Hello, my name is Chris. We are a Swiss-Malaysian family and operate a small restaurant and had been running a charter business with a small fleet of boats here in Langkawi.

While we stopped this charter business, we are still in good contact with one of the boats that worked with us. This boat is quite unique as it is a traditional Malay wooden junk schooner of almost 100 feet and the only one of her kind for charter in Malaysia. The builder/owner/skipper of this boat had a very similar boat built in the 80ies and sailed it round the world. This Malaysian boat is built in an archaic technique with wooden dowels and caulking bark. The art of building these boats is rapidly dying out and very few masters are still alive and practise this skill in Kuala Terengganu on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Now, June 2021, the boat is sitting on its mooring in Kuah the main town of Langkawi, near the ferry terminal. The country is still in lock down mode to fight the Corona pandemic. The borders are closed and cross border travel is not possible.

When the boat was still chartering, the skipper was always looking forward to share his knowledge with one or two helpers and teach them how to run and maintain a classic wooden boat in return for their help. No sailing skills were required but a will to help and an ability and a liking for manual tasks. Carpenters, mechanics and electricians or other trained craftsmen are always welcome. The skipper will be delighted having you.

Since there is not much charter work due to the lockdown - not many tourists come to Langkawi - there is not a lot of sailing. But the owner lives on board and does some maintaining jobs. Maybe there will be some charter sailing as well - but on a low profile.

This is an opportunity to live on board a unique wooden sailing boat, learn a few things about wooden boats, lay back, relax, put in a bit of work and wait until the Corona storm has passed.

    This might be for you!

    Check it out!

You will meet people of all walks of life, on the island you can still find old kampongs (villages) where the Malays live as in the times before tourists arrived. You can practise your skills in Malay language and explore a virgin rain forest.

Babysit a classic wooden boat, keep it clean, keep it ventilated, maybe do little maintenance works, close the boat up during a rain, open up after the rain, be on board after dark, switch on the anchor light for the night, switch it off during the day. Monitor the bilges and pump if necessary.

Langkawi is a well known holiday destination in Malaysia, an archipelago of 99 islands at the edge of the Andaman Sea, 60 SM north of Penang. A substantial part of the island is covered with virgin rainforest, good for jungle trekking and bird watching: eagles and hornbills are abundant. Water sport (except for diving or snorkelling - no visibility), kayaking, bike riding. You can explore the island with a rented motorbike or just relax in a tropical environment. Quite frequently we see groups of dolphins, even in harbour.
