Life on our Yukon acreage farm is rich with forest, mountain views and meaningful DIY homestead, northerning living prep work. We are entering our third season at our rural home, and we are learning the ins and outs of our homestead project. There are beautiful forests to roam, a hand-built log cabin, friendly livestock guardian dogs, gardens, berry bushes, a hobby pottery studio, and a wood shop that keep days creative and full.

We are a family of four. Two adults, one of which grew up in the Yukon and two kids (7&10yr). We have four dogs, three are outdoor living and one couch potato indoor dog. Our rural and rustic acreage has two tractors to maintain the hay field, horse barn (with no horses) and fenced in pastures.
We have a old log cabin on the property that we hope to spruce up a bit and lots of space to enjoy a Yukon summer.

I’m a stay-at-home farm tender, parent and ceramic artist, so I’m very present on the property. I love sharing my passion whether that’s gardening skills, ceramic pottery techniques, foraging basics or making sourdough bread. As someone who grew up in the Yukon, Im passionate about sharing cool things to do in the Yukon area while visiting. I’m also happy to point you toward the best local lakes, swimming spots, and hiking/biking trails. There are cultural events in our area that hosted at the local community center that we often attend as family in the Summer such as Canada Day celebrations. Workaway guests are welcome to join us when we take in the local culture events.

Having a vehicle would be an asset to working in a rural area in the Yukon.

Workawayers will be living around my family and me on our acreage. There’s plenty of space to enjoy quiet time, nature, and personal downtime, but if you’re feeling social, we’re friendly, relaxed people who enjoy company. Shared meals, barbecues, outdoor pizza nights, and relaxed evenings together are a natural part of life here. Its a great way to practice English and my kids attend French immersion. If you’re into mountain biking or hiking, there are all kinds of local trails accessible from our property into the forest and mountains nearby.

Whitehorse is a tourist destination which hosts gold rush museums, traditional indigenous artwork galleries, summer markets and beautiful scenery.

We aim to create a balance where you can feel both independent and truly part of the team welcomed, respected, and at home.

In the summer season, help on our farmstead is varied, depends on the weather and ongoing maintance projects.

Tasks may include: wood hauling, splitting, and stacking wood; organizing and tidying our storage spaces; and feeding/ walking our family dogs. There is a job board with suggestions and ideas of general house owner maintenance that do not require professional trades skills. We would not want to take away work that would require locally skilled tradespeople with volunteer hours. The workstay would be help in everyday maintenance of rural, rural family home, yard and sometimes child care/supervision. Our homestead is not operating as a business and are garden spaces is for personal enjoyment and feeding our family. We are flexible if you want to work in the am or pm, and daily chores often depend on our Yukon summer weather a little too!

We are early risers and love to be outside on our property puttering around under the sunshine with our kids and dogs. We enjoy hosting friends and family for bbq's and enjoy boating on near by lakes.

You’ll be staying in a cozy, clean travel trailer that is parked on the property and hooked up to electricity. The clean trailer includes a refrigerator, and fresh water for drinking. It’s a simple, comfortable setup with the basics you need while enjoying a rural, Yukon forest environment. There is a queen-size bed and linens provided. There is a shared washroom, shower and laundry in the main house that is available for use.

Food is shared and communal. Breakfast is self-serving such as cereal, fruit and bread, toast, eggs, available. We typically provide the main meals and eat together when schedules line up, with a focus on simple, nourishing, home-style food. Some produce comes from our garden when available. We love to have pizza night with our pizza oven and often BBQ in the summer.

Workaways may be asked to help occasionally with meal prep, cleanup, or their own breakfasts/lunches, depending on the day. We’re happy to discuss dietary needs or preferences ahead of time and do our best to accommodate when possible, but flexibility is appreciated.

The local community center is up the hwy 10 mins and offers community programs such as Yoga on monday nights and cultural programs.

There isn't much available for transport in the rural area. Whitehorse, the capital city is approx. 25mins drive. Our family often goes into town and helpers are welcome to catch a ride if space. Carcross is small village close by and is tourist destination to explore while in the area. Robinson road house is an historic area up the road as well as Skagway, Alaska which is 2hr drive away.

We are located 25mins from the airport and taxis do come out to our area.

There are few places to park on the acreage. Access would be dirt roads but nothing that would require off roading 4X4 vehicles. There is places to fill water jugs and possible to hook up to power if needed, closer to the main buildings. Leave no trace style camping is what we would require for any camping guests.

    Profile photo of Gideon

    Gideon (11 años)

Gideon – Our Senior House Dog

Gideon is our senior Papillon and the gentle heart of the household. Unlike Bruce and Charlie, he is a true house dog and companion animal. He is small, affectionate, and loves quiet company indoors after a day of outdoor work.

Gideon brings balance to the pack dynamic and adds warmth and gentleness to the home environment. He enjoys calm attention and is happiest curled up nearby while we relax in the evenings.

Together, Bruce, Charlie, and Gideon reflect the full rhythm of life here — working dogs who protect the land and a senior companion dog who brings comfort and calm to the home. Workawayers who enjoy animals will find the dogs to be a meaningful and memorable part of their experience on the farm.

    Charlie

Charlie – Our Outdoor Guardian Buddy

Charlie is our Great Pyrenees mix and lives primarily outdoors as part of the guardian team. He works closely with Bruce and acts as his backup buddy, helping monitor the property and respond to wildlife activity.

Charlie has a steady, grounded presence and is well-suited to outdoor farm life. He is friendly with people who are part of the household and, like Bruce, takes time to assess new arrivals before fully relaxing. Watching Bruce and Charlie work together gives Workawayers a fascinating insight into how livestock guardian dogs cooperate and communicate in a real-world setting.

Learning to move calmly and confidently around both dogs is part of daily life here, and we will guide you in understanding their behavior and routines.

    Bruce

Bruce – Our Lead Farm Dog

Bruce is our 4-year-old Maremmano / Great Pyrenees cross and the heart of the farm. He is a large, confident livestock guardian dog who takes his role seriously and helps keep the property safe.

Bruce is calm, intelligent, and deeply bonded to our home and routine. He is gentle and affectionate with people who are part of the household, and once he knows you, he becomes a loyal companion who enjoys being near while you work outdoors. At the same time, he is a true working dog, always alert to wildlife and changes in his environment.

Because of his size and guardian instincts, Bruce needs people around him to be calm, grounded, and respectful. We will show you how to interact with him properly, read his body language, and move confidently around the property. Learning to live alongside a livestock guardian dog is an important part of the homestead experience here.

Spending time with Bruce gives Workawayers a rare opportunity to understand how working guardian dogs think and operate in a real farm setting. He is not a typical pet — he is a partner in protecting the land — and for those interested in rural life and animal behavior, this is a unique and rewarding experience.

Bruce is a valued member of our farm family, and we expect him to be treated with kindness, respect, and consistency at all times.
