaching hours. She washed windows and window screens, cleaned the bathrooms, dusted, and washed floors. She also made tasty food, including an Ecuadorean fish stew, Spanish potato and egg tortilla, and a French couscous salad.
Though accustomed to large cities, Carmen loved being in our tiny town, and found special places to enjoy the local community, beaches, and walks. She was respectful of our schedule, and was a quiet and enjoyable guest. It was fun to introduce her to some of our family and friends, and she even spoke Spanish and facilitated a conversation group in Spanish with some of our friends.

She did a fantastic job learning how to recognize local weeds and invasive plants, working carefully to clear the weeds from each area we asked her to help with. … read more cool temperatures, and with tough jobs like digging out gigantic blackberry roots. When we went to Seattle for a week she took on housework that had been neglected for years like dusting high rafters and a rock chimney, and cleaning out a kitchen stove vent clogged with oil and grease. She had a positive attitude though all of the work. Zhifang was great company, enjoying our local area, showing us her wonderful digital drawing skills, and exploring nearby communities. She was very respectful of our household expectations, conscientious about her work hours, and ended up working more than we asked to finish a task that took more time than we expected. She even drew a delightful original artwork that illustrated her experience with us, such a sweet parting gift. If you are fortunate enough to have Zhifang as a workaway guest you will be very pleased.

In Wheeler, the work involved gardening, mostly weeding. I pulled out enough weeds to last a lifetime! And mad respect to the blackberries—they have very giant roots and a strong will to take over the place! I had never done that before, but Edith was very kind and patient, making the tasks clear and praising my efforts. Her encouragement made the work enjoyable.
The family treated me like one of their own. They drove me to and from the places I wanted to visit, showed me the best spots in town, and offered many treats—Buttercup’s ice cream is the best! Jill also made me chicken and spaghetti, which was very delicious. I had eczema and they even gave me cream that helped it recover. They are genuinely wonderful people to be around.
One week in Seattle felt too short. I cleaned the house and had the chance to meet other family members, who were all super nice. We had hot pot together and went for nice walks. I enjoyed chatting with them and felt right at home. I wish I had more time in Seattle since it’s such a big city, but Jill kindly wrote down a list of places for me to visit, which I really appreciated.

Jill was knowledgeable and passionate about the Northern Coast they live on and the town (Wheeler) that they call home. she offered A recommendations on hiking, food, culture, and was generous enough to Invite me to different local known Institutions and events! I unfortunately had persistent trouble with my car but Jill offered support, understanding, and even driving when I needed it most. She hosted a gathering with the women of the town the day after I came and that was the start of Wheeler feeling like home; by the end of my stay I felt like I was part of the community. Edith was an absolute spitfire of a woman who will absolutely awe you with her Art and always offer you with vibrant conversation. These two are a Dynamic duo and I will never ever forget them or the time I had with them on the Oregon Coast. They have Impacted me in so many ways and it was a privilege I hope many more will have the pleasure of having. My World is brighter due to these women! Bee did a careful job weeding several overgrown areas in our yard, not letting cold and rainy weather deter her from completing the task. A hard worker, Bee was very responsive to our requests and got a lot done in an efficient manner. She was very respectful of our request for quiet evenings (we are early to bed), and was clean and tidy in her use of our home. She even taught us how to make delicious pierogi (great with jam and sour cream!) We only wish Bee could have stayed even longer.Comentarios

I flew into Oregon from Louisiana and thus, I did not have a car. Ms. Jill was happy to coordinate with me to drop me off and pick me up from different nearby locations. In addition to Ms. Jill’s help, there is an amazing bus route that I took once.

… read more Jill and Ms. Edith were incredibly flexible and allowed me to schedule my own time to work. I mainly worked in the mornings to have my afternoons free. I worked in their garden for all my working hours except once and I had an amazing time doing it!
I love hikes and walking so I was very happy to be joined by Ms. Jill as she showed me the beautiful scenery of Oregon’s coast. I also completed some peaceful hikes alone with Ms. Jill dropping me off at the trailhead.
Because I flew into Oregon, I was unable to bring all of my art supplies with me. Ms. Edith was happy to give me a few pieces of watercolor and drawing paper. Ms. Edith drew at her desk daily and it gave me the inspiration to draw more frequently than I have in the past few months.
My favorite part of my time with Ms. Jill and Ms. Edith were Fridays. On Fridays we would go to the smokehouse to get the most delicious salmon I’ve ever tasted along with a pastry. Then, we would drive over to the farmers market and get goodies for the week. It was like a little tradition and I loved it.
Spending time with Ms. Edith and Ms. Jill was a lovely experience. I gained so much new insight on doing things differently and sometimes better than I had previously done. On the one rainy day, she dusted everything in the house and polished all the wooden furniture, something we'd long neglected. In her down time, she drew, painted, read, and explored. She adjusted her daily schedule to match our early to bed habits, and was very respectful to our quiet lifestyle. … read more everyone. I flew to Seattle where I had the pleasure to meet the beautiful and lovely family of Jill. In the first days I had the most amazing food and even Jill’s daughter taught me how to prepare dumplings and noodles, which were to die for.
The main jobs around the house consisted of being in the garden weeding, making some arrangements in the house like organizing or cleaning and speaking Spanish, everything was so simple and I enjoyed a lot of weeding and having pleasant conversations with Jill and Edith in spanish. I also had other activities like spliting wood and because of that I learned to use a chainsaw with the right instructions and security measures and drive a little tractor. All the activities I did during the time I was in complete agreement and that is why I’m also grateful with Jill and Edith, they were checking if it was good for me and giving me a lot of options to do. But in general work it was so pleasant that it didn’t feel like it. The house is so comfortable and beautiful. For me it is the MOST beautiful house I have seen. I love each part of the house and enjoyed being in every spot and corner. They give you a great room and with the routine they have is like the perfect life, so bad that I couldn’t stay there forever.
Outside of work I felt like I had adopted a grandma and a mother from the United States. I loved to talk with them in Spanish or English. I didn’t feel like an outsider or only a worker, I felt like part of the family. They make me feel welcome and even invite me to some of the meetings around town to meet people. We also enjoyed great adventures together to see Portland, Seattle, the Columbia River Gorge and Vancouver. Personally speaking, travel for me is about making friends and enjoying time with them. They opened their lives to me and those weeks in there were something that I remember with such love, a little nostalgia as well (because it was so great). Maybe I will idolize them a lot in this review but it is completely the truth. I love these women and they stay in my heart that it was so hard to leave. She made Jill two pinatas for her birthday, so beautiful that we kept them as art instead of smashing them. The weather was often wet and cool, and Ana Paula was consistently positive and flexible about what activities to do, and even grew to enjoy spending time reading or journaling out in the cold. She is a skilled artist and gifted us with gorgeous watercolor paintings of flowers and birds. She is a dedicated astrologist and shared her knowledge by reading charts for us and several members of our family. Her good humor and zest for life were a delight to be around. We enjoyed several small trips together to see Seattle, Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, and Vancouver, Canada. Exploring the local beauty with Ana Paula was a lot of fun due to her positive energy and delight in seeing new things. Our family and friends enjoyed her company and continue to ask after her. Edith is extremely wise, and very energetic! She had so much wisdom to offer me, and she inspired me to be more creative and dig into my artistic pursuits with more passion.
Jill is calm in a crisis and extremely warm and personable. She genuinely cares about getting to know her work-awayers and made me feel consistently known and cared for.

After we walked through a lot of "chocolate pudding mud", Makena made delicious pudding out of tofu, peanut butter, and chocolate chips. A hard worker, they dusted everything in two houses, washed the floors in the entire house on hands and knees, cooked, cleaned and kept everything looking great. We enjoyed wonderful hikes where Makena showed me many kinds of Oregon fungi; they knows the names and a bit about each type of mushroom. We had many fascinating conversations, sharing our adventures growing up, and Makena knows a lot of fun facts from listening to science and history podcasts. Excellent company, I highly recommend Makena as a workaway guest for any household.

… read more she is a very pleasant companion, with great stories to share. Trisha brought (and shared) quite a bit of food and cooked delicious meals. Trisha's dog Pogo was delightful: well-behaved, friendly, gentle, quiet and a charming companion. We hadn't planned on having any workaway pets, and it turned out to be part of the fun. Trisha made the most of the area--taking in the sunset every evening from nearby beaches and enjoying local restaurants. She brought her own car and was independent with her activities outside the home. Even after she completed all of her hours, Trisha did a thorough and highly efficient cleaning of the entire house! Jill was away during Trisha's visit, and was amazed at what was accomplished in only a week with Trisha's help. We highly recommend Trisha as a workaway volunteer to any home.

I had a wonderful experience at this Workaway. Edith is a great communicator and quickly outlined the tasks that were important to complete. Keli spent over two months with us, beginning June 2021. She is a wonderful workaway volunteer. Keli was consistently respectful of our time and space. … read more cleaning. Keli listened carefully to what we wanted done, and was super hard-working. She is very self-motivated, and really cares about doing a great job. Our indoor and outdoor plants are much healthier and happier after her tender care. She misted or transplanted plants that had become dry, leggy or weak and they are now thriving. She persistently weeded all of our flower, berry, vegetable and plant beds, releasing them from weeds, and watering them every night during hot weather. We had more flowers and berries than ever before! Keli is very clean and careful inside the home, keeping her own room tidy and helping with cleaning the house. She washed all of our windows and window screens, leaving the house sparkling! I really appreciate that we never have to encourage Keli to work--she makes sure to complete tasks every day. She has many wonderful stories about her travel adventures, and is also happy quietly enjoying her own company. She became friends with Jill's daughter and was a positive influence. On top of all of the amazing work she did for us, Keli cooks delicious Chinese food. She learned to bake while she was here and enjoyed making bread, muffins and cookies. She was happy to help with food preparation for herself and for the family. Our whole family and our garden will miss Keli. We feel very lucky to have had the chance to spend the summer with her and have her help.

A typical day looked like weeding in the morning, going on an adventure in the afternoon, and helping make and clean up dinner in the evenings. Jill took us on countless hikes and sight-seeing trips along the coast, and encouraged us to go on our own adventures as well. When we visited their family in Seattle, we took a few days on our own to explore the Olympic Peninsula! It was amazing! We slept in a comfortable and homey bedroom on the second floor of their house. It had plenty of space, two beds, a desk, and a TV. Both Jill and Edith were so hospitable and welcoming.
