Descripción
We are searching for talented individuals who are great photographers; and want to work with a NGO (non-profit foundation) and our social development enterprises. Our ideal workawayer will help us enhance our communication of our work within the community of Santa Cruz La Laguna, Lake Atitlan. Our NGO is coming up on our 25th year anniversary, and much of our work is in anticipation of this milestone. The project would be in June/July 2023.
You would be working with our young, professional, and energetic staff. Our Executive Director is from the USA, our Commuications director is from Guatemala City, and the balance of our staff are Cachiquel Mayan.
Please visit our current website, Facebook profile, and our YouTube channel. This will give you a complete picture of our mission, where we are in our marketing and social media.

Very specific short term goals for our next volunteer will be able to help improve our photos and videos documenting our programs and our community. Spanish language desired

We will provide you a nice comfortable private room, shared bath, and shared kitchen in a local homestay. We will include one meal per day.

Our location and where you will be living and playing during your spare time:
This is a base camp for exploring Lake Atitlan Guatemala. Choose from different activities such as hiking the mountains surrounding the lake, kayak excursions or go on private tours by boat. You can find adventures that suits your interest and your own level of activity.

We are happy to help you have an amazing experience. We give you the opportunity to have experiences that will let you learn about the Mayan culture and meet many of the locals . The Mayan people are very proud of their cultural past and they enjoy sharing their efforts to keep it alive and strong today. They would love to interact with you. One of the reason we started this is as a way of creating jobs for locals and supporting our non-profit. One of the big challenges of life in Guatemala is to improve the lives of the local people. The non profit is focused on improving the education and nutrition of the Mayan.

My time with Lee and Elaine was absolutely wonderful. There simply won't be enough space to write about it all!

Two weeks turned into 2+ months in the blink of an eye. This was my first WorkAway gig and it was an extraordinary and multi-faceted experience. From the start, Lee was quick to communicate with me before my arrival and explained their… read more needs as hosts. He is always on the move and very passionate about his work. I came to Santa Cruz to work on their Kayak Guatemala website to help streamline the site a bit more and assist in a greater marketing reach for their awesome adventure tours/services. Lee and Elaine have created an incredible business according to their own individual strengths (a business that always aims to support local enterprises/people and educate about Guatemalan/Maya culture) and have developed a beautiful property with an on-site spa (run by Elaine).

My original marketing tasks turned into so much more - I joined in on their guided tours and assisted with customer service and guest relations, worked as a translator when necessary, collaborated on the development of a new tour at a permaculture collective on the lake, assisted in their Kayak/SUP rentals, helped run their rental properties, supported the local NGO with professional development workshops and later creating a community tourism website, partnered on sexual education workshops for youth, took care of their absolutely adorable pack of pups and cats and beyond! I quickly felt like a part of the Santa Cruz community. Lee and Elaine welcomed me like family and trusted me to work independently and professionally. You definitely need to be self-sufficient, flexible person with strong communication skills. They stay busy but allowed me to find my groove and work on tasks that peaked my interests. Towards the end, they let me offer greater support to the NGO initiatives and I am very thankful for their adaptability. I learned immensely from my experience with them and will be back, no doubt.

As hosts, Lee and Elaine were beyond gracious. Their property is an oasis in Santa Cruz (aka the best little town on Lake Atitlan) and they offered Elaine's "Birdhouse" retreat for me (private kitchen, bathroom and cozy second-floor room with balcony). In every sense of the word, their home was my home. They treated me to home-cooked meals every so often, kept their eye on my when I was sick, were kind enough to help me out with groceries a few times and also were sweet enough to grab special non-gluten items for me. I typically cooked for myself, so these were just added perks of their thoughtfulness. They have three perfect dogs and two lovely cats. I miss my furry friend crew so much!

This unique WorkAway experience offers you the capacity to work as a team member alongside Lee and Elaine and match your talents to their various work opportunities (online marketing, tourism, cultural experiences, non-profit work, adventure sports, etc.). I recommend them highly.

Lee and Elaine are very knowledgeable about the culture and history of Guatemala and especially of the Lake Atitlan area - they definitely can take you beyond the typical touristy venues! They have lots of great stories - be sure to ask Lee about the one where his kayak mysteriously disappeared. :) And also - if Lee recommends a restaurant or place in town - it's pretty much guaranteed to be good.

The work hours vary - sometimes we would be out filming and doing pretty strenuous physical activities for the shoots 3 days in a row, all day, and then we would have 3 - 5 days of editing.
Or sometimes, we would quick jump in the car to go film a certain scene, have lunch, and be back within a few hours. It really depends.

Lee and Elaine's property, Los Elementos, is just gorgeous. I highly recommend getting up at sunrise and going to have a coffee down by the lake, which I did nearly every morning. And of course, the lake and volcano views are just stunning.

To get into town, you have to take a boat (which is about 20 minutes, more or less). Lee and Elaine have a dock outside their property, but the boats don't really come to it, so you will have to walk to the Santa Cruz dock (about 10 minutes) most of the time.
In town, you can get groceries and other necessities. We were a bit surprised at the prices of things in the supermarket - it isn't the cheapest place, though not the most expensive either.
If you want to avoid going all the way into town for food, you can go to the Isla Verde (next door neighbor hotel-cafe), where everything is absolutely beautiful and delicious but also pretty expensive (lattes, for example, are over $4 USD). You can also go have a snack at the Iguana Perdida, a super cool hostel about a 10 minute walk away.

Lee and Elaine did not provide food for us, though sometimes they would make some awesome meals for everyone to share. We worked this out in advance, but that arrangement may differ for other Workawayers.

About internet - if you are just planning to use it to check email and Facebook and such, it will be fine. But just be aware that it can be slow. If you plan to stream movies and TV shows online - well, maybe don't. A tip, though, the internet speed is faster late at night.
For us, we both work online, so having fast internet was essential. We had to make a deal with someone in town to pay 500 quetzales ($67 USD) for 1 month of internet, going twice a week for a few hours. The internet there was extremely fast, but we did have to take our laptops and work on the boats into town twice a week.

This was a great experience, and our first Workaway. We really came to love Guatemala and Lake Atitlan. If you are an amateur filmmaker / video editor, this is a great opportunity.
