Leoni & Manni were a great couple. Super helpful, great communication, hard workers. Manni did alot of work with Ross helping him on a building project. We had a wonderfull last workaway experience on our Australian adventure with Ross, Ruby and lovely Harriet. Though there is a lot to do around the property and everyone is also super busy in their everyday life, Ross and Ruby are very easy going and made us feel heartly welcome from the very first moment, invited us to join their dinners in the
… read more evenings and cooked really delicious vegetarian dinner.
Talking with Ross about gardening and his visions for the property was really delightful. With his incredibly patient personality he also took care that we had a good variety of different tasks that fitted our individual interests the most, so we both never got bored nor exhausted and still had enough energy and time to get our car fixed in the afternoons :) During our stay we helped with weeding, planting, setting up new garden beds, whipper snippering and taking care for little Harriet every once in a while.
We stayed in the cozy cottage next to the main house with an extremely comfortable bed, a beautifull view into the hills and a wood stove (which became employee of the week due to a couple of cold nights😊)

Our own little house, equipped with a TV screen, streaming access, and Wi-Fi, was the perfect retreat. We greatly appreciated the independence and comfort it provided.

This first Workaway experience was particularly special for us in many ways. We are very grateful to Ross and Ruby for their incredible hospitality and generosity.

I wish I could have given more when helping on the project but Ross was patient in showing me new skills. Work days were typically morning until afternoon and then myself and another work away volunteer were free to explore the area, often borrowing Ross and Rubys car that they kindly lent to us. At the end of the stay we were taken for an overnight trip, staying in a patch of the national park near the Grampian mountains. This was an unforgettable experience, seeing wild kangaroos and emus out in the bush and was arguably the highlight of my time in oz.

We learned a ton from them, but they also asked a lot of questions and were genuinely interested in learning about us and our culture. It was lovely to compare our different cultures and talk about life in general. Besides they both are really good in cooking. Ruby and Ross are the best hosts you can possibly imagine. They own a beautiful piece of land in central-Victoria, approx 20min from Castlemaine which is about 2hours away from The Southercross Station in Melbourne (17$ one-way train fare)

… read more character and is very comfortable : You’ll have your own private double bedroom, shared bathroom and free access to the kitchen. You'll instantly feel at home and share good times around the most beautiful kitchen island ;)
From weeding, gutters cleaning, to wood working, ladder building, plums jamming or bungalow fixing the work is varied and you will for sure, learn a lot.
Ross is a brilliant landscape designer and builder, Ruby is an amazing cook and very good card player ;) They are both very cheerful, always ready to share a good story and laugh.
Time has passed so fast, I wished I could have stayed longer.

I had my own room, with a two person bed, which was great after sleeping in hostels for two months. Apart from that they’re both really good cooks, so if you like good (vegetarian) food I can recommend their place even more. The area they live in is really quiet with just a couple of other houses around. It’s still pretty close to other towns. Since I wasn’t able to drive a car myself they would drive me to town whenever I wanted and pick me up as well.
The work I had to do was different every day, which made it a lot more fun! I helped Ross with some of the furniture that he was building (he makes some really beautiful stuff), I did some gardening, did some cleaning, etc. Actually most of the time Ross would ask me what I felt like doing and I could pick my own ‘task’.
