Description
David (Designer), Cameo (Interior Architect) & Fuji (daily walks needed) live here in the West of Ireland overlooking Lough Feagh & Clew Bay on 31 acres of mixed woodland/reforestation & pasture land amongst the Wild Nephin Valley nestled in the mountains.
Ideally Couples or friends happy to share a space. 4 weeks minimum stay. To make it worthwhile for us both to acheive something. Our accommodation is best suited to two friends sharing or couples.
Plant based diet. We try to buy local Organic veg from a neighbour's smallholding & grow our own too. We provide all your food throughout your stay. Mostly you will eat independently in the evenings using your own facilities provided. We eat lunch together on work days.
We have a camper with mini log burner that you can be occupied. We have ample space to park up with stunning views & access to compost loo/gas shower for other vanlife nomads.
Later down the line we will have a guest cabin. Please note it can be very hard work some days as working with stone is tough work. It depends what needs doing that week.
We are a young family (both 38) and are hoping to grow the roster in the coming years so will need some help to finish the build of our home nestled in between Croagh Patrick Mountain & Wild Nephin National Park which there is a view of both from the property.
The house is a traditional cottage made from local Red Sandstone and we have restored using ancient techniques, passive principles and bio-based materials keeping refuse to a minimum where options are limited. We may use minimal carbon intensive materials like cement for exterior works such as paving or stone walls to hang heavy gates but none in the house.
The house will be off-grid using Wind & Solar for electricity, coppice wood and compost/geo-thermal for heating & hot water. There is lots to learn on this one. We have plans to build a 5 acre Agroforestry food forest, large Permaculture veg patch, green house, spa & guest cabins.
When the house is complete we can pursue our other interests & ambitions for the smallholding. We are interested in climate stabalising solutions through respecting and evolving natural systems. Carbon positive agroforestry, Composting, permanant tree crops, encouraging vital species habitat, copicing & soil development.
Im also interested in off-grid utilities using renewable energy. Solar, wind, hydro, compost & geothermal heating, spring water, coppicing and planting.
Promote biodiversity and design resourceful plans for excessive water on the land through careful tree planting design based on porous root systems of certain trees and nitrogen fixing species amongst an edible landscape.
15 acres is pure reforestation so has been left to wild since we came in 2022, we suspect it fits into the category of Temperate Rainforest but are yet to get this officially confirmed. Excellent for foraging wild foods & mushrooms. This site also has a suspected Neolithic settlement & is shrouded in folklore & the wonderful Irish mythology. There are no end of tales you will hear from locals. The neighbourhood is very friendly and welcoming to all. Volunteers freely hitchhiking to town and back.
Our local beaches are known for some of the best surf breaks in europe. There is sailing, kayaking & wild swimming to be enjoyed all over the county.
We have a large camper van with double bed, log burner, kitchen, fan, solar panels and multiple USB ports for a couple or individual volunteer. 700w of solar on the roof and a 2000w inverter so charging laptops or other devices is not an issue.
Multiple camper vans are welcome all year with 24 hour access to compost loo/solar shower. If you are a digital nomad who cannot commit to 5 hours a day Mon-Fri we may be able to work something out if you can survive independently with lunch provided on workdays.Types d'aide et opportunités d'apprendre

The folklore of Ireland is vast and deeply ingrained. The mystical history will engage any guests here whilst learning many traditional sustainable building techniques. Cameo has worked with wood for many years and is a keen spoon carver.
With the emphasis on passive & off-grid there is no end of problem solving and design sulutions that will engage any hungry mind. I have some experience with renewable energy from my degree in Design.
With multiple volunteers there will be oppurtunities to meet other travellers and develop need friendships and expand your network.Aide
We have some experience with developing property & renewable energy. Cameo is a decent amateur carpenter and im confident with plumbing & electrics.
Earthen floor in the house. Mixing, maneuvering buckets, plaster/trowel work for finish.
Woodworking to re-build the decking, sauna, etc.
Building greenhouse from scrap double-glazed windows.
Beginning an Agrofrestry food forest of around 5 acres.
Build & maintain veg patch.
Plenty to do so please come and help us and enjoy wonderful mystical scenery, Irish warmth & a good old cup a tea!
The climate, landscape is tough, wet & very windy. You will need to be hardy, dressed appropriately and ready for Atlantic wilderness. Head torch, boots, raincoat, waterproof overalls, travel towel, crocs are also very handy when not working.
YOU MUST DECLARE ANY INJURIES OR MEDICATION PRIOR TO ARRIVAL SO WE ARE AWARE.Langues

English is our mother tongue. I speak a little Spanish and want to further my learning of Italian. Cameo spoke basic Swahili many years back and also wants to further her Italian. We have a small project in Northern Tuscany which we will return to in 2025 and will also require volunteers one day. This is why we want to learn Italian above all other languages now.Hébergement
Ideally we want camper van folk ONLY until we build guest cabins or bunkhouse.
However...
We have a large camper van with double bed, log burner, kitchen, fan, solar panel and multiple USB ports for a couple, individual volunteer or 2 friends content to share.
Multiple camper vans are welcome all year with 24 hour access to compost loo/solar shower.
Its very remote so ideally you would want a vehicle. You can borrow bicycles. 30mins cycle into Newport. Many volunteers successfully and joyfully hitchhike from our small pocket of neighbours into town. Same to return or taxi.
Plant based. We encourage volunteers to cook and share your culture for food.
Mountain spring drinking water.
Running/swimming some morning. If your interested.
We intend to have more volunteers when possible like in summer or we welcome camper vans with plenty of scenic spots to park up.Autres infos...

We are overlooking many lakes, the archipelago & many mountains. We are nestled in between the famous Crough Patrick Mountain & Wild Nephin National Park. You can see both from the house! There is no end of stunning wilderness to play in.
We have many Blue Flag beaches here in Mayo and the longest coastline of all the counties. There are also Blue Flag beaches. Our local beach Mulranny has great surf and is one of these prestigious Blue Flag beaches. We will surf regularly once our house is complete. You are welcome to join. 3mm suit for summer is OK otherwise its 5mm winter suit, hood & boots.
I have volunteered in South America, Africa and Europe on similar projects. Cam also lived in Tanzania and has volunteered with multiple architecture charities. We both volunteered in Calais in 2016 to rebuild the camps for refugees.Informations complémentaires
