We were so lucky to host Astrid & Rylan. Because of them we were able to finally complete some projects that had been on our list for years! They saw the daily things that needed doing and got right on them. No oversight needed. They were so much fun to work with and made the day fly by. Worked great by themselves or with the crew. We LOVE the Porterfields. This was our first summer in Alaska and our second Workaway host of the summer and it was such an amazing breath of fresh air. The community of Trapper Creek will leave you with a desire to never leave, and when you do it will certainly be a tearful good-bye!

We found friendship, community, music, love, and hardwork staying in Trapper Creek. We plan to come back again next year as we feel we have truly found a home with the Porterfields. We cannot wait to see what adventure and new (and old) faces we get to experience when we do!Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

If you’re a fan of beer and getting your hands dirty, you’ll find a good time in Trapper Creek.
Pulling onto Petersville Road, we rolled our windows down and followed the music to the Pig Shed, a community watering hole we would come to cherish.
Our days filled up with tending the gardens, peeling and chopping logs, cleaning and organizing, and
… read more generally lending a hand wherever needed. In the evenings, we cooked hearty meals with fresh vegetables and stayed up through the few dark hours with the Porterfield family and Trapper Creek locals.
This was our first Workaway, and we fear it spoiled us for any others. There was always work to be done and an adventure to be found and the Porterfields made it easy to do both in one day. We learned how to make the most of Alaska’s short growing season, where the best berries hide, and heard plenty of good stories and dirty jokes. We were sad to wash the hard-earned mud out of our pup's fur—but not nearly as sad as she was.
We saw the Northern Lights, started a sourdough, jammed with the local band, viewed the mountains from a bush plane, fished for salmon, and (maybe) invented bear po boys. In short, we could not have dreamed of a better Alaskan adventure or better folks to share it with.
Levi, Megan, Janel, Tyler, Doug, Darrell—and everyone else who made our stay so memorable—we can not thank you enough for your lessons, laughter, and hospitality!! We will be back!Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

Sam came during transplanting. He was the first workaway of the season. Not many people were here. He had a lot of repetitive work he did with a smile on his face. We loved having Oli! He showed up to meet us on a long hike out from the cabin. He was happy to slosh through mud and brush and to help us get the 4-wheelers unstuck. He hauled rocks and debris. He helped prep meals and cook for the crew. Oli is great at working by himself and with others. He has no problems with hard work. He is also a lot of fun

I cannot say enough good things about this family. This was my third Workaway and the best by far. They really just want to take care of you and help you enjoy your experience in Alaska.
The Basics - This is a family (no small kids except the occasional grandkid visitor) with several properties all within a mile. They have two large gardens, a
… read more few farm animals raised for food (pigs, chickens, ducks), a hostel in progress, a small pool hall, and an outdoor stage where live music plays every weekend when the weather is nice. The hostel (not yet open) has a bouldering wall and the family happily loaned me camping equipment to go off on a camping trip for a week with some of the other volunteers.
The Accommodations - I stayed for ~2 months in a basic but cozy 3 bedroom apartment with two other volunteers (no shared rooms!). The apartment had wifi that’s a little laggy for video conferences but works fine for streaming and internet browsing. There are other options for housing (the hostel looked like so much fun!!) but this was the one I chose. The area is rural and there are huge open fields with big beautiful trees everywhere, and a large river nearby.
The Work - Very laid back and at your own pace. The hosts are always working alongside you and let you work on whatever project you want. My work included construction to rebuild the bunkhouse, harvesting veggies and farm animals raised for food, cooking, and other projects. There was pretty much something new to do every day which I love. You can work whenever you want (I typically started around 1/2pm and worked on projects until it was time to get dinner going) and take your days off whenever you’d like.
The Food - Oh my god, the food. If you like to cook, you’ll do just fine here. All meals (or the food to prepare your own meals) were provided. We just had one gut-busting meal after another. We typically did our own thing for breakfast and lunch; breakfast was whatever we requested from the store (within reason of course), we could help ourselves to whatever leftovers were in the fridge for lunch, and we prepared food together every night for dinner ~7pm.
The Location - They picked me up from the airport in Anchorage (2 hrs away), which for me is the first sign of a great host. You’ll be 2 hrs south of Denali and 1.5 hrs away from Hatcher Pass (great for both hiking and climbing!). I was allowed to use a vehicle whenever I wanted, but I tried not to very often because the vehicles are older “rigs” more suited to short drives between the properties (that being said, I was able to take them up mountain roads to get some epic hikes in!). There are a couple of small (pricey) convenience stores within walking distance but you’re better off picking up anything you might need (e.g. toiletries) on your way up from Anchorage.
TLDR: If you’re traveling to meet new and interesting people, come here. The family is eccentric, knowledgeable, and seriously the nicest people you’ll ever meet. You’ll be in a great area to explore Denali (although I recommend Hatcher Pass instead) and other incredible wilderness areas.Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

What a great experience - everyone in Trapper Creek welcomed me like family. I felt immediately at home and spent the summer learning a ton: about growing vegetables, raising ducks pigs and chickens, and life in Alaska. (Alaskans know how to do everything. And they have the best stories!)

My month and a half experience at this homestead in Trapper Creek was beyond words. Never, in all my three+ years of experience with work exchanges, have I ever been so well taken care of, had so much fun, engaged in countless memorable and enriching conversations, met such unique and kind individuals, and really the list could go on and on.
The
… read more work (if you call it that) is fun, laid-back, tailored to your abilities and interests, and very very appreciated by everyone. I spent a lot of time cooking, transplanting, planting Levi’s picture-perfect garden (or farm, as John insists based on the size of it), watering, creating flower and veggie pots, organizing parties, riding on tractors, doing grocery runs, etc. I also had plenty of time to myself, had superb housing in a private apartment, and even was allowed to use the car at times to go explore the beautiful terrains of Alaska. I enjoyed speedy motorcycle rides, holding baby ducks, eating wild game (moose ribs!), drinking lots of beer, shooting guns, and spending quality time with super cool people with super cool stories.
You are treated so very well here and welcomed with open arms by the whole family, as well as the whole community! There are music nights at the stage Levi built by hand every Saturday night at “the pig shed” where they hold their yearly pig roasts, as well as any excuse to have a celebration and/or group dinner party.
The whole family has such a wide and varying range of skills and knowledge - from computer skills, to building, gardening, foraging, Alaskan history & artifacts (they have two incredible, private museums!), van & bus conversions, auto repair, homesteading, animals, hunting, etc etc etc.
I really feel like I could go on and on. But the basic message here is that if you come here to Janelle’s homestead, you’ll eat hard, drink hard, work hard (ish?), & play hard, all the while surrounded by loving, unique, and knowledge individuals living an authentic Alaskan lifestyle.
THANK YOU Janelle, Tyler, Doug, Megan, Levi, John, Brother Ben...thank you everyone (the list goes on) who helped make this such a memorable experience. Forever grateful and looking forward to visiting again!!!!!!
