Hello - we are Joe and Yi! We are an engaged couple from Pennsylvania USA. We have a diverse range of skills and travel experience. Joe is an organic vegetable farmer and Yi is a digital marketing project manager. We are currently building out our own organic vegetable farm on our land.

Before diving into our careers, we spent all of 2019 “workawaying” our way through Taiwan, Laos, Japan, Korea, and New Zealand. We loved the genuine experiences, connections, and lessons we earned on our journey. For us, workaway provides us with the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the culture of the country we are traveling in and to make real relationships and memories with locals and other travelers. Being able to provide value and help to the people we meet and learn from adds a depth to traveling that we love.

We are planning to visit Latin America this December 2023 and would love to be able to help you and learn from you.

We are hardworking, kind, and curious people! We both speak English as a first language, Yi also speaks Mandarin fluently, and Joe speaks Spanish and Lao at a conversational level.

JOE:
I was born and raised in Northern New Jersey in the US. I value family, friends(new and old!), and new experiences. I am outgoing, passionate and I love to laugh, and have a good meal and cold beer after a hard days work!

Work Experience: Farm work, construction work, community development work in Lao, Entrepreneur, social impact work
Interests: Homesteading and growing my own food/livestock, conscientious and simple living, spending time with nature, working with my hands, leaving the world better off than when I got here

YI:
I was born in China and moved to California when I was 11 years old. I am quiet and introverted and I like to speak through my actions. I am reliable, hardworking, curious and compassionate. I am a fast-learner and an excellent listener. I am also a very clean and tidy person!

Yi and I(Joe) stayed at Hiro and Mickey's peaceful home for 3 weeks in June. We enjoyed our time in the beautiful mountains of Kagawa so much. It was great to be a part of something bigger than ourselves for those 3 weeks, helping to move forward Hiro's vision of creating a community of abundance and life to revitalize the recently abandoned… read more valley communities of the surrounding mountains.(Japan is experiencing an exodus from the countryside to urban areas and Hiro is trying to reclaim these lost lands with his 30-year project)

The work was challenging and fulfilling, 5 hours a day - with a 30min break - 5 days a week. You get to make your own schedule and choose your days off. We did a lot of land clearing and pioneer farmwork, as the profile explains. We got to try many new things we had not yet done before and learned new skills along the way. If you enjoy hard work it is great. Hiro provides a goal and will give you freedom and space to figure out tasks in your own way - do not expect a ton of initial guidance but do not be afraid to ask for help! Hiro is also understanding of each person's capabilities and will never pressure anyone to do something they do not choose to.

We had our own private traditional tatami room which was comfortable and simple - everything we needed and a great view of the mountains. The internet was very fast and worked great all over the house. There is always rice in the rice cookers and the fridge is always full of food for everyone in the house. You are on your own for meals but Hiro makes it clear that we all share the home together and to take whatever we may want or need. It took some time to get used to being so independent in someone else's home, but we really enjoyed the structure of this workaway. Hiro does not view his home as "his" but instead a place where his family is staying and sharing with other families, people, and animals. You will not be treated as a special guest here but instead as another member of a very unique and special community with a meaningful mission.

We 100% recommend staying here to enjoy living in the Japanese mountains, get to know Hiro and his family, be a part of his vision, and enjoy fulfilling work and a simple/peaceful lifestyle.

Thank you Hiro, Mickey, Saka, and Aka for everything you shared with us and taught us! We hope to visit again in the future. Stay bold and continue to do what you believe in!
