I spent 6 wonderful weeks in spring at the farm in Virden. Colleen really made me feel like a family member from the moment I arrived. She is a very friendly and talkative person who doesn’t hesitate to answer you any question you have about everything. She taught me a lot about horses in every respect. They have horses in different stages of
… read more training so I was given the opportunity to see the work with yearlings but also ride a mature and a young horse. I started riding Shanelle, a calm and well trained mare to enhance my riding skills. Colleen would never put you on a horse she doesn’t know good enough or you don’t feel confident to ride.
As I spent the Spring there and the summer holiday hadn’t started, I was alone in the morning till noon at the farm. Colleen wrote me a list every morning with all the things I needed to do. Mainly I cleaned boxstalls and did chores, but I did also some light housework, painting and mowing. Once she got home we tacked up and rode outdoor, indoor, down the road or in town. One time we did a trail ride too, which was beautiful. I improved my riding skills a lot due to Colleens patience and corrections. I rode most of the times Western but also English and bareback. In the last two weeks Colleen even gave me a three year old to work with, the cute Porsha.
Every weekend we went showing, every week somewhere else. I met a lot of nice people there and learned how to take part in horse shows like that. They train horses and haul them to prepare them for their futurities, very competitive shows. We usually took off Friday, slept in the horse trailer and showed Saturday. Colleen even let me show Shanelle too! So I could take part in these ‘tournaments’ and I even won some money and ribbons and had a lot of fun too!
Besides the horse skills I developed, I learned a lot about Canada itself and kind of experienced the rural lifestyle there which is so completely different from where I come from. Also Colleen took me a few times to the high school she teaches at and explained me the Canadian school system. The teachers and pretty much everybody I met during my stay was so kind to me, so I never felt out of place.
The beautiful farm is surrounded with endless pasture. They have an indoor and an outdoor arena (prepared for every weather and horse), a round pen and a barn, different paddocks and pastures.
The next town, Virden where you can get everything you need is a 10min drive, Brandon the way bigger city is 40 min away. As they have two trucks and a car, I could take the car and drive by myself to the city or town when I wanted to.
It was an unforgettable experience for me and I miss everything about it. Beginning with Porsha, Shanelle then Jorjia and Parker, the cutest dogs in the world, and pretty much everything else.
So thank you again for making my stay so special.Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.
